anyone else watering in OK

I was going to wait for some spring rain, but it's been so extremely dry here and today so nice and warm, also a burn warning of western OK on the news this morning..hmm.

And I had recently read something about Daylilies LOVE water.

SO I got out the sprinklers last night and let them run, also more this morning... I just wasnt' sure since our last frost officially is not until after April 15..., well that's the average safe date anyhow.

Another thing I was thinking about today while digging up a texas lilac bush to take over to my folks place (yes I needed the room for more flowers on order), I was digging up a lot of roots. I know there are a lot of tree roots that reach up into my beds... and I started thinking about how daylies like "well drained soil", and thought well maybe the roots help drain that soil... ha ha.

actually I figure if I can dig up the beds and till them every other fall, I should be doing all right as far as keeping the tree roots out. Its mainly because of the silver maples in the backyard! UGH.

and just for fun, something completely nothing to do with daylilies... can you guess the plant?

Well we're dryer than heck here in CO too. The lawn was so crispy it crunched when I walked on it.

I did the same- several 60 degree days so I drug out the hoses and watered about every square inch of the lot that doesn't have house on it.

Our last frost isn't until May 15. I don't dare light off the underground sprinkler system this early but the hoses can freeze/thaw w/o major damage so long as they are disconnected from the faucet every night.

I haven't the foggiest what you little plant is. If I were to guess I'd say flowering quince or wegeila??

I'm going to guess a Magnolia tree on the plant.
Although I just planted one last year and have no
idea what it's growth rate or habits are.

It seems a little early to start watering, but I'm not familiar your zone to really know.

Its hard to say whats worse... My problem is too much rain... Over 7 inches of rain since the start of the month. More in the forecast the next 2 days (possibly inches). We are very close to breaking record rainfall totals for the month (around 10 inches)... I can't remember the last time i had to hand water my tomatoes... probably never. I use a lot of mulch the way it is and up here rain is very reliable during the summer months (we seem to sit between the heat to the south and the cool to the north). Lots of fronts move through here during the summer months. I do have to water my container plants if we go more then a few days without rain. They seem to rapidly dry out sitting in the sun on the driveway. The one thing about that is the well water here is very cold, and high in pH, so i tend to fill up a 30 gallon bin and let it sit before using it on my plants (it warms quickly in the sun)...

I've been on a mission for years, to find anyone who can offer anything definitive on why you shouldn't water with cold water directly from the tap. I've asked at least 50 people with horticulture-related degrees and none could think of any reason it might be detrimental. On the flip side of the coin, we know that watering with water warmer than 90* or so carries the potential to impact root function or even kill roots if warm enough. Water that feels warm to the touch will be close to 100* or warmer (warmer than body temp, at any rate), so, warmer than the plant would prefer. In physics, the second law of thermodynamics says that heat flows naturally from a material at a higher temperature to material at a lower temperature, so from the warm water to the cooler (room temp) soil. The increase in warmth of the soil corresponds to an equal degree of cooling of the water as it passes through the soil, so it feels much cooler when it exits the drain hole. thanks jack, I plan on aerating this fall and de-thatching to remove any dead brown material next spring. The lawn is very thick and weed free. Even though most of the dollar spot is in a full sun area; the large amount of rain we received this spring and some poor judgment on my part with over watering (never had an irrigation system before) provide a rich environment for the dollar spot. I am hoping changes to my lawn care system will alleviate the problem next spring. I am trying to understand the proper timing to water. i.e. when the grass appearance indicates it needs water, screw driver insertion test etc. I also plan on completing a soil betterment program this growing season that Morph had suggested based on a Logan Lab's Soil Test result. Along with supplementing the program with Milorganite in early September.

Is that a horsechestnut? Buckeye?

We are watering in Wichita. Mother nature was real stingy with the snow this winter. Guess we're lucky, we missed out on the ice, too. Soil is dry dry dry, and the wind just won't stop. I'm mulching like crazy, trying to keep plants from growing because I KNOW it will freeze again and again. Worst thing is the mulch keeps blowing off, and I have to use soaker hoses because spray never reaches the ground. It's supposed to rain this weekend and the only way I know of to increase that chance is for me to water real good beforehand.

wichita, i hear you about the freeze again, we might get down to 32 this weekend actually, but I'm watering anyway.
also my crushed dried leaves mulch blows off here completely in some places, ughh, I'm putting down rabbit manure today on some beds and that stays pretty good. the thunderstorms were supposed to come in today but I'm not sure they will.

cindi, you got it, it's a buckeye tree. and boy are they SLOW growers.....but I'm sticking with it.

Yup my house would be the one in march with the sheets and blankets and buckets over certain plants when we get a late freeze. ha looks pretty funny in the morning, but you do what you have to...

Hah! Deangreen, The picture in my mind of all those plant coverings sounds just like my yard...except the wind is usually so strong that I can't keep the buckets & sheets down on the plants.

We had one of those blasted windy days yesterday.

Last year I had just received my first daylily order the last week of April, got them planted, and the next day it went down to 22 degrees. Of course I ran out trying to cover them but the wind lifted every pot & bucket I put down before I even got all the plants covered. I didn't have enough bricks to hold them all down. I lost several of the new daylilies from that.

Cindi, The wind always comes in from the North here. When you find this kind of stuff blowing into your yard it probably made it there all the way from my house in CO! LOL.... All the yard stuff from WY floats into my place, I'm sure.
