Yucko days

That's what yesterday turned into. It was raining just before the kids started out for Trick or Treating. Yes, my 12 year old insisted that she still wasn't too old! It was damp and since the time changed on Sunday, getting dark fast. At least I got out of having to drive her around to hit the houses. The baby of the family broke with tradition of doing the local neighborhood and then going to her aunt's neighborhood opting for instead going with her friend to a church sponsored fest. Much to the older siblings dismay, the candy "take" was way down but she had a blast. I got to go back home and work on my pricelist and pictures for the website. I figure I was a heck of a lot more comfortable with a cup of hot tea than tromping around in wet leaves and mud going from house to house with a preteenager.

Today's just as yucky as yesterday and it's cooler too. What's going on with everyone today?

The weather here was great for the trick or treaters. They had a ball.
It's nice again today, supposed to get to 72 but then a slight chance of rain for tonight, and a cold front is coming in so the daytime temps will drop to the 60's with nights being in the mid 30's. Still nice weather for working out in the garden. I've still got lots to do. Just finished cutting back all my dl's and spraying them for rust. Now I've got to finish putting out mulch, plant some daffodil and tulip bulbs that came in, and still got several flats of dl seedlings to get in the beds. I'm also still battleing the deer. Found where they had nibbled off some of my dl seedlings out back yesterday, so I sprayed them with some of that awful smelly stuff. Still thinking about getting me a good old hound dog to let roam my garden. Maybe he/she would keep the deer run away. Well, guess I better get back outside and go to work. Just came in for a water break. :)

I just came in from a very discouraging walk through my back daylily bed and, you guessed it, the deer jumped the small fence and had their way with the daylilies. There wasn't a single leaf left -- everything was nibbled to the ground with just a little bit of chewed green showing through the dirt. From the looks of the hoof prints, they must have brought all their friends to the smorgasbord.

I'm HOPING they'll come back okay (we're talking about my latest 200 or so additions). Now I need to hear more about this milorganite. Is it easy to find?

I am officially putting Chloe under a protective bubble/shield until Idyll pets have all recovered..... pls advise when the quarantine can safely be lifted. The chill mornings are playing havoc w/ my blooming clematis -- poor Niobe that is littered w/ blooms & buds was seriously drooping -- since it's a 5 yr old I doubt it's "wilt" but suffering from the cold, cold mornings we've had - bizarre for May here. I am taking comfort in seeing Spanish Bluebells blooming in 2 areas of the back garden though -- I probably planted those bulbs 3 or more years ago and this is the first time flowering! I'd truly given them up & figured they were a flop - they're just a tiny patch but so pretty! (probably 8 out of 50 original bulbs, but ya gotta love 'em, LOL). Speaking of oriental lilies, I have really been startled as well here that my clumps are looking incredibly huge, healthy & have increased a lot since last year -- and this is for ones I planted in June I think - go figure. So apparently somethings are liking the weather, just not the ones I was expecting. Deanne, I remember your stunning photos w/ the Casablancas; you definitely need to re-install. They're smashing - to say nothing of sooo wonderful for our noses. Brenda, whenever I am flagging and think I've had a hard day, I am going to think of you -- the physical labor & long hours you put in & then come home to deal w/ stinky dogs & dinner make you into the superwoman category in my book! Chelone -- I had to dig out 4 yr old clumps of Eupatorium a few years ago & I can't imagine what your older ones were like -- it was like digging thru bedrock -- I cussed and fussed -- and it kept coming back; eventually I had to put plastic over it for several months (after round-up!) to get rid of it -- so take heart, you could just take one little piece & it will survive, trust me. I've had luck w/ potting pieces of baptisia too (altho it was probably not too old a plant)so it may be yours will bloom after a little sulk. I love that plant too -- talk about low maintenance for big bang! Im pretty enamoured of the B. Purple Smoke I bought last month too -- they come in such lovely colors these days w/ all the hybridization going on. I sure hope all others are finally really on the mend -- pets and people alike -- I think it sounds like everyone has had more than their fair share of this stuff! And donations to car shops and vets has been more than adequate. I've got a staff meeting this a.m. -- more changes and announcements -- we have a new HR head (it's somewhat of a revolving door in this firm) and they always come in and want to "make their mark" and starting changing and re-inventing the wheel -- especially the ones who have only a corporate background & have never worked in a law firm -- bad decision usually -- but Im trying to be philosophical & know that whatever new craziness they're announcing, it's sure to be a repeat or something that will cycle out eventually! However, the latest rumor seems to be the placement of "hall monitors" on each floor to monitor "work flow", can you imagine -- it sounds like floor nazis to me. Like we're kids in elementary school instead of highly paid, experienced professionals! While I dont personally expect to be a recipient of this micro-managing, I just philosophically feel strongly opposed to such ideas. Well, guess I'll know for sure in an hour (& will try to keep my trap shut about whatever they announce, LOL)... Cindy

Jan - I also get bad sinus headaches when a front is coming. Often, they turn into a migraine and the only cure is sleep. I have been taking Excedrin Migraine this year. If I take 2 pills soon after the sinus headache starts and lay down for about 30 minutes, it works wonders. The trick is timing...I have to take the pills before it turns into a migraine. They are over the counter meds and I highly recommend them. Trying to catch up on all the new posts. I've been so busy in the yard, I haven't had much computer time. And when I do have time, late at night, I'm usually too tired to type a coherent message. I've been moving a lot of plants and replanting beds. All year I've been looking at things and thinking to myself, why did I plant that here...it would've looked so much better over there. Am I the only one who does this? I also found a local tree service company that has a huge pile of free mulch and I've been stocking up. My husband and I have gotten 10 pickup truck fulls so far and could use about 20 more. Their pile of mulch is so nice and clean it disappears almost as fast as they put it out. I love that it's free, but boy oh boy, it's a lotta work shoveling into and out of a pickup truck. Kathy

I bring them to work and give them to my co-workers. I do that with a lot of the extra divisions and seedling plants in the spring. This year I brought in 10 or so divisions of Siloam Doodlebug and 8 divisions of Snowy Eyes and a few of some others. I also bring in other plants, like Lady's mantle, iris, perennial geraniums and stuff. I hate composting perfectly good plants and I'm too lazy to sell them. Most of my co-workers are not die-hard gardeners like us and don't care about things like names and genetics - they're just happy to get a nice plant with neat flowers for free! I've been doing this for a few years and it's always fun to have people come back to me and rave over a plant I gave them a year or 2 ago.

Hey Nana, Rob, Yep, it was a good trip home a little on the long side and weather was great till I got home.. then along came a dark cloud and hasn't let up.. I was so surprised to get a visitor..in fact one of my friends had said, "Put the feeder up..they are here" so I did and next day or so dang it if I didn't get a surprise.. Ofcourse I haven't seen one since..but it's been really chilly and damp..and tonight a thunderstorm... I might have to start building an Ark..then I'm sure to get at least two .. right ???? LOL.. Hear tell sun won't shine till maybe Sunday.. then hopes I'll have some ready willing and able to feed :) Nana, not sure about those plants have to see if they will grow up here in Pa..I'd put some plants out ..but right now I'd probably be better with lily pads :) Question for ya all...Did ya ever hear of hummers getting tipsy on too much fermentation...??? Someone mentioned it and I thought I'd check that out with all of you.. Ok.. it's bed time and I'm cranking up the electric blanket that's how chilly it is..well damp and chilly.. Oh no, Chris! I'd be substantially more than p---d off (and I suspect you're exercising restraint in your posting)! I was unhappy enough about the rotten woodchuck that devastated my annuals and veggies - if it had touched the daylilies, WWIII would have occurred in my own back yard.

We had a VERY nice Halloween here - it was pretty warm, and mostly dry (a few sprinkles, nothing serious). Our son went as a train engineer, and blew his whistle all around the neighborhood (he's 8, and trains are the passion of his life). Our daughter (4 1/2) went as the Bedtime Fairy (a.k.a. "Mommy doesn't want to waste too much time and money on a costume") - pink footie pj's, fluffy polka-dotted robe, furry slippers, gold tiara, silver wand, pink fairy wings, long blonde ponytails, and a dolly (also with long blonde pony tails). She was adorable, and had a blast.

The weather was so nice yesterday that I did a chunk of yard cleanup. It was VERY relaxing and satisfying.

We've had the most beautiful fall this year! Today it was in the low 60's with a warm breeze. I worked in the garden all afternoon trying to vacuum/mulch leaves for my DL gardens. The job would go much faster if the bottom layer of leaves weren't soaking wet.

No self respecting deer would even think of poking it's head out into the open...hunting season started last weekend. Several trucks filled with hunters wearing blaze orange hats and coats went by our house looking for a place to park and hunt. My horses are wearing blaze orange vests and halters...don't want to take any chances. I thought I was done planting for the year but just had to order 'Snowdrop' bulbs yesterday.

It's been such a yucko day, I didn't even feel like posting. I'm having the same weather as Janet and the only reason it warms up around here this fall is so it can rain again, followed by below normal temps. Fall clean up has been very slow and I probably won't get all of it done. The sun is supposed to shine (and who trusts the weatherman) for the next few days but be very cold. The other big offender this fall has been the wind. Is everyone else having 30-40 mph winds all the time. I hope my neighbors are enjoying me leaves.

We have had some beautiful weather! 60 degree days, but the evenings are getting much colder! Had our second hard freeze last night. Wish I didn't have to work during the day! Has been very windy here as well. Maybe it will be nice this weekend and I can get more work done!
I quit planting daylily seedlings I needed to get into the ground cuz of the DEER! They trompled right through what I had planted. The soil was pretty damp from the last rain we had so when they stepped through, my seedlings got planted even deeper into the ground! I did not have a problem pulling them back up even with soil line and filling in hoof holes with dirt, so I sure hope they will make it! I unrolled some chicken wire I had nearby to hopefully change their path! Will have to go see if that has worked or not!
