This evening I was looking online for some information about a daylily called PINK FANFARE. I came across an article about the hybridizer, Oscie Whatley, that I found interesting. It has some great photographs that I thought some of you might enjoy. I'll provide the link below.

Kathy, what a great article. I only grow a few Whatley cultivars (Ram and Polar Ice), but I added six more to my wish list from the article: Call of Uniqueness, Deliberate Pace, Rose Impact, Tippecanoe, Greek Effect and Buttercream.

Now I'm off to see where I can find them . . .

Chris, I know Marietta Gardens has Rose Impact. The Shooter's might have the other ones you are interested in as well. John has told me that they do not list everything they have. So it might be worth a try to email them and ask. The only Whatley CV I grow is Bear Claws.

WOW, thanks everyone. I don't know what I mean by fluffy either. I like the words Frou Frou or is it froo-froo better. You have given me several to look at. Oh, good - that's even better. It's kind of hard to tell with Chris; but I'm also a married "she", and I'd just as soon keep the dh that I've got already. Blue Pink Beauty has been on my provisional wishlist. There is a zone 4 garden within driving distance that is trying it out, but it was a brand new 2-fan plant last year. I was surprised when I got to see it bloom. I was expecting an obvious lavender cast to it, but I couldn't see any blue at all. It was very pink, and probably a true pink, as well. San Ignacio is also in a zone 6 garden farther away (but still in driving distance). I took it off my order lists, and plan to buy it from them - once I've had a chance to see it in bloom, count buds, and so on. I just missed seeing it last year. (Rats!) Thanks, Sharon

Link below to 'The Art of Hybridizing' by Oscie Whatley. Everything you will need. Selfing; crossing one to itself, is a quick way to fix particular genes/traits. It also fixes any weakness in the plant. Selfing extremely hardy plants usually results in some interesting plants. Selfing weak plants is usually a disaster. There are two different types of color pigments in daylilies, so mixing coloring is not straight forward. I don't rule anything out. 'Dragon King' is a pretty nice result of a yellow to red cross. Seriously, they have role in the garden IMO, holding up their part of the backs of borders. To my eyes, the small flowers on their tall scapes are charming and graceful. They are not dramatic, and you won't go running across a lawn yelling, "Wow! What's THAT blooming over there!" If you're a hybridizer looking to produce 10" spiders or something like that, they won't be your cup of tea. But they are pretty, and they can add a different look to a daylily collection. +++ Dear Lynxe, Great comments you made above! I meant to comment when you posted, but the last 2 days have been horridly hectic. I am one of those hybridizers breeding for the 10 inch spider/UFs, but I do love and appreciate the tall and small daylilies. Afterall, tall and small is how natural selection designed tall daylilies! H. altissima and H vespertina (a form of altissima) are the two tallest daylily species, and they have small (maybe 3 to 3.5 inch) "tailored"? blossoms on well branched scapes. They look perfectly natural and in balance to me. Although some people freak out if a small flower is on a tall scape, it looks natural to me, untold eons of natural selection can't be "wrong". :-) One very interesting thing about H. altissima's scapes and one reason why have not used it directly in my tall lines (though it is behind some of Stout's plants that I used, like 'Challenger')is this: if you follow the scape of H altissima down into the clump and pull it out (after it has dried in the fall) you will see that it narrows down to a flat segment like a piece of strapping tape. And, after the seedpods mature that scape will rotate on this natural hinge and the seeds will scatter 60 inches from the parent clump. This is a perfectly adapted reproductive strategy to scatter the seeds far from the parent clump. However, that hinged scape will give those of us fits who are trying to put huge flowers on it (not the 3 inch ones it was "designed" for). The base of an H. citrina scape has a triangular shape. This is a stable, upright form. Also, H citrina's flowers are quite a bit larger than H altissima. In my breeding program citrina has given larger flowers, and sturdier scapes than H altissima, and that is why I have used citrina so extensively. As I mentioned above, H altissima is behind some of the Stout cultivars I used as foundation stock: 'Challenger', 'Autumn Minaret', 'Statuesque'etc. Stout had already selected against the willowy and hinged scape traits, so they did not bother me. Can you explain the adjective "tailored" to me? I have always read that, and it never really made sense to me. Does it mean without a lot of extraneous ruffles etc.? Clean lines? For those of you who like the tall and small look, and like fragrant, nocturnals please look into H. citrina vespertina. This is a lovely, lovely plant blooms very similar to H altissima, but the height is maybe 30-36 inches, however it is amazingly branched and budded, the scapes are beautifully upright and delicate and have a very "twiggy" look. This plant is radically fertile (pollinate at dusk), fragrant and has given good seedlings. best to all, Brian

Linda, thanks for pointing me toward Marietta. I did check their price list, but holy cow! They have Deliberate Pace listed at $250. Call of Uniqueness is pricey, too. They did have a couple I'd like at good prices, and I found one at Singing Oakes (love that place). I think a couple of them may have to wait a while.

Ed, I agree -- it would have been great to meet such a colorful and honest man.

Good article. I think I've seen it before, but it's always nice to reread the interesting daylily stuff. I have only a few of his daylilies - RAM, BUTTER CREAM, PARABOLA. Can you tell I like yellows? :) At some point, I'd like to get more of his plants, especially some pink ones.

Thanks for sharing that great article, I really enjoyed it. I planted his 'Mexican Art' last summer, so I hope it blooms this year. I've coveted his 'Maple Hues,' and I'd really like to get 'Rose Impact.' Such fine flowers, I could never choose a single favorite from that article.

I hadn't really thought about how many Whatley daylilies I had until now. It turns out I have five! (Who knew!) They are Candor, Fire Burst, Ram, Strung Out and Volver.

I remember (anyone else?) not that long ago when a lot of daylilies from Mr. Whatley's garden were listed on the LA...I thought about a couple of them, but wasn't quick enough.

Good luck on that Buttercream, Chris! (hehe...just kidding with you...it seems to be very hard to get and very expensive...every now and then I see a fan pop up on the LA)...If you really want it, I think you might be able to get a fan from Rick Yost (for a pretty penny). I have a few seedlings with Buttercream as a parent...I have my fingers and toes crossed!

I showed you guys one from last summer that had Bear Claws as a parent and was very large...I am hopeful this summer it will really shine, but who knows.

I couldn't find the BEAR CLAWS seedling on your web site. Would love to see it.

How embarrassing is this? Your post reminded me that I also have BEAR CLAWS. How on earth could I have forgotten about that one?????

Hi Lynxe: Hmmm, the link works for me...and it's the second one pictured, the red one....I suppose you could also find it by going to the Seedlings label on the right side...it's the first post to come up, dated June 25, 2007...same thing, second photo down...

I should have around nine seedlings to bloom next year from this cross...I hope...I think four bloomed this past year, but I liked the big red one the best...so far...

Anyway, sorry you couldn't find it. Try again!

Got it! And -- apparently -- had it the first time.:))) I was reading too quickly....thought the legend to the first seedling referred to the red one. Love the size of that seedling.... That thing is huge! I wonder what BEAR CLAWS would produce if paired with something like Linda Agin's RED FRIDAY?
