What can I plant in NJ?

I'm moving to my new home on the 1st of July. What are my options to begin gardening? I have a large garden with extra planting room in full sun, partial, and full shade areas. The more edibles I can plant, the better :)

Where in New Jersey? Note that New Jersey isn't called "The Garden State" for nuthin'. :-P

Note that many of the summer fruits and veggies that fluffians like myself enjoyed over many many years, came from Jersey - blueberries do well, tomatoes (of course), corn, peaches - much of this coming from South Jersey.

If the plants are fully hardy for your zone, there is no real need to be overly concerned about last frost date. Too late or too early still runs the risk of frozen soils, but if the soil is workable and the plant hardy, you can plant. Frost dates are generally used as benchmarks more with regards to tender perennials/annuals. Perennials with more succulent foliage, like hosta, can be damaged (not killed) by cold if they are fully leafed out then but will releaf rapidly. Although my soils don't freeze to any significance here, we do experience lots of frost, some rather late season and some quite severe. It doesn't bother the perennials at all. I've even planted a full perennial border in mid-December right before a 2 week cold snap into the low 20's - the plants never even blinked.

We used to frequent this nursery often. It was run by an old gent who I believe died of cancer 2 years ago. His wife tried to run the business the next year but decided it was too much work and closed the nursery. It was open to the public. He had a tremendous selection of hundreds of different kinds of prennials sold very cheaply in small 1 - 1 1/2" pots. When we first went 8-10 years ago they sold for about 59 cents and toward the end it was 99 cents or more for the littlest pots. Of course the bigger pots 4" were about 4.99 -5.99 and up. Still a bargain for unusual plants. Apparently he grew all the prennials from seed but later as his health must have been failing he bought them from a wholesale grower. He took a liking to us and showed his propagating greenhouses with thousands of tiny plants. He also sold annuals and veggies. He had a great selection of unusual hot peppers and tomatoes. We bought many unusual plants from him, not the usual run of the mill plants everyone sells. He will be missed. We couldn't wait for them to open in the Spring. I hope you do buy or lease the operation and offer the great selection of plants he offered. Best of luck to you.

For mail order I have used Ernst Conservation Seeds (http://www.ernstseed.com/) a number of times for plants and seed. Their catalog is pretty good about specifying the "ecotype" of the species and whether the species is native or not. I have also used Wild Life Nursery in Wisconsin (I don't think they have a web site) for bare root plants and seed -- I am growing some Duck Potatoes I got from them and they're big now. I am also attaching a link for native plant nurseries for the Chesapeake Bay area which includes a few New Jersey nurseries. I have not done business with any of these New Jersey nurseries so I can't comment on their quality. Up in North Jersey. ;-)

You should still be good with all sorts of things including what I listed. You can make a nice bed for the summer veggies in the sun and even try grapes. You can grow strawberries in sun or part sun. Also fruit trees like peaches, pears, apples, cherries, and plums. It all depends on how much work you want to go through to prepare for what you want to grow and also guard against the critters that might eat your harvest before you do (ie., deer, racoons, squirrels, skunk, ground hogs, rabbits, chipmunks, moles, voles, and even Canada geese - which I noticed seem to hang out in North Jersey 'burbs...lol). :-) This means you may want to consider fencing, netting, and other deterrants as part of your planning.

Thanks Jenny, I will look into all of the fruit trees you mentioned. Will they survive outdoors in the winter here?

I live in Central NJ, and here's a list of the edibles I have growing and thriving on my 1 acre:

Fruits:
Blueberries
Raspberries
Blackberries
Strawberries
Mulberry trees

Overwinter-able veggies:
Spinach
Onions
Garlic

Spring/Summer/Fall veggies:
Tomatoes
Peppers
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Carrots
Lettuce
Radishes
Turnips
Watermelon
Muskmelon/Cantoloupe
Squash
Green Peas
Beans

This is what I've grown successfully, and that's pretty much all I've ever tried. Basically, in zone 6 NJ, you can grow pretty much ANYTHING, except citrus and tropicals perhaps (even with some exceptions).

I just ate through a beautiful bunch of grapes from a friend's home in Williamsburg Brooklyn (seems they're from vines planted when the home was built around 1906- over a foot thick at the ground). I kept a bunch of the seeds. I live in Morris County. Any ideas as to when I should plant them in my area?
