The Sciadopity doesnt appear to have any browning from winter. And now Im starting to wonder if it is the cultivar 'Winergreen'. Which is quite common as common goes in my neck of the woods that doesnt brown during the winter. Just a thought. You have what to seems to have a extremely wide open property areas and no browing.'Wintergreen' a cultivar noted for dark green winter color. A buddy of mine has 3 planted at his office along a major road...no burn what so ever. Just deep, dark green color. Amazing !

Thanks guys for all the comments. Kman- I would like to assume it is Wintergreen. There isn't a single showing of burn, at all... I do have it planted in the lowest area of my property though to help it along should spring frosts, occur. I'm glad you sent it to me... now it's time to plant any of the cultivars. And, last winter was a cold one. We saw -40F windchill (that's -40 C) as well, something we can all agree on, ;0) lol.

So, I have high hopes. I'm growing Pinus jeffreyi - Abies firma (seedling and cultivar) - many zone 6 deciduous trees - and on and on. Two winters ago we had -40 temps for a two week period, non-stop. ...Don't know but being in this valley with the rolling hills and different depths, hillsides, etc- is working very well for planting of things in a microclimate type of way. The Abies firma Golden Hue is however, planted on the flattest and most exposed place on my property. Still, no damage.

Yes, my tree is alive and well. I just took a photo of it yesterday, as a matter of fact. It's just starting to come out of dormancy so it's just a photo of the structure of the tree.

I didn't start any cuttings this winter, but I will start some this July and send you another this fall. I bet the tree you have from me is root girdled and that's why it's growing so slow.

This tree was probably planted in 1998 or 1999.

Acer Japonicum Ogurayama is a very nice plant and should be planted more often. Slow growing and consistantly has some of the nicest fall color of any of my maples.

Great stuff, Dax. Quite the selection. When you say you're protecting a plant from late frost by putting it at the lowest spot, is that by the pond? If so, that may work, if not by a pond then it would need to be higher as cold air settles into low spots.

Someone else correct me if I'm wrong about low lying areas for spring frost, protection. I need to hear it twice. Also, included, I planted that Ogurayama there to protect it from morning sunlight (thinking sunlight and frost is not a good thing). Now I don't know up from down.

Mike, thanks for the photo. I always thought that tree has the most symmetrical, pyramidal form from the time I remember it being 10 feet tall. It wasn't off by an inch on any branch and a perfect cone/cylinder, shape...

They say the best spot (mind you, only a couple degrees depending on the hill size) is near the top of a downward slope. This way there is little chance of the cold air pooling because it will slide down the hill.

Hi Dax,
I would guess the tree is 20' to 25' tall, give or take. Since it's growing in zone 4a it's growing a little slower than a tree in a milder climate. It's doing remarkably well, though, considering it really shouldn't be growing here.

I'm sure there are Metasequoia growing in Canada, but whether they're growing directly above Minnesota, in Manitoba or Ontario, I don't know. That part of Canada would be zone 2 and zone 3 (In excess of -40ºF/-40ºC), so I kinda doubt it. If anyone knows of any Metasequoia growing in Manitoba or Ontario, please speak up!

I'm going to go out on the deep end and say the roots aren't girdled but rather say the plant could've been dwarfed from being in a pot too long. It's only been in the ground since 08 spring...

Still, other Met's plugs I planted last year are growing much-much faster then your plant Mike.

If the Sciadopitys you show us is the cultivar 'Wintergreen' you must have seen a grafting union.
My experience with Sciadopitys cultivars or seedlings is that they don't turn all brown in winter.

The blue Sequoiadendron giganteum isn't 'Glauca' but 'Glaucum'.

I realy like your Thuja occ. 'Wintergreen' seedling seletion with the narrow habbit.
Please keep us informed about this one in the future.

Can you tell us something more about the Larix laricina 'Blue Sparkler'?

Larix laricina Blue Sparkler is a common plant over here. I actually got it for a friend but he already had one... so it's mine. lol I don't know much about it, I think it grows slower than Wolterdingen... which doesn't say very much. That Wolterdingen grows like somebody lit a match under it.

Sherrie I named for me mom yep! A very nice witch broom. Very very slow-growing. (My) graft from Gee's is a result of a larger chunk of scionwood grafted to a larger seedling. I guess though that only time will tell.

Thanks for the Glaucum correction. I knew that god dangit. I have one other seedling from my Wintergreen seedling collection that is equally as narrow. I'll go get a photo.

No, the sciadopity's has no graft union... It may have been grown from a cutting. This cultivar is known to root much easier than other cultivated forms. Mystery unsolved for many years!

Sorry for the delay in answering your question on the width of my Metasequoia. I'd guess it's between 5' to 6' wide. If I remember, I'll take the tape measure out and actually measure the width tonight and post it here if it's different from my guess.
