The ones I know that WOULD benefit from having free root are the Dioscorea, Gonolobus and Crassula, but a lot depends on your growing conditions. I have most on that list and they are all root bound. Also depends what you want the plant to ultimately look like.

IMO, Pachypodiums always look better rootbound, produces a squat tightly grown plant.

Sansevieria , do better when root bound, it doesn't necessarily change the apprearancae, it does break the pot. Forces new growth faster and flowers. Many may not grow to full size, other will die if the pot is too large. Each species will have special requirements, in any genus. So you need to know the genus, and species. There is not any correct response. Caudex 1 is right and and I would follow her/his advise anytime. By the way a miniature plant will always be a miniature plant, I plant that wants to grow large will find a way to do so, even if it needs to climb out. LOL Norma

and pachy rosulatum should have been pachy densiflorum

i always wonder why people grow their dioscoreas in very shallow pots. i guess i want mine as big as possible. i have them in big/deep pots.

caudex1, you're like the most "expert" guy i know in regards to these plants, so i'm trying to learn all i can. hope you don't mind all my Q's :) i'd rather not learn too many "mistake" lessons on my own, especially when they can be so co$tly...

Me, I'm no expert, I've just made many mistakes and killed many plants over my 20yrs of experience.

If I was into Dioscorea I would bed it out, completely buried for a few years. It would get big relatively fast compared to pot grown plants.

C. sarcocaulis is one that can be over potted or put in the ground to gain size quickly then cut back to shape as desired. Same with bulbosum but over potted, you want to keep the roots.

Pachypodium, underpot every time. Well, maybe not lealli, this one seems to like a larger pot to grow it's best.

I've had it about 1.5 years now. I still don't fully understand it's growing habits. I got it underpotted/rootbound in the spring. It was in full leaf. It flowered late that summer. I brought it indoors last winter, but it had not enough light. I know that now. It lost all it's leaves due to yellowing. Then the new growth branches died back. I thought I was going to lose it. I repotted it into a bigger pot, and let it sit. It was dormant all the rest of winter/spring, and mid this summer it woke up again. Now it is in flower again. So... This guy is typically a winter grower? I want it to get as big as possible, then do a drastic cutback like I mentioned before somewhere.

Next time my dioscoreas put out new growth, I will pot them waaaay up. I'm still on the fence about doing a raised grow bed. In seattle we get lots of winter rain. I would need to cover them so they don't freeze.
