I started most of my seeds in the recommended peroxide solution and didn't put them in the dirt until they germinated, just b/c I have so little room under the lights/in windowsill that I didn't want to waste it in case they didn't germinate.

My fastest seeds to germinate were almost anything with Egyptian Myth in it.. and

I"m really trying to get a Cimarron Rose cross to germinate and only one of the seeds is sprouting and has been for a while with nothing from the others..and I was really hoping for more..a few crosses with trump card.. and 2 with Soho Style.. being stubborn.we'll See!

I see you got a PRINCESS DIANA cross. I kept debating whether to get that one for this year but will wait a bit more.

I do have DIANE SEVETSON X BUBBLE YUMMIN MAMA (5 seeds)and they just started showing their green today. All 5 germinated in presoak so hopefully they all will show green by next week. I wonder what the kids will look like.

crackingtheconcrete: The cross I did this past season was DARLA ANITA X WILD IRISH. I've got 9 seedlings growing out of 15 seeds I started with. I also presoak my seeds and wait for the radicle to appear before planting in the cups. I did give up on a few of that seed cross and just planted them but they did not show anything. That is okay, I've got enough going that I can see what develops.It was the one cross I really wanted to try for myself.
BROWN WITCH, SOUTH SEAS, MAUNA LOA and ALABAMA JUBILEE were pollinated by bees. I got a surprise when deadheadng the scapes in the fall.

There is nothing like seeing that green pop up through the mix and know that I'm half way through the process.

juliany.. that's cool that you did your own.. I want to do my own this year.I"m really excited.. I was antsy one day so I just started listing crosses of stuff I had that might be cool, but I don't really have a "goal" for what I want, necessarily.

If you get a "Surprise pollination by bees" does that mean they just developed seed pods and you didn't expect them to?

Juliany - last year I planted a cross of HURRICANE SWIRLS X WILD IRISH and it is a really strong grower. I don't know if it is the HURRICANE SWIRLS or WILD IRISH parent that is so strong. I am going to see that cross bloom this year, and I am very excited! My BUBBLE YUMMIN' MAMA cross is probably crossed with CRYSTAL SEA, HOW SWEET IT IS or BALLERINA BEAUTIFUL - I was working with those parents, but the tag blew away! I also have a SOUTH SEAS cross, but I have not germinated it yet. I might have some babies that bloom this year that won't fit my goals... so I might need a place to send them! :o)

crackingtheconcrete, I have a (ROYAL RENIASSANCE x JOHN PEAT) X I WANNA PIRANHA cross from last year, and it is doing very well. It should bloom this year too. I wish I had a little more land, but I guess that means I would have to do a lot more work! :o) I like a lot of blue eyed and watermarked daylilies in the purple, lavender, pink and cream colors which often get overlooked by a lot of folks who like the bright colors. Lots of people tell me I have specific taste and daylilies they have never heard of before! I am not surprised, I am a little weird in the rest of my life, so I expect it to run over into my hobbies! LOL.

Out of curiousity.. what are your goals that your'e looking for in your seedlings? (the blue-eyed/watermarked daylilies in pale colors that you were talking about?)

Quick question: can I plant spouting seeds in a Miracle Gro potting mix ? Will it be light enough for the seeds to push through? (I have way too many seeds and I literally went through 3 bags of germinating mix and am out..)

Yeah... I am trying for watermarks and blue eyes on pink, lavender and cream selfs... I like both bagelly type and UFs, but I like really, really perfect form... meaning, all the petals look like each other (symmetry). I hate it when I get a daylily and one petal is all wacked out. I also have to have a plan(t) with CLEAR colors... no mud. Plus good habits - meaning no crowding of blooms, nice arching foliage, strong scapes and good increasers/growers.

The pottin(g) mix will be too heavy for sprouting. If you go to a garde(n-sorry hate advertising) store, you can make your own seed(ling) mix cheap. Get quality peat moss, vermiculite and perilite. Mix, and voila! Great, light, soil-less seed mix. In fact, most don't even have perilite, so you could skip if for $$ reasons. It just helps more with aeration. Usually all these ingredients come in big bags, and will be a ton cheaper than buying the premixed stuff. Hope this helps!

LOL.. k..I guess no potting mix.. I'm almost embarrassed to ask my husband to take me to get more germinating mix ingredients.. He's really sweet, but the look on his face when he saw all my seed bags was a little..IDK embarrassing. Hahha

YEs, I"m not a fan of muddy colors.. or even muted ones for that matter.. I tried not to get seed crosses where even one of the parents was a color I didn't love, just in case they turned out just like the parent.

Do you personally check out the genetics of the parents of the two plants you're crossing or do you mostly just look at the habits of the two actual plants you are crossing?

fariysoapgirl: I hear that Gaskins plants do really well when using as a cross so fingers crossed.
I also want watermarks as a goal but why do I keep looking at others lol.

crackngtheconcrete: why not pick up a small bag of seed starter at the local big box store.

I'm now finishing up all the crosses, won't do anymore as veggies and other flowers will soon need the germination mat and lights. I think starting those makes me more nervous than doing daylily seeds.

I ran out of lights, so I'm putting things near windows now and hoping they'll be satisfied with that.

Well, I am at 219 seedlings that have sprouted green. I still have a few more waiting to surface but so far, things look good :-).

Spring has sprung and getting alot of yard work done and more fencing up. Last years seedlings are showing green so I guess they made it through the winter. I don't know if I can cull any. I think I've gotten too attached to them.

OOH! 219 is AWESOME!! Yep, I'm not planning on culling any of mine, however the neighborhood and thier disgusting gray monstrosities called buildings are most likely going to do it for me.. they're building a new corner on my block and I thought they were finished with this "thing" that I swear has to be up for "ugliest building ever created".. and I go out.. and notice there is NO sunlight AnYWHERE!! on my daylilies.. because they are adding yet ANOther impossible horrific layer. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!!!!
I am so steamed, I can't even sleep. And now that I'm done ranting..I"m really glad to hear about your seedlings. :)

HI Pat:
Peroxide(3% strength) and water. A mix someone on this forum (I think) gave was was 1 ounce to 2 liters water.
I use small cups- 1 for each cross- and fill with the water mix about 1/4 to 1/2 full and place the seeds in and let them sit on the counter till the radicle shows. Then plant them in 16 oz cups. Be sure to put the cross package under the cup so you remember which is which.

I've also just taken seeds, placed them in a plastic shoebox filled with promix (moistened) to 1/2 inch from the top, put the lid on and left it in a south facing window. Within 10 to 20 days the seeds have sprouted.

There are a couple of old threads on this forum talking about different methods. Just do a search for Seed Starting. Can't find the ones that I saved in My Favorites.
