The spring that wasn't

We've had super unusual weather here in the Pacific Northwest and it seems to be ending this weekend. Average temperatures for the month of March were *colder* here then the averages in February. At my place in the lower hills, we had two days in March over 50 degrees, a pretty unreal stat considering this area is known for being mild.

It made me wonder if it's better or worse for conifers to have a 'slow, gradual Spring' or a Midwest style, winter one day, 70s the next.

Also I've wondered about cloud cover. We've had an extraordinarily cloudy winter as well, even for the PWN. Can plants sufficiently 'grow' off of mostly to completely cloudy weather or do they need direct or nearly direct sunshine to flourish?

Another thing I've heard is that global warming trends will cause the PWN to have even slower, mild Springs in the future with even more clouds. Being well-rooted here, I can't help but wonder if that will affect things, good or bad.
