Mirrored Sunlight Just As Good?

I'd like to increase the sunlight to my Meyer in the winter. Does mirror-reflected sunlight onto the plant help the same as regular sunlight?

It is very close. You can even put curved foil behind the tree to magnify the sun to get 2x power or so. Hanging a white sheet behind the tree makes the entire north side of the plant bright. I have found this works best.

A word of warning, mirrors around plants break often. foiles around plants are hard to work with and plants get broken. Sheats often fall and ensnare plants. Go ahead and give it a try

Thanks. Do you use aluminum foil or a linen sheet? I was going to look for an outdoor mirror.

I've used shiny aluminum foil insulation laid on the ground on the south side of my sunroom to add heat and light. Also have a reflective material, Extenday, on the floor of my greenhouse. You also might consider a better covering on the greenhouse. Mine, double poly, probably blocks at least 50% of incoming light. Just remember more light in means more heat. So you need a good cooling system. If you are talking reflective plywood on the east and west side it can't be very tall or it will block light early and late in the day. And if your covering material is the real issue, trying to push more in won't help much.

Isn't it wonderful getting more sun? I've had lots of treework done (mostly Norway maples and thinning), and my lot has gone from mostly shade to partial shade. I want more sun! I have a plan with my tree guy to take down the last huge Norway maple in my yard as soon as the snow melts (we have about 2 feet right now). I can't wait to get rid of that thing and grow more stuff. :-D I grow bronze fennel and it doesn't produce the bulb. That is "Florence fennel" and it's a cultivar of Foeniculum vulgare that has an enlarged bulb. It is similar to celery but has a mild sweet licorice taste. I cook them with brussel sprouts and carrots, or other winter veggies. It sounds like the pesticide applicator is targeting the woody plants. Hopefully he won't hit the host plants. Next time you see the sprayer, I would go over and ask him about the herbicide. Probably Triclopyr or 2-4-d. I think they kill broad leaf plants but not grasses?

I too am in 8b just up the road in the Hilton Head area. Depending upon what type of "winter" we have this year, my TCs will stay out unless we are expecting weather below freezing. I have moved all mine into the lanei and they are tucked under/around other plants that provide some warmth and protection. On the couple of nights that we did have frost warnings already, I threw light moving blankets over them. Now I will say that the younger ones that I ordered from Bill Smoley's site this fall will stay under my fluorescent lights along with all the other succulents. I also treat many of my orchids exactly the same. I will say though that my beds in the lanei are very packed and lush so lots of "body heat" is shared between the plants! Even my poinsettias are in their pots in these flower beds. In the summer mine are moved out into a flower bed that faces the west. They again are tucked in around other plants like ferns so that it's like an easter egg hunt come fall to locate them all so I guess they get dappled sunshine even though they are in a sunny area. This is what works for me and all of them bloomed (13) this fall. The largest one actually had over 200 blooms and has just made its return back outside yesterday. Hope this helps since we're essentially in the same area. We are about 6 miles to the ocean so I know that also keeps our temps moderated.

Hmmmm, I'm going to look up the link to skylight covers in a sec. Interesting. But if Steph is thinking of making her own, it isn't that difficult, you know. The Home Depot sells 100 foot rolls of what is called SHADE CLOTH. I bought a roll of it intending to make roman shades from it, but DH opted to have plantation shutters installed here in Alabama like the ones I persuaded him to install up in Massachusetts. He really likes them. Now, I will probably use the shade cloth to make a cover outdoors for my shade loving hosta that I've gone nuts over. I have two roll up shades made of it on the totally Lexan walled sun porch, and it truly cuts the heat down, plus like Shelayne says you can see through it looking out. You don't want to put a shade on the INSIDE of your skylights Steph, because in AZ what you have is radiant heat, which will come in regardless of you stopping the LIGHT, if you don't stop it on the outside to keep the glass from heating up and transmitting/radiating the heat inward. If those purchased skylight covers can be bungeed into place, then you can see about making them yourself....or maybe ask your SISTER to sew them up for you? Are you handy with the sewing machine? Didn't we just chat about that sitting unused in most of our homes? Well, think about running a few flat hems easy as making a towel, threading the bungee through the hem, and get some young buck of an Arizona cowboy to climb up there on your roof and install it for you. Isn't your neighbor's boy big enough to help you do that? Think about it, Steph. You get the shade, and still have the light. It will make a difference.

I use a white window shade and I pull it down and out enough to not touch the tree. My trees are very small as they are all from seed. A sheet would work better for larger trees. I remove the sheet at night so that the warmth of the room reaches the tree. I tried a mirror but found that the reflected light has a very small focus on the tree.

I have a long mirror I use to provide light to the north side of my cherry tree when the sun travels to low and my house shades the south side. That worked great for an extra month of sun, but i had to constantly move the mirror Go with cloth over foil and forget the mirror. They often break when you water the plants.

But be aware that on cloudy days the mirror can make things worse! In cloudy conditions diffuse light from the sky comes from all directions. So your tree, already in a dim area due to the building, is now even darker because the mirror blocks light from that side.
I have a greenhouse with lots of potted citrus inside on the north side. I thought about covering the glass on that side with reflective foil. But on sunny days, the foil would be in the shade of the trees and reflect little light. On cloudy days it would block diffuse light entering from the north. Probably not worth doing!

citrange I have been debating that with my west and north wall of my greenhouse. I have trees to the west and my house is the north wall. I use bright white paint on my house. This really brightens things up and helps out greatly. The west wall is forest background and a bright white insulated hard wall will work better in my case, sun or no sun.

Jack_Tripper I should of read your question a little more carefully. Because I am a northerner I assumed your tree was in a window and the north diffused light would be nil and thus a white sheet would work best.

Being the tree is outdoors a mirror would work best. Buy and indoor mirror and paint the back side with an exterior paint to make it an out door mirror and set it up when Its

Very inventive everyone, and yet this idea is not new...

Did you know that Rjukan in Norway where my friend lives actually use this concept?

Because this town is at the base of surrounding mountains, they get no sun at all, all winter...So they installed these ginormic mirrors on the mountain tops to reflect sunlight down to the town thus giving them sunlight.

Imagine how much you would appreciate this living there trying to grow a citrus tree? Take a peek..YOu'll love this article.
