Those things are so hard to kill you could probably just dig them up and toss them in a box and keep cool till you can replant. In your situation it's what I would do. If you have any that are particularly special you might pamper them a little by potting them up or packing in peat. I picked up some that had been sitting on my Grandmother's sidewalk for two weeks in the middle of summer and planted them and they did just fine. I even got one or two blooms the next spring.

You're too cute Karen LOL! I'm thinking about a few other things too if they ground happens to be thaw by then!!!
There's so many of this years winter sown perennials that will be blooming next year and that biennial Blue Sea Holly that I was SO excited to see I'm gonna miss!! I hope I didn't sow all the seeds for that one...yikes, I better go check.

Vera, If you can wait until next spring, and miss the blooms; I can send you MANY Iris rhizomes, mostly "generic purple" but some nice named ones like Earl of Essex and- (Note to Self: find the Iris Bed Map) many others. Keep in touch, I have way more plants than space for them so please let me know! Anyone-please-I don't want them to end up in the compost!

I already did dig up a few of the NOID burgundy/yellow ones and a few pink ones...total of 7 rhizomes. Do I need to let them dry fully before I box them or can I just wrap individually in newspaper (not all the way dry)and store? Will they be ok in an unheated shed? I figure they would be fine out there since they are planted half way out of the ground anyways? Right now they are just sitting in a nursery carry out tray.
Today I plan on taking a lot of pieces of various sedums/hens-n-chicks from the yard. Any of these I know can survive a winter in a shed and still be good as ever clean up into spring with no problems!

I feel your pain Vera. I didn't move I just had to move 14 years of perennial beds from late August when we found out where the new syptec system would have to go till October 11 when it went in.

The man from the Health Dept., who had to be there to tell the septic people where they could put it, said to me "you're taking this rather well"! What could we do,
rent a port-a-potty and throw our bath water out the window? LOL

The weather didn't cooperate with too much rain to dig properly. I sold, gave away and transplanted till the garden area I had free was full of plants. Then I farmed out plants to family and friends. Lastly were the bulbs to hunt for through pictures I had taken. Those were shared with family and planted in every spot I could think of.

The worst problem is I didn't get colors of flowers marked as I didn't think there would be a problem and the garden area would be used for the new drainfields. WRONG !! When I replant in the spring I will have no idea what color is near what color. That goes for iris, daylilies, other lilies, bulbs, almost everything!

So it will be like starting over again as you are.

My garden was one of 12 gardens viewed on our local Garden Walk in 2006. It will have an entirely different look for the next few years until I get everything repositioned and that could take years!!

Actually I'm looking forward to starting over and being able to change things. Now will my body hold up, who knows!?!

Well I got lots of pieces of all my sedums...including lifting out 2 new 'Autumn Joy' that I started from the mother plant summer of 2006...so these were small and only had a few eyes at the base. I also caved in and potted up my Citrus Thyme (Thymus x citriodorus 'Silver Queen'). That one was small too and one I really want to take lots of cuttings from next year and is not available by seed :D
