I grow it, at least the straight species (A. martima). I haven't had it self sow, but I doubt my few plants are thrilled with where I have them either. A friend of mine has had some clumps as long as I've known her (the deer ignore them) and she once told me she had some come up from seed. If so, I would be tempted to guess that the fact that my friend NEVER EVER weeds (you know who you are!) may be the key to her seedlings' survival, since the plants aren't very fast growing here (that I've noticed) and any tiny seedlings would probably be mistaken for weeds by me.

I wonder if you could grow them in a container and store it somewhere sheltered? It might be worth a shot.

I grow it. I have never seen it self sowing though. I have a small clump that I bought as nursery grown that has slowly spread, but I believe from underground runners. I have also collected seed from one growinng wild in the sand dunes at the beach and managed to wintersow it successfully. The resulting plant has been unbelievably slow to develop though. I suspect my heavy soil doesn't help. It does grow wild in the sand dunes in the southern areas of the country. It's a pretty ground cover with the look of a grass having a somewhat bad hair day :-)

Thanks Kent and Eduarda. I guess I'll have to pass on it then if it's that slow growing. It would freeze off before it ever got going here. Pretty little thing in the picture, though.

I can't resist jumping in here.
I have no personal knowledge of this plant, nor do I know if it self sows,
but Armeria x formosa IS supposed to be hardy to zone 4 when it has excellent drainage.
I'm tempted to try it myself.

A sweet little evergreen plant. I have it growing in clumps along a path.
It looks tidy 12 months a years. I was just admiring mine today. I even said, 'aren't you cute' to it.

I grew Armeria martima Common Thrift from seed in 1999. It has survived all these years but is not much larger than when I planted it. It's about 4 inches wide. It probably should have several growing together because it is so small. It usually is evergreen but some winters it gets die-back (turns brown) but it always comes back.
