My new project - Pinetum - finally is started

Finally I started to work on my major project!:).

I was inspired by my friends from GW - Richard, Sam, Edwin, Dax, Zsolt, Will, Dave, Ken, Mike - thank you all for your support and advices!

My garden is overcrowded now, but I don't want to stop to collect conifers:) Now I have 3 ha meadow, and there will be my new Pinetum...

It is just begining - empty meadow and there's nothing.... I'll try to show you the process of making. Maybe you will be interested. I will be grateful for your opinions:).

I found in the forest big stones - maybe I will use this hill too... for some rock plants.... I think - nice landscape....

That is very exciting news - I look forward to seeing your progress! It looks like a wonderful plot of ground to work with. And look at all those great rocks to work into your design. A dream come true for you. :^)

Thank you all for these words of appreciation, David, Wannabe, Jarpe, Al, Whaas!! It is very nice to me:) I need to write a novel to answer to you all:) Tj, my dogs knows how to dig holes .... but eat like horses, indeed... About the forest - my mother does not like this forest and she called it such. I love it and plan to plant some shade tolerant plants there. Ken, I understand your views... I like nature gardens a lot! But my Ã¢ÂÂurban lawnÃ¢ÂÂ area is only 1/6 part of my meadow and maybe 1/10 part of my all property:) My meadow was too wild and I need to mow, otherwise itÃ¢ÂÂs all overgrow with bushes, birches and alders. All large meadow mowed a neighbor with a tractor once a year. My husband mowed the only place where I plant my trees and around the house... The fence has been around only a small part of the meadow around the house. Set the fence around the entire property is too expensive for me. And all valuable trees I plants inside. Outside I plant Picea abies cultivars, Pinus sylvestris... and so on ... So enjoy the wild flowers and grasses I can fully:) Thank you for advices! I certainly appreciate it:) Mike, thanks. This fence is more meant for my dogs:) Last winter there was nothing destroyed. ThereÃ¢ÂÂs not a deers, roe deers only. But my trees they were not eroded ... I also did not see their footprint in the snow. But the protection is not redundant. Thank you for advice - about the rocks moving! I will tell my husband about this idea:) Dax, you do not see a photo where I digging holes, because at this time I digging the hole, not photographed selfie:) My digging and planting record is 7 holes and 7 trees in the one day. Here I am - after digging:) - About the fence - thanks, but I do not like that the it restricts the part of meadow .. And divides it... But by the time it will not be so visible. When trees grow larger... Alex, thanks about your nice words:) About the native trees in my forest - there are Picea abies, Pinus sylvestris, Betula pendula, Acer platanoides, Ulmus laevis, glabra, Alnus glutinosa, Alnus incana, Salix caprea, Salix alba, Salix viminalis, Populus tremula... I'm actually using 'Tuxedo Junction', a very simple pattern, but I'm going to position/organize the blocks to make a heart shape. Only using 2 colours though. I don't want to use sashing between the blocks as it would take away from the heart design. I was also thinking of only 1 border, and a pretty thin one at that. I'd like to make this one mostly "design" without too much border. The quilt that was 72" x 90", was it a good sized "nap quilt" or snuggling quilt for two people to fit under? What would be the "standard" size for this type of quilt? I was actually at Evelyn's a couple days ago, Mary ... I was quite disappointed with their selection. It is THE place I go for local fabric, they have a nice selection of fabric. I inquired about batting and was told that they only carry 1 type now. No wool, no cotton, no more bamboo, the only one they have is a cotton/poly blend that is very very thin. I was looking for something fluffier and a little warmer than that. I was quite disappointed as they used to have a pretty good variety, but apparently not anymore. Also, their prices seem quite inflated now (more than before) compared to other stores around here or online. And the woman in the store couldn't help me with these questions that I'm asking online, so I wasn't all that impressed with that either (although in the past, the women in the store have been quite knowledgeable so it could have been a blip). I've been reading online, and through previous forum threads about batting. It sounds like wool is nice and warm, fairly fluffy (I guess I'm looking for a mid to high loft batting, apparently, if I want fluffy??) but expensive and something I'd have to buy online. Also NOT easily washed or dryer friendly, and since it would be used often, I'd like it to be easier to clean. The other fluffy option sounds to be polyester ... but ... Is there a poly/cotton blend fluffy enough and warm enough, if I find a "high loft" one? Is there a brand that is well loved, something that you'd all recommend, and that I could order online?

I just discovered the Vintage Market and Design chalk paint yesterday at the "home base" store by the same name in Albuquerque. This is the shop where this paint brand and finishes were developed.My head is swimming after browsing the shop with all the design possibilities! Lol! Bac717, you've done a lovely job on the chairs! Have you watched the YouTube instruction videos on this brand of paint? I've found them very helpful. Also, I'm not sure if you are aware but VMD does not recommend a wax as the final finish for your furniture but one of their clear coats over their brand of wax. I started my first piece last night and am excited about many more to come and I am so happy that this shop is local for me! I'm not affiliated at all with this company just an excited customer. Sue

Thanks for the advice! Bowl and towel, got it! I was considering a dark purple, but was worried it would be too contrast-y. Otherwise, I was also considering a medium amber glass. My SIL wants me to use blue, but I'm not sold on that idea. Decisions..... Judy B.

Oh Ireena, you're making me very jalous which such a nice piece of land!
Also the rock part is very nice to create a natural rock garden!
If I would live in your neighbourhood, I would like it very much to help you in planting the new stuff.
In any case I'll help you with some very nice conifers for this project. :0)

This will be a very nice setting indeed for your Pinetum. It's nice that you've got plenty of full sun, shade, and everything in between, so you can accomdate a great variety of plant material. I love the moss growing on your rockery (last pic), it gives it a look of great age. When you plant in between the rocks, you shold try not to disturb the moss as little as possible to maintain that look.

What do you plan to do this season, what will you do first? It will be very interesting to see your pinetum unfold. Post lots of pics, please.

Will wind be an issue? Will you have to plant a windbreak?
Will you have to irrigate?
Any animals that might be a problem?
What are you going to do first?
Will you be moving there in the future?
You must be very excited. I know I was when I first bought my land.
Again, congratulations. It's a big step.

The slopes appear to provide nice drainage and of course
the horizons are ready made for a wonderful long range

Conifer Master Ireena,
I guess you know that this great field is not the same as the small garden around the house. In the next 10 years you may plant so many as possible, but nothing visible for the eye. (ask Dax)

Outer and inside borderlines may reach 1000-1300 meters. This may need 3-5000 quick growing pines or spruces, or Thuja plicatas from a forestry nursery. Just for microclimate, and avoiding hard winds. I have unlimited quantity of Thuja plicata Euchlora seeds, the hardiest thuja. You can import from Russia seeds of Abies sibirica, Picea obovata, different Larix specieses. Abies lasiocarpa seems also a good idea, in Finland they have big forests of it, or mountainous pines (cembra, flexilis, rotundata, pumila etc)

If you are ready with the Pinetum forest in 2025 the big form cultivars may also planted. Never dream about vaste rock gardens there, its better if you transport some smaller rocks to home.

Around 2030 you may enjoy the Pinetum as a sightseeing program. Wish you the best to this game. Sometimes helps a perfect planting program, and knowing this you will see the future garden as a fundamental vision. This is the most important for lifetime plans. You will see a future, meanwhile the present doesnt show anything.

how far from your home... will you build a house on the property ... ???

that is not far.. from what my horse pasture lot looked like 12 years ago ....

i am honored to be one of those who inspired you ...

do you have water on the site???? because of my hosta.. i was forced to put in irrigation.. and in doing that.. i put in about 20 spigots around my 5 acres .... its not hard ... nor that expensive ... and having water nearby.. is imperative ...

i see i am the same page as mike/botann ....

Wow, I am amazed and delighted with your interest!:) For me is very important your opinion and experience.

Thank you Ken for bed making idea - with Roundup and woodchips:).... And I love your sense of humor:))))

I like a lot Dave sophisticated bed edges (curves) and very tasteful garden design...

I love Mike fantastic old garden - park with so wonderful color harmony and rocks...

Zsolt taught me to be curious and precise. And never stop to look.

I admire Will of his plant diversity and his patience and obsession with conifers.

From Edwin I took over the idea of Ã¢ÂÂÃ¢ÂÂsetting up my own Pinetum. And I like his accuracy (orderliness) everywhere. But he have the artist's soul in plant breeding and selection :)

Dax, I inspired by you and sow Quercus macrocarpa acorns (seeds from USA). Now I have 10 little oaks for my meadow:) And 4 Quercus coccinea...

Richard is Picea lover - like me. His garden is very understandable and close to me:)

I would have to write a very very long letter to answer all your questions. But I would definitely do it! In parts :)

Congratulations! Beautiful place for your project.

But keep care. Here in Germany this would be not possible without a fence round each plant. We have too much deer in the woods.
