Dahlia stems

Although I am about to dig up my dahlias for winter storage I have an ongoing concern about the strngth of the stems holding the flowers. The stems are just not strong enopugh to hold the flowers reasonably erect.

What can I do to stengthen the stems?

When you replant in the spring and the sprouts start coming up, pinch off all but the largest sprout. When that single
spout is 12-18 inches tall, pinch off the center candle. This will cause the plant to be thicker, bushier, and have
thicker stems. You will have a 3-4 feet tall plant instead of
5-7 feet with thin stems.

some cultivars are more floppy than others, perhaps you need to get some with stronger stems.
Are all your plants wobbly, do they get full sun? And feeding too heavily has this effect.

Most of the larger (taller) dahlias will all develop hollow stalks/branches. You've done nothing wrong and a lot right, from the sounds of it. They are prone to be brittle especially supporting heavy flowers. That's why staking or supporting is a smart thing to do, and even then heavy winds or rains can snap them.

What you have is stem rot probably from to much water or a soil fungus. New eyes should appear and grow. Be very careful with the amount of water they get until they are well established and are 4-6" out of the ground.

If you just have a few dahlias, one trick is to snip off the bottom wires of a tomato cage, INVERT it over your plant, then bend the bottom wires at an angle over the reversed top bar (that is now resting on the ground) into the earth like stakes. The reason? Dahlias are very top-heavy, and a normal tomato cage has the widest loop at the top. If they are reversed, and if the grower trains the dahlia to grow INSIDE the loops, then the cage can do a pretty good job supporting the canes as it grows. Hope this helps someone... -CiCi
