Brenda's Irises featured in 'Irises' this month

Hi all,

Brenda's garden is featured in the American Iris Society's magazine Irises this month. Congratulations, Brenda! You're published, in print!

I especially always like the way Brenda has a knack for pairing iris with other perennials and shrubs.

My last iris to bloom is the Japanese iris, Picotee Wonder. Each year it has one or two blooms. This year only one, but, it is well worth waiting for. It is planted on the south side of my house, over top of the cistern and gets lots of snow cover in the wintertime. I bought it in 2003 and it seems to like it there, although it is a slow increaser of fans for me. Brenda

Gil, this is my grape scented iris. When it rains, the petals sort of melt together making the flower look like mush. But the stems are tall enough that you can easily bend over and bury your nose in its luscious fragrance: The Calgary Hort. Society published some books (The Calgary Gardener Vol. 1 and 2) a while back; this is the information they give about bearded irises in our climate: "Developed and selected for flower size and colour rather than winter hardiness, they require ideal conditions to survive our winters." I have a feeling that the TBs I've lost were either planted too late in the season to develop good roots, or they were not growing in ideal conditions. I've also lost a few because of deer. They don't eat them...they just stomp all over them in winter in order to get to the cedars. I'm determined to keep trying because many of them are so beautiful. Please keep us updated re: all your new TBs, Gillian. I hope they all grow well and bloom for you this spring!

The irises aren't really graded by hardiness zone. Chuck Chapman is the most northerly major iris grower and hybridizer and since all his plants are field grown (i.e. he doesn't just order a crate of them from Holland, they multiply in his fields), they all pass the acid test of Guelph winters or he doesn't sell them. Since Guelph is somewhat warmer than the prairies, there could be some difference in hardiness. He does note on his website some TBs that perform well in cold climates. If you're worried, order the smaller types of irises such as SDBs. They tend to be hardier. And yeah, we are all broke from gardening but we can share recipes for dandelion stew and toaster shakings if your family is starving.

Hi Renee, just got the magazine, so cool!

I got a bunch of new irises last year from sales and trades, so I'm hoping to see about 20 new TB faces bloom. I also have a new love, japanese irises, and got about 12 of those last year. So much to look forward to!

Thanks Reneee, for making it happen. My (young) kids were so amazed to see our garden in a magazine. Pretty pleased myself :-)

Just got a new computer for Christmas, finally moved all the photos over and am about to start sorting through for posting some new photos on GW. Wonder sometimes if I'm boring people, because many times this year's pictures aren't all that different from last year's. But this time of year we need some pretty photos to remind us that Spring is not that far away.

Brenda, I would never be bored with any of your photos. I could look at hundreds of them and get so many ideas. Your gardens are absolutely gorgeous and very interesting with your mix of bulbs, perennial, vines and shrubs. You are extremely talented and I'm always so happy when you post new photos.

ok - soon as we get some cold weather (later this week) I'll be sorting through photos.

Today and tomorrow it's supposed to be high 40s - Jan Feb weather??? so I'll be outside working in the woods, clearing out invasives etc. But back to freezing after that.

I must admit I spend more time looking at catalogs, magazines, and online this time of year . . .

Brenda, it sounds like there will be some new and spectacular things to look at in your garden this year. Can't wait to see what you do with the Japanese irises. They are exquisite things- I saw a photo of some pure white ones once that looked like birds in flight. I'm getting antsy for spring...

I saw some "Great WHite Heron" that were huge in White FLower Farm, but didn't want to spend that much on them. Now I wish I had, they aren't offering them this year.

My iris are going by the pond, but realistically, it's going to take a few months to get that area ready for planting. I've been chopping down saplings and other weeds from the area this winter.
