Happiness in a Postal Package!

Not realizing the chill would linger quite so long, I asked to have one small order of daylilies sent and it just MADE my day when the postal package appeared on my doorstep.

My neighbor took one look at the package, one at my overjoyed face and said "Uh.OH. It's spring. Here we go." before shaking her head and heading away.

VERY generous plant of Casper's Shadow, Somewhat Beautiful and bonus of Ronald McClure (which I vaguely remember seeing on LA and am trying to google an image)

My fngers are ITCHING to plant!

That is too exciting!!! I got an order today too, but I ordered it i the fall. Mine had Purple Honey Creeper, Bird Talk, Pansy Ey, and the bonus wa Asian Fairy Bluebird.

Christmas in March!!! Let's do the happy dane.

Wow, it sure is early to be planting new daylilies here on Long Island. Maybe you can get them planted before the rain we are supposed to get tonight and Friday (maybe even snow showers). If the ground is not frozen I guess you can dig, I moved some daylilies and shrubs near the begining of March. Course, it was warmer then and been colder lately.

Yes, I didn't try that exact number, I don't think, but I got someone who passed me off to the local USPS consumer dept. When I got the live person here in town, they were not helpful. Not even sympathetic to my plight! GGG I ended up writing a letter and sending it to the head of the USPS Board of Governors who oversees postage increases. But then I thought I would also send a copy to my 2 state senators which you can do on an email form -- copy & paste style. I cited that the USPS told the public that is was a nominal rate change, yet on the things I mailed most often, it was over a 200% increase! That I feel they snuck in exhorbitant charges, even though their assigned task is not to make a profit. LOL Jack...you should patent this method of rooting and add it to the never-ending list. My greatest success ratio (9 out of 10) came from the most crude method I've ever used (before I got smart and learned about vermiculite, bags, cups, etc.). Also, some of these were very large branches with multiple limbs on them. I put some topsoil in pots, poked a hole where the cutting would go, sprinkled some powdered rooting hormone in the hole, dipped the cutting in water & sprinkled some hormone on the cutting, stuck it in the hole and watered. I just put them in the shade. That was last March. Several of these now look like two year old trees. Here in the land of humidity I don't think it needs to be any more scientific than that. This year I'm going to use that as my main method. I just hope cuttings that have been in the refrigerator will do as well as the ones I potted up immediately after pruning them. Henry

Mariend, I've got you beat in the "Lost pkg" dept.We mailed a pkg to our GD 7 hours away in N.Calif on Jan 16th and she still hasn't got it.Everyone and their brother in the postal system is looking for it.I have sent pictures and all the info to the lost & found place in L.A. and our local Po is also looking for it.It's not a small pkg,so not easily lost.Personally we think someone stole it. The box DH used to ship it was a recycled box and he didn't cross off all the info on the box like i always do,so someone probably thought they were getting a "bullet thingy,blender etc"and if that was so they got a big surprise,as it was a twin size blow up bed,by Simmons. Also when you call our local PO the line always has a busy signal,24/7.I even called the phone co last week and had them try it,and they got the same thing,yet they said no one was on the line.I told the PO this,but they swear it's working,NOT!! Everyone, thank you for your words of encouragement ..patti43, yes I have posted here before but it's been about a year and I love coming here to talk to this wonderful bunch of people, and yes I'm keeping my chin up ( both of them) lol..jennava, I'm 51 and gave him the best years of my life..he's74 and thinks he's40, he's got 4 boys that he doesn't have a good relation ship with..I've never met anyone his age that was so disrespectful..there was mental abuse during the whole marriage..after we were married he didn't want to leave the home he shared with his first wife and i wasnt allowed to change anything in the house at all..he kept her picture hung on the wall right outside the bedroom door and we constantly argued about that, his response was" where is that jealousy coming from..when we got to the 7 th year I took the picture down and we had a major argument about it he tells me my boys want to see their mothers picture, can u believe that..I told him make them copies, ..onward and upward..his girlfriend can have that toad who perpetrated as a prince.. Trying to sell everything at his house because I need the money more than the stuff.

I heard that Purple Honey Creeper and AFB are both supposed to be really nice/fairly true to hybridizer's pictures! Can't wait to see your pics!

Those are really good ones!!!! You must post pictures when they bloom. Nothing better than getting a package of daylilies!!! Funny about your neighbor!!

Cindy, I will post pics! Yes, my neighbors know me well (everyone's apts overlook my garden)so they always see me shoving dirt and I swear they must be "Look at that crazy girl with the hundreds of containers again. She's nuts" LOL Oh well, just adding my small bit of oxygen to my little corner of the earth. My husband did ask me one day though when he realized my UPS/Postal people were hailing me and saying "hi" quite a ways from where I live. He was like "this is NY and the delivery people know you.. should I be worried about how many packages are arriving?"

Rita.. I think b/c I'm in Queens we're getting rain and not snow..I traded with someone near you a few weeks ago and he was like "I'm getting snow" and we just got rain. I'm hoping to acclimatize these for a few days then put in ground.

Well now, aren't you the lucky one!!! YAAAY!! I love getting packages but haven't started getting many yet. Your neighbors ought to be thankful you are giving them something of beauty to look at everyday. You husband sounds like mine. My packages do get dropped off at other houses though when they change up the drivers. Luckily the other houses are family members so they promptly bring them to me. Enjoy and waiting to see pics of your new babies. Judy

I am in Nassau County on the North Shore. I can see Long Island Sound from my front windows. I am hoping no more snow.

HI, Judy. :) Most of my packages are supposed to be arriving in Aprilish, so this was kinda fun! Lucky they ARE family members. I've had to track down packages 2 blocks down and it's very embarrassing/interesting trying to communicate "I live up the block and I think my package was mistakenly delivered here " with someone who speaks Mandarin Chinese and I know none. :)

Oh I know you was dancing the happy dance, with a package with daylilies in it.Hope you can get them planted soon, even tho winter just dont seem to want to give up and go away.

*sigh* Packages...I can't wait! I've worked a billlion of so hours of overtime and so I treated myself to some nice plants year so I cannot wait to get them in the ground.

always tell me husband that I sent a present to myself. "What did I get me?" lol

Since they were such nice plants can you tell us where they came from? I'm new to this and maybe that's not allowed. Can you plant them already or will you pot them up and baby them for awhile? Either way it sounds like fun to me. I am going to put another log on the fire this morning. Uuug

LOL. YOu guys are the BEST! Where else can I state "I got a package"and have a virtual online party with ppl who understand the joy of opening newspaper-wrapped daylilies one has sent oneself. ;)

prettypetals..you have NO idea. LOL I talk way too much anyway, so I just keep going,smile,and gesture a lot..it usually works for me (or ppl are just being polite and then walk away secretly thinking "nutjob" ) LOL

Lucky you! I love getting packages of daylilies--or any plants for that matter, but it will be a few weeks before mine start arriving. Spring is quite reluctant to arrive this year.
Can't wait to see pictures of everyone's new babies. Sounds like you got some great ones.

BooHoo - no plant packages for me, no space left and my DH
says I can't dig up any more grass.

If it wasn't for QVC, I wouldn't get any packages at all.

Kay/phal you are cracking me up! Bummer that husband won't let lawn go. I've heard that getting rid of the lawn is supposed to be a great step towards being "green" since plants are less maintenance.;)

Yeah!!! new plants are always fun! Enjoy playing in the dirt.

You guys are all cracking me up. Kay/phal I keep showing my dad pics of Rita's place from last year or so where the only lawn in the pic is the walkway!!! LOL. I keep telling him "just think how fast it would be to mow the lawn!!!" LOL LOL LOL! I have yet to try the "green approach" thats a good one.

Flowergirl929, I for one love to hear about a great seller! It never hurts to praise good sellers. One must be a bit more careful when discussing sellers that are not great, but nobody ever gets upset about good press.:-)

So Crackingtheconcrete, fess up, who'd you get them from ?We're all dying to know.

Yes, I think it is OK to tell where you got your plants, especially if the experience has been good!!! We all do want to know. Now, this may sound crazy too, but I equate the smell of opening up a package of daylilies to new car smell.!!! I won't get any packages until the first of May.

OOH, you're right, Cindy.. daylilies have a definite smell coming out of the box.
Okqy,I got from Jrt on LA..I LOVE his seedlings, and although I know southern sellers have bigger looking plants in general, his still seem very generous and healthy to me! I got this awesome triangular peach seedling with (puckers? CAn't think of word) ..like Bonnie HOlley only in cooler shape/color last year and I'm really wanting to see if it survived winter.. but (as usual) didn't label well!

Well at least the weather is turning towards the warmer should be spring temps. Getting any more daylilies soon LOL? I pushed the season here too but I just did that by moving some daylilies around.

Hey, Rita :) I'm going to ask one of the LA sellers who wanted a shipping date to go ahead and send and I think the rest will be coming late April b/c i heard ppl in Sunny Cali are getting a lot of rain so they're not lifting.

Unfortunately, I have to buy dirt again (love that NYC environment..We gotta PAY for our dirt) so I can plant the rest.. I swear I've spent more on dirt than actual flowers.

And rearranging is a great way to feel like you're planting something "new" LOL
