A really really difficult spot

It's about 10 square feet, a thin layer of gravel over compacted dry clay soil under a bigleaf maple, gets a little sun in the afternoon. A boxwood hedge barely survives on one edge of the plot. Before the gravel was added (not by me)there were only a few sparse weeds. I don't like the gravel, but removing it isn't an option, nor is amending the soil, for complicated reasons. I've wondered if mint or some other invasive plant could sprout and thrive under such conditions -- I'm not too worried about its invasiveness, for there's nowhere to invade since it is surrounded by concrete pavement. Any other suggestions?
