golden green arrow .

i am trying to restore a dead brain cell ...

i thought. a few years back.. there was a gold version of green arrow.. named something like byoko's sunset.. or something like that ...

seems like dax brought up the subject ...

i cant trace it down.. probably because i have slaughtered the name ...

anyone have any ideas??

I think you are thinking of Boykos Sundown. Stanley and Sons used to list it and Greer Gardens have it in their current catalogue. I have it out of Holland and would be surprised if it was as narrow as Green Arrow, but mine is still small and has not got going yet.

Nope, ken is thinking of a variegated form called 'Sparkling Arrow'. I killed mine unfortunately. Source was a guy who put it on the line to get me one. It must be unknown to the trade as I've never seen or heard word of it anywhere or, someone has the single plant and is propagating it solely to create stock.

pix???? the ONLY reason this thing would need to be staked.. is if your SOIL requires such ... so it wont tip over before it roots in ... are you working in clay ... the prior stake was a shipping stake.. most likely .. the leaders ALWAYS droops.... its genetic.. and for many of my first years... i couldnt believe any of these type plants could grow skyward with such ... its still a mystery to me.. lol .. ignore it.. you have a better chance of breaking it off.. than fixing something that DOES NOT need to be fixed .. and of course.. transplant/shipping shock.. so maybe its a bit increased.. ignore it .. but water properly ... i hope you planted it at the level it was in the pot ... i would just heap mulch over the root ... as best i can.. without burying the trunk ... and wing it ... i THINK these are probably rooted plants.. rather than grafted.. but i would defer on that ... for the first time in 14 years.. mine browned with our winter ... i am sure it will recover .. its just that it surprised me ... i would probably talk with the seller... and ask them what to do about it.. and would ask them to make a file note.. should it fail within the first year .. but i bet it wont ... but what do i know ... pix>??? ken

"Dave, you must be happy that there are people that will stick there neck out that right plants names will be used"... I post photos of my conifers for discussion..There is a lot to be learned by doing this...not only for myself but for others also. I was never aware there was so much confusion regarding plant names. Now I am more confused then ever. What's going on here??? Sometimes I want to argue the point because I can't believe that there is a total disregard for a nursery/grower to misrepresent a what he is selling. Getting back to my cultivar Cedrus libani 'Whatever it is called'...my conifer has an occasional horizontal branch. All others with a little length will become pendulous. None of the branches have a tendency to kick up and become vertical in growth like the one in the Iseli photo. My plant in no way shape or form resembles that plant. It is planted on the North side of the house with nothing between it and the North Pole. Lowest temperature it has been exposed to is -12F.(-24.44C.). Unusual in itself that it survives and is doing well. Anyway the discussion has been interesting with all the different ideas as to what it really is. Dave

abciximab/Patrick - do you recall how tall your smaller potted 'Pendula' was when you planted it? I agree that if the larger B&B plants were changed over to a container and afforded all the care that nurseries would normally provide - root growth should proceed much better than if planted out into the soil. But how many retail consumers are aware of this situation - not many I would bet. Anyway - my situation needs something in the ground this coming late spring, not next fall or the following spring. Maybe tomorrow I'll have a better idea of just what Iseli has to offer. And the reason for Iseli is we can add our order to one of numerous retailers here in the area that get Iseli shipments in the spring Thanks for the comments folks Marshall

Good day,

There is Boyko's Sundown but it is not as narrow as Green Arrow. It does weep but more like Glauca Pendula and has a soft yellow cast to it.

Sparkling Arrow seems to be a skinny fellow just like Green Arrow and it is heavily variegated. I have several on the go with the tallest being about 15inches (45cm).

They are out there...

You dont have to hope, beyond hope. Sparkling Arrow is available at Buckholz Nurseries in Oregon. I saw quite a few when I was there in May this year.

Mine came out of Holland and is a spindly thing, very variegated (white not yellow) and looks quite easy to kill!

Hi Mike,

I only have a few of these little fellows and I would like to grow them on for a year or two so I can graft a bunch. Just remind me in the future if you can't find any and I will bring one down for you perhaps at another meeting.
