Spacecoast Gator Eye Description

I have been "eye"ing this dl for a while, wondering if I wanted to get it or not and I was wondering why SGE is listed in AHS as "Lavender with purple eye and edge above yellow green throat"? I would think it would be cream with a purple eye. On Kinnebrew's website it looks totally different than some other websites.

I think I need a color wheel for these descriptions!!

I don't have a very scintillating picture of this one but here's how it looks here in VA. It doesn't look lavender here!

Definitely appears more of a cream with a plum eye/ double edge.

Oh Julie, I think that's gorgeous! Actually prettier than a lot of the pictures I've seen on some of the websites, even Kinnebrew's. One of the synonyms for "scintillating" is "dazzling" and this one does it for me. My local dl farm has it listed for $15 and I guess I'm going to have to get it.

My Maryotts order came today, same day my Bettys Country Garden order came, so there were two hugh boxes sitting on the front porch when I came home from doing afew errands. I tell you the later in the year, the more fans per plant. There are numberous ones with five hugh fans all growing in a clump shipped as one order. Just increadable. The quality just astounds me. I got two Wild Cherry Roundups as my Special Gift Bonus and then I got MORE bonus plants. Two Cameo Luster (Maryott 2005 $75.00 apiece)a lovely ruffled pale pink, Two Spacecoast ones and I don't have any spacecoast before this. Got Spacecoast Cotton Candy and Spacecoast Royal Ransom. Then I got In Style a $100 2007 Maryott intro and another Incendiary a $100 2007 Maryotts intro. I had gotten one of those in a prior order. And the plants I ordered are mostly hugh. Many are going to make instant clumps. I am just one happy camper about my daylilies.

Well I can't take credit for any of these beyond having germinated & grown them out. Even then you all deserve a lot of the credit for tutoring me all the way. All are from purchased seed. My goal with these was first, to learn the process, and second to get some bridge plants with good up-to-date genetics for future hybridizing. I also wanted to post the good & the bad because I know there are other newbies like myself out there. Most people only post the best pictures of the best behaved seedlings but it helps me to know what to expect if I see both good & bad blooms as the plant matures. More excitement in the seedling bed the past 2 days. Here is FFO on the third sibling from the 'Spacecoast Sharptooth' x 'Wisest of Wizards' cross. I'm really excited about this one. It is the second best branched of the cross and great increase (4 fans already). The edge is incredible. I've never seen so much metallic gold. Crossed it with 'Cleopatra's Jewel' just for the edge. Hope it keeps its bright colors. Here are two FFO today from a new cross 'Jennifer Trimmer' x 'Maltese Falcon' This first one is very difficult to capture correctly on camera. The color is maroon & gold, exactly the color of my high school colors. The sepals & eyezone are stippled softly and the finish is a nice crepe texture. Good height at 24" and 5.75" flower. BC 10 BR 3 trying for 4th. The second is smoother, shinier finish and less green to the throat. 19" x 5" BC & BR a little less than sibling -001. And finally, much improved blooms on 3 of the 'Fencing Master' x 'China Clipper' cross. -002 I can't even believe its the same plant. It was nice to have all three of them blooming at the same time to compare side-by-side.

I totally agree, another NOID to add to my collection or if it doesn't shape up the other 150 seeds I got started this year may just replace it. Marric, if I figure out who this is I'll let you know. The color is accurate when I look at it on my screen. I bought it from Vesey's and usually don't buy plants from catalogues, but have always had good luck with their seeds. Flora

I grew SC Gator Eye for a few years, waiting for the color to improve with each bloom season. Unfortunately, it never did. The colors were always terribly muddy, somewhere between a mauve and a brown.

I finally shipped it South to live elsewhere. Evidently, the warmer climate didn't help, since the new owner's photos looked the same as mine.

Hmmm. I think I'll hold off ordering it until I go to the dl farm and see it for myself. Hope it's blooming when I go. Thanks for the info, max.

Although this cultivar has never appeared "muddy" for me, it is always a good idea to check with those in your climate zone who have successfully grown it! I had to send a few Kinnebrew daylilies "South" a couple of years ago, although most are very hardy for me. SP. CREAM SUPREME just didn't like it here!

Floota, that's disappointing news -- I added SC Cream Supreme last year, and I'm quite a bit further north than you. I'd heard some of the Kinnebrews I'd wanted were iffy in my zone (namely, SC Dream Catcher and SC Dragon Prince). Any info on those?

SP. DRAGON PRINCE does fine here,and has been here since whenever it came out.
I don't grow DREAMCATCHER, but have about 25 of his and most of them do just fine. Here's DRAGON PRINCE:
