Poll: what would you pay/LA preferences

I'm thinking about selling seeds on the LA this fall (to make some money to feed my addiction). I'm wondering what types of auctions people bid on- meaning # of seeds, starting price, etc.

I bid on auctions with 5 seeds, but I personally would prefer to have auctions starting with 6 (since one usually never germinates for me). I would like dip auctions to have more seeds since generally they produce more.

For 2 brand new cultivar crosses, I'll bit up to $35-ish. For 1 brand new cultivar and a newer cultivar, I'll bid around $25. For older cultivars I'll bid under $10. Now if these auctions have a nice amount of seeds, I tend to bid more.

I tend to bid on things with great saturated color, high budcount, or northern hardy patterns. I am a sucker for good Klehm crosses, especially with Techny Spider. I tend to like any shapes except for bagels.

Any input would be great!

For me, it depends on the cross. So many crosses make no sense to me, no matter who the parents are. When I buy seeds there, I am buying genetics. It would depend on how badly I wanted the particular seeds. I might go as high as $40, but that would be rarely. Even with an ideal cross, there is no assurance the seedlings will be keepers.

I like 8 seeds in the package the best.

I tend to like crosses with flowers that resemble each other.

The most I have paid so far is $47.50 this spring at a club auction. It was for a double fan of a 2008 intro. 1 fan immediately rotted but the other took off and produced a small increase. It did not bloom yet (planted May 1). I planted it immediately on arrival into a prime garden location. No abuse on this side to account for the rotting. I wouldn't call the hybridizer on the failed fan only because this was a donation to the club auction & what I paid was almost 1/2 of their list price. Besides, part of the plant survived. It better make it through winter though! If I had paid full price I'd have been really disappointed. As it is I'm sort of disappointed. I've had better performance from much less expensive plants. Now all that said, I expect to start paying more as I want to go commercial and that means I need to update my collection with newer releases.

1 and 2 nothing, I dont start dips here. Nothing against them, just not what Im playing around with. 3. In the 8-20 I paid 15 bucks this year for stippled starship X purple cheetah. (one of those I just had to have it crosses) dollar range for 5 seeds. 4. The most Ive ever paid is 25 dollars give or take for 5 seeds. If you keep waiting, you can get alot of newer intros a little cheaper later in the year. Especially when more and more sellers come on. IF you can wait one more year after the intial thrill or say get 09 and a 08 cross together , vs a 09 X 09 cross you can save yourself alot of money that way as well. But Im a sucker sometimes as well. But I see some of these new intros gong for 60 or more dollars, I remember last year when ruby released the hannibal (renamed to silence of the lambs) toothy intro and people went insane! Well over 100 dollars for 5 seeds a few times. Quite frankly, its a nice toothy intro, but I think you can get alot of the same genetics out of bass gibson, I just got a bass gibson x randy stephens cross for 8 bucks. Super wide edges are very expensive at the moment, if you wait another year, you can pick alot of them up for half price once people move on to the next trend. Ive already blown through my set budget for the year =) Yet I have two or three more crosses in for bid at the moment. I keep telling myself this is it! I really want something out of white base! Not sure if you are open to a few suggestions? I am in TX and just finished a house w/a pool. I swim 4-5 times a week. When we first designed our master bedroom/bath, we had a door into the master like you do -- after thinking about dripping wet me walking across the entire bedroom (hardwood floors) to get to the bathroom/shower, we changed the plan to a door directly into the master bath instead, and I'm so glad we did -- I can go from dripping wet in the pool straight into the shower -- I mention this because your bathroom could be tweaked to have a door directly from the patio, or if the patio is at ground level, a few stepping stones to the back side of the bathroom to a door placed to the right of where the tub is? Where will people using the pool go to the bathroom? The floor plan is quite small on the screen, so not sure if I'm missing a second laundry? Is the laundry in the master the only one? If so, I might consider swapping the laundry and closet positions and make access to the laundry from the hallway to the master. I like how the architect has incorporated traditional TX hill country details along with contemporary elements -- I think using stucco vs. siding will further that. I hope you will post progress pictures along the way.

If you were buying a home, would you prefer gas or oil?

My first preferrence is natural gas. But if you do not have a gas line fronting your property, you gotta get something else. Propane is more expensive and where I live, it may require a heater during the coldest time to generate enough pressure to work. Oil is messy, but might be my second choice after gas. Easy access by the delivery truck to the tank during winter should be planned. Consider where the snow piles will be. If the tank is in the basement, there should be safety equipment to prevent overfills and oil spillage. If the tank is outdoors, consider oil flow during the coldest times. At my location, it gets cold enough to congeal the heavier heating oils. An in-ground tank helps, but it should have a moisture content monitor. Nowadays, you have to consider EPA requirements for protecting the environment. A heat pump is practical in warmer climates provided one has a good heat source for the coils. Heat pumps are not useful in northern climes. One advantage: heat pumps can be used for both heating and cooling.

I rarely buy seeds since I make my own, but I have to say that I am the opposite of uroboros ... I wouldn't buy crosses that resemble each other. I don't want to produce daylilies that look like the other 60,000+ that are out there.

I hate to say it, but now that I think about it, I don't even KNOW if I"m buying crosses intelligently in the sense that I'm considering the right factors.
I tend to look at both parents and think "I like BOTH flowers, so if I get ones that look closely like either parent, I'll be okay"
I try to go for winter hardy, lots of blooms, and unique shapes (Huge spider crossed w/ a pattern, or a great, floriferous near white with a funky pattern in a darker color)
I tend to not go above $20ish b/c at that point, I'd rather use it towards a fan or so of a more expensive plant that I can see earlier, even though there's something fun about not knowing quite what you'll get in a seedling.

I only buy when there is something I want to use in a future cross and there would have to be at least 8 or more seeds. Price...well I'm cheap so don't expect me to pay more than $10.00. ;-).

I'm not looking for similar look either. More with experimenting with low bud count crossed to a high bud count, top heavy branching with better branching, crossing different patterns to see what would develop. I love watermarks but haven't seen too much variety in that area either.

Unfortunately most of the dormants/northern hardy daylilies are behind in unique patterns. I see alot of selfs, eyed or watermarks but not alot of interesting patterns. Hopefully I'll have some to use in the next 2 years.

Very interesting! I've bought close colored crosses if I can't afford a certain cultivar (but not very often). I've gotten alot of southern patterns with northern "patterns" crosses this year in hopes of something interesting. I've also tried to buy things that are opposite rich colors in hopes of something equally saturated with different colors. I also agree- I have to to love both parents...if I don't like one, I doubt I'll like them together. I really like things that you look at and go "hhmmmmm, really? Let's see what we get!". I've got Stargate Portal x Terry Lyniger seedlings that should bloom this year that I'm quite intereted in.

I just want to be mindful of what I try to cross...I have such a HUGE list of my own crosses and I only have so much TIME. I try to pay attention to what sells on the auctions for good prices, but I don't want/have some of the top cultivars so I'm hoping that some of my seedlings that bloom this summer can provide something that I can use.

One thing I am confused on is why I don't see more Memorial To Steve crosses. Maybe someone can shed some light on that for me.

I guess it's all a gamble to some extent, huh?

Dani,I was thinking about this yesterday, for some reason, and one thing I really liked on the LA is this one guy who sells different crosses in a "package deal" and call it something like "Signs of Spring Special"
So He'd put up the pics of the main cross and offer 5 or 6 seeds of those, then 3 or 4 seeds of 2 other crosses. That was a lot of fun

B/c I dont' have tons of space,I liked the idea of geting different types of seeds in smaller amounts.

I don't usually pay more than $25-$30. The very expensive ones eventually come down in price and I can wait for them, but sometimes a similar one works for me. I'm not into certain kinds or patterns, and just buy what I like. I do try to find the ratings, if possible. However, some of the Stout Medal winners are no longer my favorites and I've given away some of them and replaced them with some non-winners that I like better. The hybridizers just keep getting better.

I wish I had Tet Peppermint Delight, but I'm not sure how well it'd do for me. I think I have a cross from LA that should be blooming this year with it, though.

Stargate Portal, Sub Evidence, Neon Flamingo and Blackberry Dragon seeds seem to sell. We'll see what I can drag out of them this year!
