Shot some plants about the yard today since it was raining and colors seem to be more vibrant in this weather. Not many aloes blooming yet, but the plants themselves are looking nice this time of year.

Wow. Hard to fathom being able to have such a landscape. And the Aeonium 'Voodoo' is incredible. I was looking at an online listing for a Mangave Blood Spot earlier today, and gosh, that plant is beautiful.

Thank you all for the nice comments :) Cat...this bed is on the west side so it's shaded until late afternoon. There is also a Maple that shades the left side of the bed with dappled light. Sandy yes is sure does make you happy, especially knowing there's lots more to follow :) Dave lol there will be taller ones soon....weather permitting. Mgal thank you...I can tell you're a purple lover ;)

@Stephen C - Here is my Paint Analysis of the two colors you are contemplating using and why they work. First just from this visual (and no color is accurate on a 2D form like the Internet, but gives you information) you can see that the two colors are far enough apart that provide enough difference to look good. Second, you can see that the LRV (Light Reflective Value) is substantially different, which is the difference in amount of light reflected by any color. CL has an LRV of 93 which on a scale of 0-100 shows it reflects a good amount of light. PO has an LRV of 70 so you can see it reflects substantially less by 25%. The next factor to analyze is the Hue Angle. The Hue Angle is the position on the Color Strategist Color Wheel that gives us information on what main color is this particular paint color. In this case, CL is 109.1 which is in the Yellow Hue family on it's way to Green/Yellow and in the "cool" segment of the Hue Angle. this means that this off white will appear to the eye as pretty cool. The PO Hue Angle is 91.6 so it is solidly in the Center of the Yellow Hue Family but just into the Cool segment. When colors are in the same Hue Family they generally work fine together. Much depends on your natural and artificial light in your space, but overall these should work well.

Flowering quince and forsythia are my go-tos for first blooms with the added bonus of bringing in some early twigs to bloom indoors. Some of the smaller willows may be fun for that too. There are some very pretty double quinces out there (pink, red, coral), they bloom on old wood. Have you considered the red and yellow twig dogwoods? New growth branches are brightly colored, pretty in winter, the leaves turn in fall (nothing too spectacular but still some color). And ditto on the camelias, they will get big eventually but respond to hard pruning; but check your local experts in case freezes end up destroying the flowers (always heartbreaking). I'm a bit in the same place as you are, filling in holes. This year my lenten roses (not a bush but hey, they fill up the space) really kicked into gear and it was really fun to have those out along with some jonquils (little daffies that bloom earlier than the bigger ones), showing some color while things were still dreary. I also planted some crocuses this year for the first time, the yellow ones were the first ones to come up and they really early (along with the quince)... all those were about month and a half before the roses/peonies kicked in. Another thing may be some blueberry bushes. They bloom early, cute pink bell-shaped flowers. The birds steal all the fruit but it's a pretty shrub and shows some color in fall. One more: this probably works better for you as you are in a cooler zone, but look up ribes. These are goosberries--google "pink flowering currant." Super-early bloomer, nice pink dangling flower racemes. Here (7b) it gets too hot and these kinda die in the heat/humidity; you may have better luck. They are easy to propagate so if you get some (Annie's Annuals carries pink and also some yellow ones sometimes) you should be set. I'm growing one in shade, seems to be doing OK, bloomed this year and is growing, so I'm hoping that even if it struggles in the heat, it puts on a show in late winter/early spring.

Wow.... They are all beauties but the 1st one gets the grand prize , I've been trying to get my hands on one of those, So where do you live Lol.. I'm sure you also belong to cacti and succulent Annonimous (for addicts) who are hooked on succulents, and congratulations to you Lzrddr. People who don't collect cacti & succulents would even stop to notice your collection I'm sure right cause they are a conversation piece for sure. Enjoy them. Greg

*SWOON* Another garden of envy! Just stunning. Absolutely stunning. Like many others, I find that with each glorious photo I'm saying to myself, "Oh, I have to get me one of those plants!" But, for me, the one that really made me stop in my tracks is the Blood Spot. Now I must find one.

Awesome! Weird that it's raining south of the grapevine. It's sunny and warm today in the San Joaquin Valley. Usually it's the other way around. Great job!

Lz, Wow, beautiful succulents. Your variegated Agaves are gorgoues.
I especially like your variegated Beaucarnea. Do you have any idea of its age?

My other favorites are: Echeveria Doris and Mangave Blood Spot. Is Mangave Blood Spot a small succulent or grow tall?

PS. I see some plants in pots. Since I don't know your location, are all in containers or some in-groun?

most plants are in the ground. Agave attenuata is in a pot, though several reasons. Easy to move it into the back yard if there is something going on the in neighborhood and I don't want to get it stolen... and also it gets cold here (down to 25F a few years ago) and that plant is a total wimp when it comes to frost. By the way, I have seen those variegated Agave attenuatas as Lowes several times over the last few years... pretty affordable, too! This one was a sucker I got from a friend that just ended up being a great specimen. And now it, too, has a sucker on it... cool.

Lz, I don't know where you live, but here in IL, very few rarities are sold.

We've been to Lowe's twice, 'two different stores.' What a disappointment.

I can honestly say, the last 20+ years, I've never once seen a variegated Agave for sale. Our grocery store had a green leaf Agave in a 3", decorative pot, approximately 10-yrs-ago. That was the first and last time I've seen Agaves. Believe me, Lz, I hunt for rare plants. lol.
