Comments (22)Ok Michael, I will chime in now. After much thought, my first choice would be a hedge of feijoa (pineapple guava). They are hardy, evergreen, low maintenance plants that can be grown in hedge form and still maintain compact growth. I have a couple and I plan on buying more this spring for privacy hedges. Keep in mind that there are two kinds of feijoas. There is an ornamental type that has small fruits that don't taste very good. Then there is the large fruited variety that has a better taste. Just Fruits and Exotics has the large fruiting kind. Those are very rare. The feijoa also has beautiful flowers. Hopefully you get enough sun to produce some flowers. My other thoughts would be to use herb bushes as already mentioned: rosemary and bay (the cooking variety). I have a friend who put in a mass planting of pineapples in front of his house in a filtered sun area, but you would have to be in zone 9b to do that. Blueberry bushes probably would not work well because the pH around houses is usually on the alkaline side because of lime leaching from the cement foundation. The violas are really so very sweet and you can't help but smile when you see them (a quote from my 4 yr old daughter) As far as the SunHosta, just by weird chance, I linked up to a local grower in Naples "American Farms" on Facebook. Holy moly they have some beautiful plants and a CROP of hosta growing. All their pics are amazing. Crenda, those stones will give off a lot of heat. I had luck with them around my palms where they get a tiny amount of shade but lots of air flow. The ones labeled "SunPatiens" did much better than the New Guinea Impatiens (which actually did say part shade). I got my 10 Amazon Dianthus in this morning and I LOVE THEM! :) Back to surf the American Farms photos and see what to look for next :) Oh and they have that Lady Phlox I mentioned above too, stating Phlox for florida! :) Here's their crop of SunHosta...See MoreZone 9b Pool Landscaping HELP.
Comments (0)We are getting ready to put in a new pool cage, but the screen will be going all the way down to the patio. So, I need to add a 1-2 foot bed around the patio so the landscapers don't sever the screen while trimming. I would LOVE some ideas on flowers, or edibles that I can plant in this area. We live in Zone 9b and do have a sprinkler system, but I am also interested in something that is sturdy, drought tolerant and pretty would be nice. Comments (2)You might be able to prune a lemon tree into that shape, such as Lisbon or Eureka on standard rootstock. I think "evergreen" is the main stickler in your scenario (or edible, but I want my entire garden to be edible--or fragrant--so I would never drop that requirement :) ).
