my first daylily

for a while now i have been looking for a daylily, for some reason i could not find any at garden stores by my house but today i was at lowes and i found some daylilies, the one i chose was called pumpkin kid they were really cheap "five dollars and mine had 2 fans" but i decided only to get one. i have some questions about daylilies

-what are some ideal growing conditions

-what kind of fertilizer should i get for it

-how often should i water

and any other tips for growing daylilies would be highly appreciated.

My unscientific explanation .... I've had this occur here in south-central Ontario with a few (normally) late bloomers over the years. I believe what is taking place is that a later-than-normal scape is developing during the previous autumn - perhaps even a rebloom scape - and the onset of winter shuts the process down. The development is arrested at that time and it more-or-less goes into 'hibernation' (Dormancy) only to be stimulated into re-growth the next spring, resulting in unusual, uncharacteristic early bloom the following spring.

So exciting to hear that you all grow some of these! I was worried when I was placing my orders :) Wonderful picture, Avedon! Hopefully my South Seas looks that good in a couple of years. Sounds/looks like that ones a good one! Sarah, I'll be sure to plant Roses in Snow on the side of my house just in case its not happy hear neither. I started planting today, but it was too hot and humid. I'm on vacation this week, so I'll slowly get them done over the next few days :) Flowergardener...you're right! I just checked her auctions on The Lily Auction, and those are some GREAT prices! I might snatch up one of the smaller boxes. By the time they arrive, I should have all the ones above planted! Tammy

I would say 1" per week, depending on what kind of wind/heat/cold/rainfall you're getting. I see you are in CA.... (Thanks for sharing that info in the 'First Names, Please' thread.) I'm not sure what kind of weather you get there compared to here in WI. We usually get plenty of rainfall in the Spring and early Summer, and again in late Fall. It's during the hot, windy mid-late-Summer-early-Fall days that I have to give supplemental water.

Just make sure you give your new plants plenty of deep watering until they get established. My plants that have been in the ground for a couple of years can withstand some drought conditions, but they may not bloom as heavily as when they receive plenty of water.
