One of my favorite conifer species, the glowing almost white-blue foliage really lights up the landscape.

Abies concolor 'Archer's Dwarf'. One of my top 10 conifers, a very dense, relatively narrow cone. 10+ year old specimens are stunning.

'Wattezii' or 'Wattezii Prostrate'. Does tend to grow a bit upwards in time but generally spreads laterally.

'Candican's. Often consider to be the 'bluest' a conifer can be. That's debatable, but there's no debating the beauty of this large, upright conifer.

'Compacta'. Many dwarves exist, and are worthy of a spot in the garden.

'Conica'. A relatively narrow upright. Seems to grow pretty quickly in my setting.

'Kinky'. Reputed to have twisting, bending leaders and side branches.

Absolutely Dax, I've got to beat them back with a stick.

They come over and are like, look how BIG that Picea orientalis 'Nutans' is! Is it always crooked??

If only I could find a profession that women like!

Some more white firs, even if I am ashamed to show some of my diseased fellas, sad as they are. Bob Fincham has offered a solution in a Spring application of horticultural oil. I'll be trying this desperately next Spring as Abies concolor cultivars are one of the more beautiful small conifers. I've only lost one specimen, Abies concolor 'Wattezii Prostrate' which had fits with the scale and might have originated with the disease. Abies concolor 'Gable's Weeping'. A slow growing semi-weeper. Forms a weepy mound of about 3'x2' in ten years. Not as badly inflicted with my scale problems, I am very hopeful to keep this plant for a long time. Coenosium Garden purchase. 'Archer's Dwarf'. Easily one of my top 25 favorite conifers, you just have to see a 10-15 year old specimen to really appreciate how outstanding this small tree really is. Some scale issues, but surviving. 'La Veta'. Strangely, it seems the smaller my plants the less likely they have been affected by my scale issue. 'Glenmore'. A very nice color, intermediate upright. 'Scooter'. Making it so far. 'Bryce Canyon'. Hesitant to pick up more cultivars until I sort out my problem, I had to snag this from Coenosium Gardens offerings this Spring. -Will

Thanks for adding to the gallery guys. Seems a bit strange for me to keep posting to myself! :) Thanks for the compliments too, hearing it from conifer legends always makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside. More more and more! This is madness!... Picea abies 'Suncrest'. New to me, a nice tight, bluish color miniature, bought at Coenosium Gardens. 'Gold Dust'. An unusually 'leggy' small dwarf with highly unusual colors as the new foliage eventually becomes more golden and mixes well with the older blue/green. 'Perry's Gold'. Pretty bright! New growth eventually reverts to a more dark green. This specimen is in almost full shade. Awesome! 'Vermont Gold' A sport from 'Repens' I believe, grows laterally into a wide shrub, new growth is delicately gold and burns in full sun here. 'Clanbrassiliana Stricta'. A bit more of a cone shaped dwarf. 'Nidiformis'. Common, available at many box stores and in my opinion, still a pretty nice plant. 'Hasin'. Doing some wierd things, I'd better take a look and prune back that barberry! Usually a super-tight miniature similar to 'Dumpy'. 'Malena'. A great looking small dwarf with unusual needle shape, mine received too much sun last year, suffered some damage and this Winter found a new home. 'Aarburg'. A twisting, weeping, chaotic 'Dr. Suess' tree. Saw it for the first time at Coenosium Gardens and had to have one. Eventually gets pretty wide(not too tall), but I think it will be happy enough here in 5-6 hours of sun. Picea abies seems to handle part shade very well. Many of mine are in filtered sun with 3-4 hours of direct sun. 'Gold Drift'. Only one of the best, a strongly weeping, fast growing tree essential to any conifer collection. Hi ClÃ©ment. You're right, this definitely isn't a mini.I'd really like to see a pic of 'Glacier'. I got this from Rich's Foxwillow Pines and it said it was a conical dwarf. I saw a nice specimen plant of it a couple years before that was about 5 feet tall (1.52m) appearing to be a dwarf with faster growth than 'Glauca Compacta' with longer more silver needles, as opposed to the more powder blue of 'GC'. I tried to research it, but all that comes up is 'Glacier Blue' with no description. This is part of what really frustrates me about conifers. With hostas you name it, register it with a description and if someone else tries to call something the same thing, it doesn't happen or if there is a question about tag corruption somewhere along the line you can check. With conifers nomenclature debates are pretty much an every day occurance. Guess it's just what we have to go through, if we want to have these cool plants in our garden :) Have a great weekend, Dan

Will, right on as usual. Blurry photos, schmurrry photos. I still see the plant. Stake up that Pendula. Looks like Pendula to me, as well. Save that second branch (always) until winter. It can be assumed Edwin would have said the same thing, too, being that he's a nurseryman. The wood will always be used, then, it's likely someone here on this forum becomes a recipient.... "We" do extreme gardening on the Conifers Forum. No little root divisions or none of that - athletes who broom & climb to amazing heights - and graft and send plants to those whom ask, or are already in circles. I think I have about 20 people whom I'm sending grafts to this year. Amazing. Thanks chief. Dax

Hi Will. I always thought that being a firefighter was the next best thing to being Batman himself. Not sure how he did with women though...they need some attention too!!!( In my experience,anyway!)

I'll eventually get around to my specimen of 'Wintergold' but I can tell you this, it looks DRAMATICALLY different. It still holds strong gold hues on older growth and mixes wildly with the new growth.

For now a few more cultivars:

Abies concolor 'Scooter'. Looks like a pretty compact dwarf. 3-4 years old.

'Pigglemee'. A very small dwarf/miniature, great color.

'La Veta'. One of my favorites, a small, low mounding dwarf with beautiful colors. 4-5 years old.

Nice again Will, I can't wait for that photo cd to come!

Some name corrections:
'Wattezii' isn't the same variety as 'Wattezii Prostrate'.
The first one is an upright grower with creamy needles in spring.
The second one is a side graft taken from the first one but I never saw the creamy new growth on it, strange...probably it's a side graft from 'Violacea'.

'Candican's must be writte as 'Candicans'

'Pigglemee' must be written as 'Piggelmee'.
It's found as a witches'broom on a 'Candicans' by the Draijer Nursery from Holland in 1971.

Hi firefightergardener,

Do you have a picture about the DRAMATICALLY different 'Wintergold'? I'd like to see that. Actually I had seen some very different cultivars with the same name.
My plant looked like a disaster 4 years ago when I bought it. I planted out in march, full sun. It burned on the first week... I was very disappointed, but I left it there, didn't care about it. Right now it is getting in better shape.

Your 'Wintergold' photo is taken in spring and then the new foliage is a light greenish while in Autumn and winter the colour is a stunning golden yellow.
This could be the explenation to your quiestion...

'hugh' must be written as hug. It means to affectionately squeeze.

Bumped with another cultivar.

Abies concolor 'Hidden Lakes'. A nice very small dwarf. The needles are about 1/2 the normal size.

Thanks for more Will. 'Hidden Lakes' or 'HLG WB' is now 'Hosta La Vista'. From what I understand the broom was found on a tree overlooking a hosta bed at Hidden Lakes.

Does this help? If not I wrote my own, how to:
Join photobucket.com (it's free) - create a folder - select upload photos (several "formats" such as multiple or new uploader or old uploader, etc-) - transfer your photos from the name of the folder you created in your "My Documents" - "My Pictures" - and then select, upload. . .Now your photos are on photobucket. Left & Right click your mouse on the third string of characters, "line" underneath each photograph, select "copy" and then > add that string of characters here in the Message Box (that we all type in). And wham, you click on the blue box called, "Preview Message" - and you'll see your photo - along with any text you may have typed.

Hello, if anyone is still posting here...
'Charming Chub' Abies concolor seems like what I want, based on SOFT needles and SMALL ultimate UPRIGHT growth.
But some of the others look very nice to me, too.
Would Archer's Dwarf, Lativa, Rochester Park, Wattezi, Mike Stern, etc. be good choices for me? And where do I buy them? Thanks, Jeannette

Porterhowse Farms has a nice selection of Abies concolor dwarfs. High Country Gardens carries Charming Chub, although they are currently out of stock.
