A peek inside

Nothing fancy, just a little protection from the rain.

You may notice an opening at the end of the tunnel, actually both ends are open. I do this to keep good air circulation, when the ground is wet condensation builds up inside and I get rot. Since I've had forced air, rot due to excess moisture has stopped. I'm experimenting with one tunnel and leaving an end closed.

Still have some room in the 1st photo to walk, I'll need to find some plants to clutter it up.

My guess is this is about half of my collection, everything left out can take the cold and wet exposure.

Do you have Aloe dichotoma? They get real fat, I bet you can grow them outdoors where you are.

You can't really see it in the 2nd photo, but there's 2 dichotoma, 7 ramosissima(one regular, 6 dwarf). They all have fattened up since putting them in the beds.

Once in a while it's gets too cold, like last winter's 20 deg for a 5days killed my unprotected large ramosissima. So I'm a little hesitant to leave do it again.

I'll give the sm pot question a try: Generally, a smaller pot allows the roots to more uniformly fill the pot and thus suck the water out of all parts of the pot at about the same rate. So you won't have parts of the soil that are dry and other parts that are still wet...just ripe for mold/rot. A poster on here named Russ has mentioned this before, and he has maybe dozens(?) of Aroids. Here on the central east coast we've had an all time record rainfall total for the year. That has added to indoor humidity as well. As for the rot this year as opposed to other yrs: Depending on where you live, higher humidity than ever before could have helped the rot to prosper. I had an Elephant Ear get 2 deep rot areas on it's trunk/corm when storing it indoors for the winter. I scraped the rot out with a metal teaspoon and its handle tip. I felt terrible doing it because I didn't know what the outcome would be but I didn't want to do nothing. Only the softer areas were easy to scrape out so I only scraped those. Then I rinsed it with water, placed it next to a fan, and a couple days later when completely dry I sprayed copper fungicide on it. In my case I then stored it for a few months in a sm bag of peat moss - but in your case it would be re-potted. That was 12 mos ago, It did great over the summer when planted and produced a couple pups.

Haven't really subscribed to mags for years, but I have bought a number at check-out counter in the past two years, primarily the BHG bath-kitchen ones, and Renovation Style, and one called "Kitchen Trends." Often began reading them while waiting for DH in a store. Also bought the Consumer Reports mag at newstand, without paging through it. I like BH&G for its down-to-earth attitude, its placidity with paint and DIY. Triangulating between the posh mags and House Beautiful and the plebian ones helps me see the field better. I did a lot of reading of library copies of Kitchens and Baths and of kitchen remodel guidebooks. We have a fabulous local library system. Sometimes I go spend a couple hours in library reading latest copies of all those titles that others mention above. Our MPR public radio station sponsorships bring us Minnesota Monthly and its occasional companion Midwest Home, which covers the region's high end building industry primarily. This publication is helpful for showing what are the upcoming open houses, shows, etc. and what are the posh kitchens like, but it is also aimed well above my family's interests and budget and has some downright dumb designs in it sometimes. Portions are online--see link. I do know that a number of helpful images at beginning of project came from this mag--sometimes just a color scheme or a shade or something. Also like reading the pieces put out by local industries--the local co. tile mag, the Parade of Homes promos, etc. Thanks for leads to other online mags. I love to browse. PawPrint, Your Amana is a Whirlpool. They've varied the size of the baffles over the course of years and models. I imagine drum size/capacity (diameter and depth) is a factor relating to baffle design for varying the tumble pattern. I have a 1985 standard-capacity (29" cabinet width, shallow drum) unit with two small baffles molded into the metal drum and a larger plastic baffle mounted with screws. A 1991 KitchenAid super-capacity (29" cabinet width, deeper drum & slightly larger diameter) with two larger plastic baffles and one smaller. A 2000 super-capacity (27" width cabinet, deeper drum) with three large baffles, and a 2002 of the same design also with three large baffles.

I"m not a fan of the stone arches either--seems out of place for around here and not really in keeping with the style of the home overall. But I guess if I could afford an $850,000 I could afford to replace that stone ;-) I'm not bothered by the repurposed painted pink furniture-- a human touch in an otherwise pretty commercial looking home, maybe. I love this house, but it's much more formal and "matchy" than my own style and doesn't seem "homey" as it is shown in the photos. I hope when it's just being lived in and not on the market there's a dog or two and some stacks of books around. They have always had a tree swing in the front yard, so I think they might not be as stiff and starchy as those photos might suggest.

I don't know I think some fat plants deserve a bit of BIG fonts.

Awesome display.

I particularly like the last grouping that look like they're all leaning towards the sun.

Much on that table is setting blooms! Pelargonium, Tylecodon, Brighamia, Othonna, and Dudleya. Pelargonium triste looks like it may be the 1st to flower, or even rapaceum.

Wonderfully impressive pics!

Speaking of pellies, I'd like to try a few of the caudiciform species. Do you have any suggestions as to which ones I should start with?

Thank you! I guess "caudex" does give it away...

As for Pelargoniums to start with...whatever you can find ;^)

Most are all very easy, there's a few that are water sensitive and need to be protected from winter rains but most are hardy here outdoors all season.
