Finally have my land, lets get growing!

I moved from FL to MO, and found my farm. Now I can put my babies in their permanent homes!

My hubby swears that all of my daylilys made the trip here (I moved first, he came later with all of our stuff). But I have nowhere near what I know I had. So, I will be buying up a storm this spring.

Many of by babies lost their tags, and my seedlings ALL lost theirs. So I will be more or less starting over.

What a great predicament you're in -- all that land and lots of shopping to do! I've run out of room (unless my husband can talking me into building a new place on some other property we own). The biggest temptation is having unlimited space to grow daylilies.

Bringing them indoors won't make any difference. Onions are unique in their growing needs. In zone 7 onion plants are either planted in the fall and left to over-winter or in the late winter/very early spring (February here) and they are done now and being harvested because the days are getting shorter now as of June 20th. Seeds are started several weeks before planting out time. I start mine indoors in December. The type of onion is also important and in most of zone 7 we have to use short-day varieties only. Yours have most likely reached their maximum size although if you thin them out a great deal you might get a few of them to bulb up a little bit more. You'll want to do some research into how to grow onions for next year and enjoy them this year as bite sized morsels. Dave

I sent in the "Santorini of Greece" tomato to the swap. After flooding, extremely high humidity, heat, etc. last summer, the Santorini was one of a handful of plants (out of 40+ varieties) that never showed a hint of disease and when everything else stopped producing during the worst of the heat, it continued to pump out tons of fruit. It definitely was the workhorse in my garden and will certainly be considered for another spot in the garden this season. The fruit is ribbed, probably around 4-6 oz. and was meaty like a paste but much more flavorful than most paste tomatoes I've tasted.

Sure. We followed the plans for the top of this cold frame made of PVC http://www.pvcplans.com/coldframe.htm He made the bottom to fit right inside of the bed and we buried it some. We covered it with plastic drop cloth from the painting section of Lowes. Next year I will have time to plan ahead and order some thicker plastic but we were on a time crunch. I think if I had it to do over again, we would have used 1/2" pvc instead of the 3/4". We weren't able to get enough clips to hold the cover on (that's why one isn't covered) and if we had used the smaller pvc, we could have used those large 2" black binder clips to hold the plastic on. That's what I used when I lived in WA and built a hoop house. here's a link to show you what clips I'm talking about http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/838056/Office-Depot-Large-Binder-Clips-2/?cm_vc=C5203 My husband doesn't really draw out plans, kinda builds as he goes (drives me nuts but who am I to complain if he does the job) We had to try and figure out how to cover the ends since we didn't have any more clips and needed to be able to get in easily to water. I thought of lattice and we found some plastic lattice with smaller openings. On the side that gets the most wind, we covered the lattice with plastic and stapled through small cardboard pieces to help secure it. We have a heavy duty staple gun so hubby had to push down the ends on the outside with his multi tool so I wouldn't get poked. I suggested shorter staples but.... Then we just poked a few holes through the plastic and zip tied it to the frame. The other side of the lattice we left uncovered so that the plants would get some air. You could cover it but we ran out of time and it seems to work just fine. Our garden is right by the fire station on a busy road, we even had a couple of people stop and come see them and ask how we built them. If you need close up pictures of any of it, let me know. I have a couple on my blog but I could email more. Something else we did, since we get so much bloody wind, I tied zip ties around the bottom of the frame and stapled them to the box. I got my first tomato from it! It's smaller than some of the other ones but it had some of the most amazing flavor I have had in a while. "Those tomatoes are the color of my envy!" I have attempted growing them so many times! When I first tried them I tried growing them in the ground, but the nematodes in the soil completely killed them. Then I tried doing them in containers, and there was a horrible whitefly problem at the time. Now I have them in bigger containers, and I tried the moisture control type of miracle gro, and it doesn't turn to mud like the regular one does, so watering is much easier! They do go through a half- to a full-gallon of water every day.

Congratulations! Wish I were in your shoes.

I'm still on a city lot- large lot but still, I miss the days when I had acreage (about 20yrs ago). I was into roses big time then. Had just one dl.

I'm longing for more space and a better life for my kids than city living.

Congrats on all the new space Cheri. Living on a farm gives you lots of opportunities to over extend yourself in the plants that you love, but that goes part and parcel with having lots of land. I'm sure you're going to love having little to no contraints on what and how much you can grow. Pretty darn certain you'll love it.

I'm sorry to hear that you have lost the I.D.s of your DLs, but am happy to hear you have moved to a farm. Be sure and send us pics. We have 30 acres so we have lots of room for expansion. We have a lot of new cultivars, and I am really looking forward to spring and summer. You will really enjoy your place. You will have lots of enjoyment ahead of you this coming year!

Congrat Cheri - you will so love all that room. Like Betsy said - send pictures of blooms out during the summer and sometimes we can jog your memory with identification...This forum is packed with wonderful folks that love talking daylilies and learning about what everyone else is creating. We will be anxious to here how you choose to arrange your flowers and everything..

Thanks everyone. Cold here, single digit temps last night, and for tonight. But will be getting warmer, just not fast enough! Next winter, I am sure I will welcome the down time, lol.

The best thing is that I have pics of all my daylilys, with names, but there are so many that look quite alike.....but when I hear a name, I will remember it. I was crossing quite a bit, and it will be fun to see which ones make it through the winter.

Being in SW Missouri, do I need to trade/give away my evergreen DL's? I guess if I have any that make it, they have passed the cold test. But they might not do as well here, so they might need new homes.....
