Fall Garden Close-Ups - pictures, for fun

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to share some pictures from my garden, close-ups of the season's changes. I love the details of plants viewed up close - probably why I enjoy the innumerable variations in daylilies!

One of the few peonies I have that fades gracefully in the fall - 'Phillippe Rivoire.'

Rose 'Betty Prior,' sheltered by the house, might bloom into December in a mild year.

Rose 'Othello' - the most VICIOUSLY THORNY plant I grow, but the flowers smell like heaven on earth.

Laurel, Thanks for posting all the close-up pics. Everytime I see a photo of toad lilies, I tell myself I've got to get some. I haven't yet, but they are on my list.

gldno1 - unfortunately the tree peony blooms seem to be short lived like herbaceous peonies. This is my first tree peony, though, so I am certainly not an authority on the subject. I am looking forward to seeing the branch structure of the plant develop and to see what it looks like over the winter. trailrunner - thanks!

tidying up the fall garden - question:

Cutting lilies for vases, etc. does not weaken the bulb for the following year. By blooming, it's accomplished what it's supposed to do and by cutting the blooms you're really only preventing the lily from producing seed. Now, cutting down too much of the green stem would impact the bulb. This is not the prettiest time of year for lilies - my foliage is just short of starting to yellow and the temptation is always there to cut them down. But don't do it, you really would be robbing the bulb of what it needs to replenish itself for next season. I've got some Lilium Tigrinum in a bad spot where deer crop the tops off of just about every year if I'm not quick enough with the Liquid Fence. Despite being cropped in their growing stage or just as buds are forming, those lilies keep coming back bigger than before.

Fall/winter raised bed garden picture

The mache is on the right of the picture, and also two rows in the front mixed in with baby carrots and parsnips. In my opinion mache is the best tasting of all the leaf lettuce varieties. A bit like spinach in consistency, but with a fantastic nutty flavor. It's totally winter hardy, and it produces through late spring. I will pick it all winter long. The tall plants in the back row are broccoli, which I got in my garden probably two weeks too late. I don't think the heads will end up well formed. It will be delicious, but I won't get more than a meal or two out of all of it. The kale is divine. I fry up a slice of bacon, then dump a big bunch of kale right in the fat. I cook it down just a bit, put some beer or wine in the pot, and cover and cook till tender. Just a pinch of salt and pepper and it's divine.

You're welcome, everyone! My pleasure. I'm just having TOO much fun with the new camera, with a lot of trial and error and error and error. I love the close details of all plants, but I realize that I need to get more overall photos to help me evaluate my design. Photos can be brutally honest, that's for sure.

We've started looking for a new house and property, officially now. I find that I often look at the LOT before I look at the HOUSE when we drive by something, LOL.
I've got my priorities, yessirree!

Hello Laurel...I've been wanting a Holly bush, I know I could get the male and female at a really good price right now but I think it might be too late for them to get settled in. I love my house, and five acres is just enough for DH and I to keep up but we're always on the lookout for a farm with lots of land for our horses to pasture.

I like the holly - I think I've got a 'Blue Princess' and a 'Blue Prince,' but my memory isn't clear on that, since I bought them at different times and different places. The female holly is VERY vigorous, but the male is quite wimpy - no idea why, they're planted within 10 feet of each other. Oh, well. I think I'd wait until spring to plant shrubs now - winter is just around the corner for us.

There are SO many plants I love in my yard - it will be hard to leave most of them behind. But, I'll take as many daylilies as I can, depending on when we move, and a handful of other favorites. But, plants grow - so even a new yard will look full and established in a few years. While the new garden is small, the little details will be just as interesting.
