D.A. Rose 'Tea Clipper'

For those that like myself love Austin roses here's one that is hardy to zone 4. I just got an email from one of my favorite sources to shop, I can see my bank account dwindling.

Although they can't ship to the U.S. I'm sure you can find it wherever D.A's are sold. This one is supposed to be quite hardy and almost thornless :o).

Oh, it's stunning! I love the colors and the name is also attractive. A couple of them would fit nicely in a cottage garden, especially my garden *lol*.

Oh my gosh Annette. That one has done something to my spirit. What a beautiful smoky color. I just love it. When I see a rose either physically or from a picture, if it makes me gasp in delight, it's a winner in my humble rose book.

I for one am feeling more cheerful about Texas' drought, as a few months ago much of the state was in D4 Exceptional Drought (as were parts of New Mexico and Louisiana). Try clicking on the "12 week animation" below the large map and watch the slow transformation starting with November 8, 2011. We had 3" of rain this week, and north Texas had even more, so I am sure that next week's update on the map will be even more encouraging.

Linrose, I don't know from where you got your (blanket) info on Austins, but the many I've been growing so far are certainly neither divas nor stingy with their blooms nor any less healthy than most other modern roses. Most of them are certainly a lot healthier, more vigorous and floriferous than many HT's, making fantastic garden plants. On the three you asked about: Lady Emma is a continuous bloomer with superb citrus-fruity scent similar to Jude the Obscure's, but a bit sweeter and more complex, absolutely delicious. Well behaved and wide growing, and in our temperate English climate practically evergreen (or ever-bronze, given the lovely color of its foliage). Catches some BS without spray but does not defoliate, and just keeps blooming and blooming. Quite amazing. This rose is a must for its beauty, scent and performance. My Tea Clipper is entering its third season. Its repeat was not great in its first year, but improved noticeably in its second. The blooms are very beautiful when they first open, but they fade teribly fast, within a day or two, into a wishy-washy color, ending up a very light, washed-out yellow-beige with floppy petals. That has been disappointing. Scent is tea. The plant is enormously vigorous with few thorns and quite healthy, even in my no-spray garden. Teasing Georgia - exquisitly beautiful and very healthy with an overwhelming display of flowers in the spring and early summer. Repeat in its first year is not so good, but will improve very noticeably every year. Lovely sweet tea scent. A superb, classic rose. Some more Austins I can recommend for performance: William Shakespeare 2000 Molineux Golden Celebration Sharifa Asma Heritage Abe Darby Crocus Rose Fair Bianca Prospero Lady of Megginch Radio Times Pat Austin Claire Austin Christopher Marlowe Jubilee Celebration The Ingenious Mr. Fairchild Sophy's Rose (not much scent) The Dark Lady (BS susceptible but superb bloomer) The Prince (a smallish plant but a good bloomer) The Herbalist Portmeirion A Shropshire Lad Ann Boleyn (flowers blow fast though) Jude the Obscure is also a good, reliable bloomer (albeit not a bloom machine) with fantastic scent and good health. In my experience, Austins tend to perform better when grafted. DA in Tyler TX sells the biggets, best quality plants. Hope this helps, Andrea

I haven't grown this one, but based on the other Austins I do grow, I'd be inclined for the spring pruning only to follow the general practice of trimming it back by about 1/3 (or even a bit less)--plus taking out any dead branches--feed and water it well, and let it take off and hopefully do its thing for the rest of the season. It is not that unusual for a first-year Austin to bloom very little--nor is it unusual for an Austin to grow about 4x3. I suspect it will do better its 2nd and 3rd year. I'm assuming it is getting plenty of sun--at least 6 hours. If it is in too much shade, that will certainly stop it from blooming very profusely. If it gets quite hot in your region, dont' forget to water it. Austin's sometimes need a bit extra water to bloom well. As for pegging, unless this Austin's starts developing outrageous jolly green giant arms (evidently that is a problem in places like California), I wouldn't bother with it. I tried it once with Gertrude--lot of work for very little result, in my opinion. I think maturity plus food and water (and sufficient sun) will do wonders this year--and we'd like to see photos of it blooming! : ) Kate

Tangles, I grew Tea Clipper and found its blooms to be stunning, individual works of art! But as Hoovb and Buford noted, TC is not the most floriferous of roses. I somehow managed to coax a few more blooms than one flush plus scattered, so I suspect Hoovb is right about the winter chill. TC is a unique rose with full, ruffled blossoms that are more golden than Abe Darby, which you might also really enjoy. Do you grow him? TC's blooms are similar to Paul Barden's Marianne, although M's are a bit fuller and the plant itself is finer of health and habit in my NW US garden. M is once-blooming and a sight to behold in early summer! Her fragrance is indescribably delicious, as is Abe Darby's...but I digress. I would take Ingrid's point 100% to heart when growing Austins. Give them at least 5 years to show their talents. Nearly every one, own root or grafted, requires a few year's patience to become something resembling the catalog photos. Munstead Wood's bloom character and cycles are the exception to this rule. MW takes a while to build into a nice shrub, but it blooms early and often, even in infancy! Tea Clipper is not quick out of the starting gate and requires more nurturing. I like Tea Clipper. Its blooms are gorgeous, and if I had kept it, I would have grown it with lavender clematis and hardy geraniums to fill the gaps in the bloom cycles. My TC, when fairly mature, produced two flushes, spring and fall, with scattered blossoms in between. Rather like Buff Beauty which I still grow in my garden. I had some success with pegging TC's longer canes. TC will break into bloom along the arches. Prompt deadheading also helps with remontancy and a little trim after bloom is useful, too. Just FYI, I dug up TC to pass it along. I tend to experiment with several similar varieties and then keep the ones I love best. The rest I give to friends. The fact that I passed along TC means I gave it my approval but preferred to grow other apricots for various reasons. In another garden in anther climate, I might have kept TC. Aside: I am absolutely fascinated by sailing ships and I drink tea by the gallon, so the name Tea Clipper caught my interest. I am thrilled by the notion of harnessing the power of the wind and traveling the globe with nothing but oceans for highways and tea (and a few roses) in my cargo hold! Carol

When my catalog arrived from D.A. I buried it under a pile of magazines, hoping I'd forget about it! Now I've dragged it out and I'll never get anything accomplished this morning! LOL! Tea Clipper is lovely AND, according to my catalog is a rebloomer! So she's a must-have for sure. Thanks!

A word of caution. She is not on the cold hardy list in the catalog, nor at the website, probably because she's a new one. But you might want to double check on her hardiness before buying.

Below is the link to the climate info for zones 4-5 and also zones 9-10 in case anyone would like to be tempted to add others to their collections!

Hmmmmm if I squint just right and read between the lines.....I think I can see a well protected area in zone 2? I wonder, I wonder.......

Hmmm, I wonder if this would work, I know some people in colder areas actually bury some of their rose standards. Dig a trench, dig down one side of the rose, loosen the roots on that side, bend and lower the bush into the trench, bury and mulch. When danger of frost has passed, uncover, lift and plant in place. Maybe experiment with one, my motto nothing ventured nothing gained.

Ooohh ya, I have heard of that method of overwintering. That would probably work if I only had one. I will have to see if they are available here in the spring as I am finished my ordering for this year.

I love Tea Clipper too! I saw it a few months ago online. I especially adore Mr. Austin's peach roses and yellow roses! I have his 'Carding Mill' rose, and its beautiful. I hope I can find room for this one!
