saving a huge jade with a broken trunk?

hello,

can anyone offer advice on salvaging a huge jade plant that was broken off at ground level. the trunk is approximately 12" around.

Justin put the broken piece in pot or just lay it on a bench, and give it plenty of air circulation, when you see roots replant it. The bigger the trunk the longer it may take, it needs to heal or put in the smallest pot it can fit into with dry mix, wait six week or more until it is rooted down then water. Don't water unless you know that roots have formed. Justin trim off some of the top growing tips of branches when you do this. Don't toss out the old trunk leave it alone it may come up with new growth as well unless it is rotted. Don't water it either. Norma

In general the cut should dry 1wk for every inch of diameter. So your looking at 12wks minimum, at this time of year longer. I did this with a 4in diameter Tylecodon and it took 8wks to completely callus and another 4 till I saw roots.

Randy, That Norma is a sharer, isn't she!?! This particular plant is the one left after I had removed 4 others like it (but smaller) to make room for more plants that weren't Crassula ovata. Yes, a number of cuttings of this plant (The Great Wall of Jade, Where Kitties Lurk) had gone out to various parts of the States over the years. But getting back to the four others that gave up their spaces so that other plants may live, I remember removing them in February, when they were all watered up from the winter rains. The dumpster was groaning under the wait of hundreds of kilos of the four chopped up plants, I tell ya. The one pictured was about 8' tall at the time of the pic (likely in March, because the brown patches are spent flowers) and got no sun in the winter (the wall behind that prevented it). Yet, almost on schedule, you'd have flowers on Christmas Day.

What ever I use in the house for moulds, I use on my plants, Clorox, Purex, Windex. Spray them. Wait 5 minutes, and rinse. Make sure there is air movement around them, and get them out of peat moss, make sure they dry out between waterings, the bottom leaves may wrinkle, that will be your clue, to water again. This time of the year may be humid for you, if so cut down on watering. Make sure there is fast draiing soil, what color is your mold? Black mold, yellow mold, white mold? I have never had mold on my 'Jade' however I get it at the bottom of the apple trees, big time, they are next to a cement fence. This I would expect in the Eastern States, but now in our South West States. When you water make sure the root ball is also receiving it's share.

I broke a limb on my Ponderosa lemon last autumn when I was putting it in the greenhouse. It was hanging on by just a little wood where it split from the trunk. It was a clean split, not any splinters. It had heavy, large lemons on it. I sprinkled a drop or two of SuperThrive on the wound. I pulled it back into place, and tightly wrapped it with black plastic electrical tape. That limb never wilted, the fruit ripened and that same limb has huge lemons on it right now. I think you did everything right, so far. Now I would feed the plant some SuperThrive to stimulate growth and some blue liquid fertilizer at 1/2 strength. Keep it out of the wind so the splinted limb won't wiggle. Good luck and let me know what happens. - Terry

Maybe I'm missing something. I assume the broken stem was located at #1. If this assumption is correct, the area should callous as long as it stays dry with no other treatment necessary. My concern is the area of #2. It "appears" to be a rather deep split in the trunk of the plant. If this assumption is correct, my concern would be for: A) Stability of anything above and B) Viability. Only time will tell.

I'm a big fan of applying ground cinnamon to the open cut. It seems to help make it callus faster, and the anti-fungal properties of cinnamon may prevent some nasties from taking hold.

Just to repeat the excellent advice from above:
1) Let the cut dry completely before potting
2) Pot into dry, fast draining soil
3) Don't even think about watering until you are sure it has roots (lots of new leaves is a good indication)
4) Take some picture and share with us! ;-)

Hi,

I’ve just snapped mine 1 inch into ground level trying to move it around. It is still standing on the top of the broken trunk. should I just leave it? it is quite large.
