OT Tall Bearded Iris are putting up Bloom Spikes

I went out today and where I had had only 3 or 4 spikes, the numbers at least tripled or quadrupled overnight. Maybe the rain affected them. Some of the new ones planted in the fall are ready to show out, in fact, every bed has some bloom beginning. Of course, it is supposed to have frost tonight, so I will cover the peonies and the bloom spikes that are opening, and hope for the best. I may set a fan to blow over the azaleas.

Today DH and I are going back to the nursery where we got such good prices and we will bring home some more goodies.

Are you hoping to buy more Azealas? You are doing such a great job with that Azeala grouping you are planting now.

I hope you don't get the frost and your blooms are not harmed. It seems early to me for TB iris stalks your way. But I think lots of rain does push plants to bloom so maybe it did get them going.

We have rain here again today and rainy forcasts for the rest of the week. Supposed to be at least 50 though for the week, possibly lots warmer some days. I hope the nicer weather wakes up the plants around here.

Be sure and update us and tells us what you bought at the nursery when you get back later.

I wonder what you will come home with, I can't wait to see.
I went out this morning &, like you, I see more spikes coming out on my tall beardeds. One that was already out for a couple of weeks & just stopped in its tracks is showing yellow at the tip. Not what is supposed to be there, so what else is new :) I swear those garden gremlins are out there moving my stuff around. I think I see purple showing on Daughter of Stars buds too.
Coolish today, but supposed to be in the 70's & 80's the rest of the week, YAH! Should be perfect planting weather for all that you get. I don't think we will get a heavy enough frost to hurt iris buds. It has frosted a couple of times since the buds have been out on mine. Of course, the only tall bearded iris that has bloomed is Crimson King, & maybe that on is really an intermediate size. One plant has 2 severely twisted stalks. I don't know if that is due to cold or what.

I feel your pain Vera. I didn't move I just had to move 14 years of perennial beds from late August when we found out where the new syptec system would have to go till October 11 when it went in. The man from the Health Dept., who had to be there to tell the septic people where they could put it, said to me "you're taking this rather well"! What could we do, rent a port-a-potty and throw our bath water out the window? LOL The weather didn't cooperate with too much rain to dig properly. I sold, gave away and transplanted till the garden area I had free was full of plants. Then I farmed out plants to family and friends. Lastly were the bulbs to hunt for through pictures I had taken. Those were shared with family and planted in every spot I could think of. The worst problem is I didn't get colors of flowers marked as I didn't think there would be a problem and the garden area would be used for the new drainfields. WRONG !! When I replant in the spring I will have no idea what color is near what color. That goes for iris, daylilies, other lilies, bulbs, almost everything! So it will be like starting over again as you are. My garden was one of 12 gardens viewed on our local Garden Walk in 2006. It will have an entirely different look for the next few years until I get everything repositioned and that could take years!! I adore iris. City Lights is my favorite here, it really glows, doesn't it? I had a big iris garden in Montana, maybe 50 varieties, mostly tall bearded, so many that I kept on going and planted all up and down the alley way. They grew so happily there, andd there was a grower (hundreds and hundreds of varieties) right in Billings! It was a sight to behold when they were all in bloom. But I've given up on them here and am trying to concentrate on flowers that like Delaware. OK, here's something to never do. Don't go back to your old house to see your flowers. Julia, I am so glad Clown Parade made it for you. It was reared in North Carolina, so it should have been exposed to some snow there. I have been putting in a lot of hours, but the weeds are "boondogglers" this year. I am so wanting to be on maintenance when the very hot weather gets here. (usually no later than early June). I have got to spread some alfalfa and spray the daylilies (thrips). For some reason I have been quite tired today, so I may and may not get to any of it today. Tamales and Red Hots could come anytime it is convenient for you. I would just pot it and wait til fall to plant it, or wait, whatever. I really appreciate that offer, since I love the hot ones! I have a start of Abileen Lilian to plant, and it is doing well in its pot for now. Digging some starts for a friend who tells me she loves daylilies. I figure to give her about 10 of them. One more time to spray with Pentathlon to kill existing black spot...I have very little, but my elderly neighbor cannot care for her roses anymore, so I am taking care of them for her, and she has a lot of black spot...it is greatly improved after the second spray. I gear up for any fungicides, so I look like a space cartoon when I spray. I bought some Clearys 336 for leaf streak, so I will be wanted to use it soon. I always try to get out super early, and haven't noticed any decrease in the very busy bees around here. Funny how you notice bloom spikes when you are spraying that you don't see just looking at the plants. I hope you get your real spring weather soon. I can't believe Colorado and the other western stated are having to deal with still more snow. I guess it is snow or extreme heat unless you live in California. kay

Thank you IG; I guess you must be right. For one thing, I found the following description for Everything Plus at Heritage Irises: 'but it's problem is that it is not overly tall, and the branching begins right at ground level and works its way up through 4 branches, the lower branch is quite long, coming up almost even with the top branch, I call it the menorah candelabra effect'. I haven't walked out to check precisely, but my iris is indeed a little short and a lower bloom was near ground and seemed unusual. I came home with 10 more azaleas and 4 more hostas I gave two of the azaleas to my neighbor, since she is a wonderful neighbor. If I am ever out of town, she does a better job watering my plants than I do when I am home and I think the world of her.

Well hostas are ok but not a plant I have much of. Now were are you going to put the rest of the Azealas and what color did you get?

Yea, first tall bearded iris bloom. That means your glorious and beautiful iris will soom be in bloom. I can't wait to see pictures.

The first bloom stalks are up, and they are a bit scattered...which is typical of my iris. Thanks for looking. Rita, you know I will be posting:)
