Does it seem like dip mega performers are gone?

Besides Black Panther, I was thinking I haven't seen many super performers lately in the way of diploids. Many that seem to come out have gorgeous faces and acceptable bud counts and branching, but not that old-timey charm and statuesque garden presence. I was looking at my inventiry- Priscilla's Dream had super buds and branching for me, same for Little Grapette, Patti Neyland, Shy Girl newish), Stars My Destination (newish), Janice BrownIf anyone has seen some newer great dips, please let me know. And list more DORMANTS if you know any great ones, please! Old or new...

Anyone else love dips as much as I do? (joke included) *smile*

There are some active serious diploid breeders working their genes collections @ this time. I'm a bit squeezed for time at this moment so will list the 'Top-of-Mind' ones for you to check out. All have websites & intros listings on/via Charlotte's ... Tom Polston + Richard Norris + Bob Sobek + Darryl Apps + Mike Huben + C. Turner + (?) Derrow + Doorakian + Carpenter + many others. Some tetraploid breeders also work (quietly) with dips to develop/find unique plants to convert to tets for breeding. Am I correct to say (?) that most anything new or exciting in tets - except teeth & grotesque edges - have been introduced to the tetraploid genetic pool from converted diploids. Stars My Destination + Gabriel's Weathervane + Her Best Bloomers + Stella's Ruffled Fingers + Peanut Butter Frenzy come to mind ...

Clatification ... My previous message is not very clear ... Could be misleading .. The mentioned dip cultivars are NOT listed as converts to tets, but as interesting intros with their own unique or unusual characteristics to investigate.

@oleg9grower As I said you can feel free to fact check this because it's a mix of advice from different sources. Sorry if the question mark in the title was not enough to indicate that what I offered is a starting-point. But I was hoping that others might provide information that replaces some parts of a working theory, to the benefit of everyone. I find that an incomplete "theory" is often more useful than accurate "advice." That's because a person's good record of his/her personal gardening techniques may be totally unrelated to your particular location, circumstances, disposition, and abilities, plus when they advise something that works for them they may not realize you lack other information that would tell you how to do what they advise. But if you instead use your knowledge to get inside the plant and understand how it works, from there you can creatively improvise to get it what it needs in many different ways. In education this is called "conceptual knowledge" vs "procedural knowledge" and it is the former category that is considered to be far more useful to a maturing student; they will someday have questions that do not relate to what was specifically taught in school as "facts," or if they forget "facts" and have to figure out how to remember them. In the same way I think explaining "what's going on" in the plant is going to take you much farther than "you should water it like this and plant it like this." You can invent your own techniques when you understand "what's going on." What I thought was most interesting - that hippeastrums produce an embryonic bud every 7 leaves and it can either abort or grow - came from a professional botanist here in Denver. I think that is really useful in telling growers how many blooms to expect or how often it can bloom or why a really healthy plant doesn't just bloom constantly. Maybe the quote you are citing refers to just that - that the bulb produces embryonic buds on a regular schedule regardless of whether they are triggered to bloom. Not sure what was meant by "initiate." But surely they bloom far less often than every 5-13 weeks. Right? I am assuming that many of us on this forum are not trained botanists, and even whatever science is done on hippeastrums is tilted towards techniques for commercial growing which don't apply to hobbyists. So we are just going to have to do our own science and put together our observations to make theories that apply to our own settings, and I think we can do that successfully as a group. This gardening forum may not look much like a peer-reviewed journal...but remember that genetics were discovered by a gardener with no scientific background! Now when observations come in that contradict your theory, your first response is going to see if some nuance or quirk allows them to fit into your theory anyway. That's why I suggest that some hippeastrums that appear to bloom in fall could be seeing increased light because the sun is getting lower in the sky, so still fit the same picture. Or maybe there are specific varieties that bloom in fall but the ones I have worked with are still spring-blooming types. If light is not a factor in hippeastrum blooming, I would then turn to you and ask how it is that they all "know" to bloom in spring when they're in my windowsill even though they were on all different clocks originally, that it doesn't seem to relate to water...and how is it that they will bloom a second time during the same year if they are put outside on a porch where the light increases further, again, unrelated to watering, and definitely "off the clock" they would internally have? Very happy to replace my ideas with new ones - but I find that knowledge increases at a faster rate when you have a theory to begin with, even if it ends up being wrong. So dive in and tell me what you know that improves any of this.

New a/c but doesn't perform like other a/c systems

So yesterday buddy comes over to look over things with the a/c system and I think we've got things nailed down properly now. The superheat for the given ambient temperature and heat loading from the indoor coil was way off (5F) vs. the 14-15F that it was supposed to be so he had to remove some of the refrigerant (I was quite surprised how little he had to remove to get the superheat up) and we even went as far as measuring the furnace's CFM flow rating using a differential manometer. I'm pushing roughly 1000CFM across a 2 ton coil so which is a tad bit on the high side but my colleauge says it's a margin of safety for the a/c to not freeze over as we have relatively little humidity in the air would means that on the cooler days we wouldn't be heat loading the coil enough which could lead to freeze up. I personally would like to try running my furnace on the lowest speed to get the 855 CFM but I'm not sure how that will affect the superheat. Presumably I would imagine that if a system is charged properly using the superheat method for fixed orifice systems that blower speed shouldn't dramatically impact the superheat values to the point where they're completely out of whack. I would guess that superheat would rise but isn't that sort of a given? I mean hotter days for example would increase loading so therefore superheat should rise no? For the record the pressure reading on the manometer with the furnace on medium low with a 3M 1500 series filter installed has a -0.44 in wg static pressure difference. With no filter the static pressure diff changes to -0.55. Humidity was still somewhat of an issue yesterday night when it was raining but it was quite cool outside. I had to drop the tstat to 21C to force start the a/c on but after just 20 minutes the house was nice and dry and less stuffy. Just for the sake of my understanding does TXV technically do any better or worse job of temperature/humidity control over a fixed orifice system IF both systems were installed properly and charged to near perfection? I have a friend that is looking to install a/c and his contractor insists on having TXV and says that fixed orifice is evil and should never be used. I find that rather extreme to make a claim like that. I've tried to do my own research online and although it's a given that TXV is the way to go I think it has a lot to do with the fact that it will better protect the compressor from liquid flooding + it's more forgiving for techs that do an incorrect charge on the system - critical charge isn't nearly as important on a TXV system vs. fixed orifice. First, I would invest half to see if I could make more money, at least keep the buying power I have and earn a modest living. Then, I would take my time deciding what to do with the remainder. for certain, I would set up trust funds for my adult children and a college fund for my 4 yr old granddaughter, There would be a gift to our religion's building fund. I would put aside 'safety' money that would be sufficient to support us for a number of years, and that would not have to be for a long period because of my our ages and we do not expect to live past 100 yrs. Right now, we could make do quite nicely with the cars we have, but I would opt to get my wife a better car of her choice. For myself, I could drive my '98 Jeep for a couple more years, but i could move up to a later, much nicer model that has improved ride. Some time after 1998, Jeep changed the Cherokees to independent suspension and better road noise isolation. That would be mt winter time driver. I'd use someting else in warmer weather. My wife has a yen to take a cruise up the Alaska coast. I suppose I could sit on the confines of a ship that long, maybe better yet, drive to Alaska, but we'd be limited to where we could go. Only a small part of the Alaskian coast is accessible by road (from Canada). For the splurge part, i might buy two residences: one for summer and another for winter. Maybe lease rather than buy the winter one since that would be our shorter season. Given some time,I'm sure that I could come up with fun and interesting things to do. For example, it might be interestng to experiment with educational venues where the object would be immerse the participant into past methods and nearly lost arts of livelihood. It would be like a summer camp employing old home making methods. The primary focus would be to produce your own food both plant and animal derived, and then make clothing from scratch. That means spinning your own yarn for knitting and weaving. Machine made thread would be allowed, but sewing machines would be foot powered only.

All structural members will deflect or flex under load. That's just basic physics, not an attempt by your builder to cheat you or cause you harm or which demands remediation. The amount of deflection or flex depends on the load applied, the span, and the properties of the structural member(s). The building code specifies the maximum allowable deflection for a structural member (e.g., rafter, steel lintel, header, floor joist, ceiling joist, etc.) The amount of code-allowable deflection varies depending on the application. For example, a steel lintel supporting a masonry wall would not be allowed to deflect as much as a framed wall with a flexible cladding like vinyl siding. That should square with the "common sense" test or what engineers like to say is "intuitively obvious." For simply supported spans, the maximum deflection is in the center of the span. A ceiling joist with drywall applied is allowed to deflect l/240 where l is the length of the span. A floor is only allowed to deflect l/360, so a floor with a 12 ft. span would have a maximum allowable deflection of 0.4" That's easy to measure for a static situation. When you walk on a particular floor, you can induce a dynamic response (e.g., a bounce) which you may find objectionable and others may or may not. It's subjective. At least one manufacturer of wood I-joists conducted empirical studies of various floor assemblies and recorded whether people walking on them found them to be acceptable or not. Interestingly, there were no floor assemblies tested where 100% of people said they were acceptable. Based on their studies, their design software is able to design engineered floor systems which will be deemed acceptable at various levels. While we don't know if the OP's floor is comprised of dimensional lumber, wood I-joists or lightweight steel joists, the designer's task is the same: to meet the code requirements while balancing performance and cost. Take a look at floor structure and see if it's built as designed. If it is and the performance of the floor system is objectionable, go back to the designer and explore options to stiffen the floor.

Yellow Monkey is registered with a 30 bud count but it gets over 40 in Nova Scotia. I have a small clump and it hit 41 buds last year. I have seen it in a large clump with many scapes above 40 buds.

Mike Derrow has some excellent performing dips. All have had heathy foliage,re bloom, great color and great bud counts. I can't wait for Adena Inferno to get hear. Rapidly becoming my favorite to order from. His site is Adena Hems.

Hi Dani,

Here are a just a few of the dips that I grow that I consider GREAT consistent northern performers with wonderful blooms and plant habits as well. (all the ones mentioned are dormant for me too.) Not sure what your budget is (or the form that you're looking for), but except for RFK, all are quite moderate in price.

First up is ROSE F. KENNEDY (Doorakian)...blooms its head off for a LONG time, AMAZING flower, sinfully fertile, great parent and wonderful plant habits to boot!) A MUST HAVE!

SUBSTANTIAL EVIDENCE (Norris) Intriguing bloom, amazing substance, very fertile, blooms a LONG time, and fabulous genetics too.

ORCHID CANOPY (Mahieu) Exquisite open form that just floats in the air....blooms for months!

HEAVENLY WHITE LIGHTNING (Gossard)...won the Stout and well deserved too!

LATE TO THE PARTY (Crichton, B.J.) The color and saturation of this flower is AMAZING! Tall, strong scapes, blooms hold up very well and bloom mid to late for a very long time with great pollen and pod setting too...LOVE IT!

Also, Margo Reed and Jim Murphy have a long list of exceptionally fine daylilies bred for performance and plant habits....a wonderful source!

I'm not sure how to post multiple pics, so I'll just do them separately.

Heavenly Angel Ice was a runner up but it did NOT win the Stout Medal!! However, it is still on the eligible list for this year. I grow almost all of these too and agree they are great performers. I grow a lot of Margo and Jim's dips, Jamie Gossard and Bret Clement both have very good dip lines also, along with Pat Cochenour.

I forgot to mention, I have grown Rose F. Kennedy since ... I can't remember, almost since it came out. I think I got it in 2007 maybe. It does OK but isn't the most vigorous daylily in the garden. It is extremely distinctive and I love the bloom, however.

Edward, good to know about 'Heavenly Angel Ice' not liking to be divided. Bit of a brain freeze about it winning the Stout for me...sure think it deserves it though!.....I will have to check out 'Yellow Monkey'...that branching is awesome!

Now, 'Rose F. Kennedy' has been one of my best consistent performers year in and year out.; dip OR tet! But, I spoke with someone else this year who said it actually didn't thrive for them in their northern garden. Surprised me, because most folks I've spoken with have really liked its garden performance....another Stout contender in my book!

Wow, you guys are awesome! I have HAI, last year it was establishing so I hope to see better this year. It wouldn't take any pollen at all...I notice the spidery ones are harder to cross or me. RFK- I put Emerald Starburst in last year so Ican't wait to see what it can do. I also have a few in my seedling bed tnat I'm watching...I hope they will go crazy this year, you know, now that we have some WATER.
