I'm planning on using the Capitata yew as a partial screen near our lot line, and cannot figure out what spacing to use when planting. In searching for its size, I've found everything from 10-12' high to 25' high to 30'+. Width has ranged from 3' to 15'. We will be buying plants that are 5-6' tall, and will not be pruning them. They will be in almost full shade for 5 months of the year under oak trees in sandy soil. Since Capitata can also be planted in full sun, I'm wondering if the taller, wider forms are the result of the extra light. I don't want them to have needleless, scrubby-looking lower branches--is that likely if they're planted too close together in shade?
Any insight you can give me to help lay out my landscaping plan would be greatly appreciated.
