There were flowers as far as I could see, in some areas.

The first one could be Symphyotrichum pilosum (Frost Aster). A few of those are still blooming in south-central Arkansas.

I always wish I lived in the hill country this time of year!! When I was a kid Ladybird Johnson started a program to re-introduce these beauties back to the roadsides. You could pick-up biodegradable seed packets everywhere for free and toss them out of you car window. I'd say it was a great success! Common name is from its affinity for the shade of "cedar" trees. It's a good shade/understory plant. Ours is growing under a dwarf peach. The following NPSOT article provides more background. Yes, indeed! It IS purple prairie paintbrush! I was born here and have spent all my life here and just haven't even seen/noticed this wildflower. Glad it's native. This particular patch has a really pink color, but the description says the color varies. Thank you so much for solving a mystery. And welcome to Texas! :-)

They bloom all over the state, blooming from South to North. The drive I took was from San Antonio to Brownsville. Brownsville is at the very tip of TX.

I tell my husband that if we had some land out in the country I would buy wildflower seeds and throw them all over the fields.

Our wildflower season still hasn't really kicked in to high gear up here. I'm hoping it will be a good one with all the moisture we had last winter. (Surely there will be that silver lining to all that snow and ice!)
