It would be better to spray all the daylilies. And spray again in about five days unless the systemic insecticide is supposed to last more than a week. If you don't spray some plants, they will just be a source of re-infestation. So be neighborly! ;0)

hi the 3 in 1 lasts up to 30 days so I would just apply it once and then if you have a problem apply again or use a small amount of liquid dish soap in a gallon of water to control.

I've already talked to my immediate neighbors and I'm going to spray their plants in the morning. If I get motivated enough maybe I'll just start spraying the entire street. I really don't want to fight these all summer. I got squash bugs at the end of the summer last year and they devastated my yellow squash. Not going to happen to my DL's!

I get aphids every year as the weather starts warming, which for us here near Augusta is right now - - the temperature has been 80+ since the weekend, although it is going to get cool, cloudy and wet (we hope) starting Friday. The daylilies are some of the few bits of tender new growth emerging, and the aphids love them!

Olga, yes, the leaves may be a bit sticky if you have alot of aphids. However,if you have a lot of aphids you should also be able to see little whitish specks all over the leaves (the bodies that the aphids have molted out of). The aphids actually live most of their lives on the under-side of the leaves, so if you are spraying with a soap solution or a non-systemic, you need to be sure that the spray reaches the under-side of the leaves.

I was about to post a question on this very topic and saw YOUR post. I went out and bought the Bayer 3:1 systemic...then the rain started coming and it's been raining this whole weekend and today too!!! I decided to wait to do any spraying, maybe the rain and wind will blow them away? wishful thinking?

So am I understanding this correctly, spray just what I see aphids on? but not necessarily all the "neighboring" plants?

I have aphids too... But I'm going to do as usual and wait on the ladybugs to come in. Shouldn't be too much longer before they appear here. I'm normally aphid-free in about a week after I start seeing them.

wildflower...don't be playing with me here. REALLY? I had the hose in hand today when I noticed my aphids, so I turned the jet on them and washed out a lady bug. There was a ladybug down in the whorl of most of the new growths, just one per. I would love to stay organic, and I can handle a bit of damage....I think. I think I can.

Petalpatsy, I've been seeing some ladybugs too the last few days. Still have aphids but they aren't nearly as bad as they were. They will tear them up.. Just takes a little time and patience... And I havn't seen any of the ladybug larvae yet this year. Probably still too early. Here's a pic of what they look like just in case anybody isn't famalier with them:

If I remember right, they larvae supposedely eat even more aphids than the ladybugs.

Nothing against any of you that are spraying... I'm not totally organic and probably never will be, but I hate spraying insecticides unless it's absolutely necessary. I've been on the hunt for a while for a small amount of Forbid miticide (not for daylilies), but I'm about to give up on that and just get rid of the plants that I need it for. I guess there isn't always a preditory insect around for everything when you need it!

But aphids I never worry about here..

Thanks Wildflower. I do tons of compost and I just hate to hurt all my happy worms. I'll stick to the hose as best I can.
