Phlox paniculata - is this a seed or seed POD?
Comments (4)Well mine haven't popped open so now I'm having doubts about whether they're any good. They were dry when I collected them but maybe our hot summer made them dry up before they were filled out or something. Terrene - My phlox 'David' has done just the opposite, several volunteers but only one with white flowers that I know of. The rest have all been the common pinkish purple color or near it. No mildew so far though. The one I'm trying to collect seeds from is a reverted 'Peppermint Twist'. The flowers are a pretty coral pink (solid) and I just wanted to see what I would get, with my luck, probably that same pinkish purple color but it's fun to try. I also planted Peacock Purple Bicolor this year but I haven't found any seeds on it. It didn't bloom very well. I tried to root a couple cuttings from Peppermint Twist but they didn't take. I suspect it was too late in the summer. I've never tried cuttings taken from the roots and I'm afraid I'll kill it. Thanks : )...See MoreTouch me not plant? Pops when you touch it
Comments (8)There are a few North American natives in the "touch-me-not" family .... impatiens capensis (orange jewelweed), impatiens noli-tangere (western touch-me-not), impatiens pallida (pale touch-me-not), impatiens aurelia (pale yellow touch-me-not), impatiens ecalcarata (spurless touch-me-not). They're all annuals (I think), but with the seeds popping all over the place, there shouldn't be a problem keeping them going year after year. I've read that they need a cold/moist period to germinate, so they would be excellent candidates for WSing. Invasive? I suppose it could be, but you could keep those popping seeds in check, or be ready to pull up seedlings when you see them. I've seen seeds sold at Prairie Moon, but there must be other places where they are sold. (You didn't get any seeds from your relatives?) PV...See MoreDatura seed pods bursting while still green?
Comments (1)Greenpassion, That is normal for them. When they open I remove from the mother plant, open the pod and collect the seeds, allow them to dry then store for next years crop. There are in excess of 50-100 seeds in each pod. If you wait for the pod to open on it's own you may loose seeds to mould. pa...See MoreGrowing Huernia/Stapelias From Seed???
Comments (3)I know nothing about this, hopefully you'l get good info from the experts on this board. I did want to mention that I have found excellent, in depth, seed growing info on the BCSS board, British Cactus and Succulent Society, http://forum.bcss.org.uk/index.php. There are some super long detailed threads on growing from seed. Good luck and let usknow if you;re successful, I love stapeliads, sp? but haven;t been willing to budget for them yet! Growing from seed would be awesome!...See Morekaryn1
