A few snapshots of my garden last summer

It got cold here again after a few days of 65 degrees! So I thought I'd share some warm weather pictures. I didn't get as many good shots last year. Looking forward to this coming year, though, because I just got a new camera with some cool special effects. Anyway, hope you enjoy as much as I have enjoyed looking at everyone else's beautiful photos. :-)

I planted this catmint only the previous autumn. It was gorgeous, but even in one year got enormous! Had to spread them out at the end of the season.

"SIX DEER AND A SQUIRREL" This was early, early spring. Keep in mind... I live in a city! My house must be on the tourist brochure.

Okay... I did not know those grasses were going to get SOOO BIG! (They were on clearance and didn't have any tags. Going to redo this area this spring. Getting too crazy out there and hiding my cute little house.

Every year when my mom comes to visit for a couple weeks, we take on a new project. This was this year's project!

Beautiful! And blue hydrangeas! Can see why you have a fence, though.

Wonderfully pretty. And cute house is right. The photo of the deer and squirrel is something, right in your back yard! The woodsy scene beyond is very nice.

I enjoy all your great comments! THANKS so much for taking the time to let me know you enjoyed my photos. Cindy, I have trees everywhere! In fact, the only spots in my yard in full-sun are the long borders by the road. Every place else my flowers compete with the shade from trees. I don't have the money or means to have so many trees taken down since my 1 acre lot was all woodland at one point and there are still many huge trees about. Obviously it would be ideal to have more sun but surprisingly my flowers do exceptionally well with dappled shade most of the day and about 3-4 hrs. of full sun. Rena, your comments had me giggling. I am so happy I don't have to deal with snakes here. I have only seen one snake in the past few years and it was just a harmless garter snake. But it was enough to make me jump! When I lived in south Georgia as a kid I remember always freaking out with all the poisonous snakes everywhere....so glad we don't have those kinds here. Avedon, So great to hear from you!! I always enjoy chatting with you here. I am going to get even busier than I already am. My second grandson was just born and now my oldest daughter is pregnant & due in early June. She lives with us (unexpected pregnancy and she will be a single mom) which means more baby duty than ever! So with Mom and 3 grandbabies to look after I hope I have time for all my gardens...(and my housework). Jean, you know I will post more for you from my photo vault because you are always so appreciative! I took so many photos last summer but didn't have the time to post all of them. I don't know if I can keep up with posting this summer what with the 3 grandbabies and my Mom to take care of, so I'm trying to put up as many photos as I can now. Winter is such a long & dreary season, especially up here in the north and I won't have roses til June or daylilies until July. Photos help beat the blues we all have this time of year. Thanks! Those are Pink Cadillac impatiens. I thought they would look nice with my blue hostas. The hostas are looking really 'ratty' because of the high winds we've been having so I left them out. The impatiens have done really well for me.

Wetsuitor: The only ones I dug up this year were 4 washies and a sago palm, each of which would take considerable protection here including heat. I will be leaving those in when they get 2 big to handle, but the washies seem to take root distubance very well and overwinter well indoors. There is of course some set back and it is slow to get growing in the spring, however I'm not ready to get into an elaborate heating system yet. I'm trying to work out my kinks this year on a trachy. Plus my wife would kill me if I had Jim's setup! I live in maybe the coldest winter 6a in America. This will be my 3rd winter here, the lowest low each of the past 2 years is -2, and -8F, HOWEVER, it is the norm to go 3 weeks at a time never getting above freezing. Last December and January, we had 9 days that got above freezing during the day, and most of those were in the 33-38F range for highs. We also had 2 3-weeks seesions of consecutive below freezing weather. The other problem is that I generally don't see grass from Dec.1 to mid-March, it never gets warm enough to ever melt the snow. Last year I lost 2 decent sized trachies and a sabal palmetto, and my minors and needle that survived received considerable damage, the minors burned 98%, the only things left were the emerging spears. Needle had spear pull with surving pups. That was with frost cloth wrapped unheated leaf cages, which provided 0-30% damage and no losses the year before.

Hi Rosana, Thank you for the compliment. Yes, the vinca vine is the variegated kind. They sell it at both Keil Brothers and Garden World. My EE's are another story. Originally they were planted in the back section of my yard. When they had about 3 big leaves on them I dug up the whole bulb (which was a mass of roots at that point) and moved it to the location in the photo above (the photo with the basket above it). The reason I did this was because a neighbor of mine has "almost" this same species and his comes back every year. It's close to the foundation, the soil never freezes in the winter. It's like a different zone. When the leaves died back late last October, I just trimmed off the leaf stalks, covered it thickly with pine needles. As mentioned, it survived. Late March I noticed 2 little nubs popping the surface and as of today I have leaves on both. The EE's in the top photo (by my back door) show no signs of any growth yet. I doubt they survived.

Wow! I love your gardens and your garden art. I live in town, but my lot backs up against a wooded ravine. Deer visit here, too. One shouldered down a shrub to make his way in. They're pretty, though, and otherwise haven't done much damage.

Lovely gardens! The deer and squirrel look right at home (LOL) Your bleeding heart and hydrangea are just beautiful.

How fun that you and your mom do a project every year. My mom and I do that, too :)

You've got lots of butterfly favorites. Do you get much butterfly activity? I love your monarda patch by the "squirrel feeder". Your path looks great, too. I like mulch paths because they're not permanent. If you ever change your mind, you can do something else easily.

Oh, yes. Many butterflies and two competative hummingbirds! That was the first year for the mondara. I think I'm addicted to them now! :-) Wish they lasted the whole summer. I think I was supposed to cut them down right after flowering so maybe this year they'll bloom twice.

It's so nice to see these pictures on a day like today ! Your monarda combo is so pretty. I'm going to keep that in mind when we can finally buy plants again. I think your pic of the arch with the pathway is just perfect! And it's awesome to see your overall view , sometimes it's hard to picture a whole garden piece by piece. So lovely!

L.O.V.E.L.Y. I am soooo envious of that lovely statue you have in your perennial border! And your Astilbe is HUGE. Mine never is as nice as yours.
These pics get me in the mood for spring and planting time! Thanks for pics.

Yes, that is a crazy astilbe. I have a lot of them, but that one gets higher than the rest.

CMK - that statue came from Gabriel Bros. (discount store, if you don't know... kind of junky) I paid $40 for it! Keep wishing I could find another like it.

When I was growing up, our neighbor's name was Hedwig.
Boy do I covet your blue hydrangeas. Not the deer though.
I had a love / hate relationship with deer at my former home.
They are around here, as I see them in the greenbelt.

Yes, a really cute house.

Ahhh, Eye Candy!!! Thank You!!! I have been pouting for days as we just got some more snow...grrr! I have so many plans for my yard, but I am a horrible winter wimp!ha! I hope to one day be looking at a wonderful yard like yours!!!
