Any flowers for hot, dry situations?

hot means 40 deg celsius, and also very dry.

spotted or marbled foliges will also be appreciated.

Check www.desert-tropicals.com for ideas.

They list things that do well in Phoenix, which is quite similar to Pakistan's climate.

Purple coneflower, rudbeckia (goldsterm), and phlox. Last but not least, daylillies of course.

This is just personal experience, although I seem to recall others reporting the same thing. When a young squash is only starting to produce females, it is still quite frail to produce viable fruit. If your largest leaves are only about 6" long, the plant is too young to support the fruit even if the weather is right and you have both male and female flowers. It's as though the plant hasn't had its first period and so it can't get preggers even if there has been major reproductive action (like yellow and black striped bees or buff-coloured bees). My first half dozen females all aborted. The flowers dried out, dropped and the baby zuke shriveled up and rotted. I, too, was alarmed by this the first time, but so far, this has been my experience with all four zukes I've had, and they all ended up producing. The information on plants not being able to support multiple fruit is valuable. I think zukes often start out looking like there is a production problem when there really isn't. It's one of those plants that takes a little patience. It's good to ask questions, but if you have squash that isn't behaving as you expected, it is best to give it some time. As long as the squash doesn't have any funky symptoms, like discoloration of leaves, spots and blotches or funky weird bugs on leaves or close to the main stem near the ground, patience is usually the best medicine.

Hi Gardnerme, Here's what produced best for me last year, and I planted late (May 1), we had weeks of 90-100+ temps starting in June, and my plants were against a solid (heat-trapping) privacy fence: Black Prince (smallish, but wildly prolific, almost to the point of being a nuisance) Earl's Faux (Enormous pink beefsteak w/Potato leaf) Sugold cherries (these were right against the fence, being the hottest and full-sun part of my garden) Everything else I planted was OK, but not super-high yield until the heat subsided. I did not, however, have a lot of blossom drop. I foliar fed religiously with Foxfarm's "tiger bloom"(2-8-4) once the plants started blossoming, alternating with aspirin water. This was the first time I ever did a foliar feed. I don't have anything to do with FF, and it didn't come recommended from anyone, I just thought I'd try it. All I know is that I had other friends with severe blossom drop last year, and I didn't. I also got some cheap ($0.50/yd) white gauzy cloth from W-Mrt to shade/reflect heat, which I attached to CRW cages with binder clips. I left it on all season once the heat cranked up, and I didn't have trouble with sunscald. Some swear by proper "shade cloth," but what I found in my local stores was dark in color (heat attracting) and VERY expensive. IMHO, potato leaf varieties seemed to do better in my garden, as they tended to provide more of their own shade. Hope this helps! Cheeers, PBL

Here in No Cal no one is complaining about the heat, even though it has been in the 90s and 100s F, and humidity mostly 15-20%. What folks are complaining about is the smoke & fires. Our "fire season" usually is in Oct, but this year it started in July. Hundreds of thousands of acres burning, dozens of serious fires, just in the Northern half of the state. Firefighters are here from all over the US. We were just at our cabin up in the mountains West of Redding, and there are so many large fires (total acreage is over 150,000 and counting) in just that one remote county (Trinity county) that they have stopped calling them by name, and are calling them by 4 different "complexes". They usually give each fire a name, but the fires have been merging, so no longer using the names. 3,000+ fire fighters, who are just trying to get lines around the fires - do not have the ability to put them out, but trying to keep them away from the little towns. Over 4 dozen houses burned so far. When a successful fire break is 100% all around a fire, they call it "contained". In one of the larger complex of fires, the "estimated containment date" is Oct 1! And that is just in one county. Nearer the SF Bay Area there are numerous small fires, and two big ones which have been burning for 3-4 weeks, and have also burned over 45 houses and 130,000 acres. The smoke travels 100s of miles in the mountains - our cabin is way far away from the big fires, but none the less when we left yesterday, you could hardly see the trees right across the creek from our cabin - I was glad we were going home. The Red Cross has set up "clean air" shelters, in schools and senior centers, etc, with HEPA filters on the buildings, to filter out the smoke. Very scary. Nik, I know this sort of thing has happened in Greece before, so you know what I am talking about - when Mediterranean climates get winter droughts on top of our normal hot & dry summers, the native vegetation (which is drought tolerant because full of natural resins ) just explodes. So, we all are sincerely hoping that we will get an actual winter this year, for the first time in 3 years. Is this a valid concern? Enough to either switch to standard pots instead, or increase the ratio of calcined products even further? I'd say it's a valid concern, given the evaporative surface is probably in the neighborhood of trebled. I can't tell you what to do because it sort of depends on how much you're willing to water. I suppose it you're willing to water daily if that's necessary, a try at upping the water retention with the added water-retaining products is a good bet. Regardless of what you try- why not also try at least one variant container type with a regular mix (if you use 1 pot) or a super soaker mix if you use the fabric bags. - And just out of curiosity, if the unscreened Turface/DE doesn't affect aeration why do you (seemingly) prefer perlite? Cost- or weight-related? I use perlite because I don't want or need the additional water retention afforded by products like Turface or calcined DE. I don't particularly like to water, but my plants appreciate me making soils that require frequent watering. I have at least 200 containers, so I have to make the watering rounds daily (unless it rains) anyway, because I have so many bonsai pots that have 1/2 cup of soil or less. Some plants only need watering every 5 days or so (like pines & junipers), but the little guys demand close attention. That's not the soil's fault - it's related almost entirely to my choices that limit soil volume. Should I water based on the volume of the media with 5-1-1, or should I water based on the size of the plant? Both of those considerations are part of what you use to decide when to water. A well made 5:1:1 is quite forgiving when it comes to the potential for over-watering, so common sense usually carries the day. After a planting is established, you might wait for a weekend when you know you can watch a plant carefully. Water on Wednesday or Thursday, then watch carefully for the first sign of wilt to give you a better idea of where the limits are. It won't take long before you'll be factoring light levels, wind, humidity ..... as a matter of course into your determination of when to water - it'll become almost reflexive. I hardly even think about what I'm doing as I water - usually thinking about something else. If you're in doubt about whether or not the plant will be ok until your next opportunity to water ..... you can usually water w/o ill effects because of the nature of the soil you're using. - Would you recommend the seedlings in an intermediate pot before they go into their final 15gal homes? Personally, I wouldn't bother, but I WOULD be mindful of making sure I keep the soil moist where I think the roots are. IOW, if all the roots are in the top 3" of soil, you better water so the top 3" is moist enough to satisfy water demands. As noted, if you run into this issue at transplant time, you can set the fabric bags on the ground (to take advantage of the earth's wicking action, or set things up so an actual wick is keeping the lower part of the container from staying soggy - say if you have to water daily immediately after transplanting. Don't worry about asking questions. That's what drives the forums. If I can't answer, there are a lot of smart folk here who can help. Once I'm a part of as thread I usually follow it until it fades away, so if you're getting replies from others (say on this thread) and I seem to have gone missing, it's just that I agree with what's being said & there's no need for me to add anything to 'their' able advice. If I think you're not getting good info, I usually offer some sort of input that will make whoever's following the thread view what was said in a light that shows it might not hold up to more than casual scrutiny. With the number of messages I get from people who actually make a point of saying they are totally confused by conflicting information, it's probably as GOOD thing for everyone if we make it more of a point to hold each other's feet to the fire so people can rely on what's being presented as good advice. no dirt, no garden center, no wilderness to raid for local specimens...and, I'm sure, a postal system that was set up by the British Raj a hundred years ago? boy, you DID set yourself a challenge. My experience with desert-scaping is minimal, but agaves come to mind, and sedums, and yuccas-and the 'california poppy' which is used to drought and deluge cycles...you might be able to find seeds in the trading forum (or heck, I'll send you some myself) and the advantage of 'no plants' is 'no pests'...so no need for modern sprays...if you haven't started a compost pile, you might want to think about it, since that may be your only source of compost...most of the plants that COULD survive are native to rotten climates, and don't need much fertilizer.

lantana and lavendar do great in hot areas. Need water to get established but then are very drought tolerant.

Also have rockrose, yellow broom doing well.

oleanders are pretty tough. There are also dwarf varieties butI have only seen them in the salmon pink shade.

oh yeah ... oleanders take anything. They're planted all over the highways here. Yarrow also takes the heat and is drought tolerant.

And come to think of it, so is Agapanthus. I had some that were seriously neglected. They did fine, and bloomed when I remembered to water.

I have an air-conditioning unit. I am wondering if anyone has suggestions on what I can plant around the unit. It blows out hot air. The plants I planted near it last summer were wilted. Bushes, grasses, and plants are all fine.

Do you know about diosma (coleonema). It's a Sth African bush of 1 to 2 metres with a spicy perfume and small white pink or red flowers.

It was too popular for its own good in Australia. Because it was so hardy a decade ago every 2nd petrol station had the compulsory row of it out the front. As a result the plant style police cast it aside.

Bad move. It's great for hot dry areas.

Wow - you must be a very dedicated gardener, and very patient! Agastaches, Penstemon, and Salvia are plants that come to mind. They love dry and hot weather. Lupines, I think, would do well, too, and come in a variety of colors. All of the plants I've listed are very easy to grow from seed so you might want to see if places like Thompson & Morgan or Chiltern's will deliver to your area. Depending on how cold your winters get, you could have a great cactus garden, too. Try searching for plants that grow in Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico, and check out www.highcountrygardens.com - they specialize in xeric plants.

If you like, e-mail me and I'll save you some seed this summer. I can't guarantee they'll get there with our current political climate, but it's worth a try.

The mini oleanders also comes in a dk. red, white, and pale pink. Turner's Gardenland in Corpus Christi, Tx. breed these little charmers and they are wonderful once the get established. Very little water to keep em going. We also use Moss Rose here. Will spread like a major ground cover with no water! Good luck on your garden

Lots of CA natives love hot and dry...CA fuchsia (Epilobium), Ceanothus, Romneya, Eriogonum (ornamental buckwheats..my favorite is E. umbellatum var. sulphureus), Penstemon heterophylla, manzanitas.

You might also like to try Gazania, Arctotis or some of the perennial Centaurea. I find they do well in my garden with no water other than our minimal rainfall and they easily survived the 46 degree C day we had last summer.

Cosmos, lantana, moss roses and or/pursulane immediately come to mind. These can all be started from seed, will bloom abundantly and consistently, tolerate less than optimal soil conditions, and require little water once established.

The lantana can will definitely overwinter in your area well, coming back year after year with the proper care.

The cosmos will self sow like crazy and produce tons of seeds you can save.

The moss rose and pursulane seeds can also be collected and saved.

I'm not a big fan of just foliage myself, so no specific recommendations there.
