That's awesome Mike!! Congrats on your very nice Desert Rose!

Keep in mind that I'm a "whacker" by nature and love to prune plants,lol...I can't tell you when the best time to prune yours(but guessing in the early spring?) since here in FL I can usually prune them just about any time of the year (except maybe Jan. & Feb). I do know with mine they take very well to pruning, so I would say you can cut it and shape it just about anywhere you like, depending on the shape and size you want to achieve. It will send out a few branches and leaves(even blooms) where you cut them, grows somewhat similar to Jades.

I don't want to give you the wrong advise so I will let the ones that grow them in your zone give you more specific suggestions and advise. Good luck growing it, you will love it!

Hi Mike, we need Marie (Ltran54) from Houston, TX to see this thread. I believe she over winters her Adeniums in the garage. I know her weather is not nearly as cold as yours...but, maybe she will see this thread and give you some advise and tips.

However (if this is Desert Rose), I recently saw some planted outdoors in NYC outside a concert hall. Kept meaning to take pix & post here to ask.

Just today I passed them on my way to the office & see those planters have been swapped out w/ some kind of evergreen.

Hi Mike, what a wonderful early Christmas present? I didn't have a chance to read forum during the weekend. Congrats on your plant, and I hope it gives you a full head of blooms next summer. I live in Houston Texas and I prune my plants only once per year at the beginning of growing season (like in late April) when they ready to go outside from my garage to the back yard for full sun. When you prune it, try not to let water touch the cut for 2 to 3 days afterward.

Great Plant! I didn't know you and mom were wanting to try this one. :)
I'm fairly new with growing them as you know. The one I told you was not doing well after transplanting, has perked back up.

Aird lands told me they will start to go dormant soon. So I would wait till spring in your cold corner of the world to prune.

Another place (cactus nursery) told me it's time to bring them in for the winter or give them a green house.

He also said the one in the house may grow year round, with just a little slowing down, but I did'nt think to ask him about time of year to prune.

That's a nice plant, alright!
Sure, I can make some pruning suggestions, but I have a feeling it's best to wait until Spring
to make the actual cuts. Autumn is a good time to make plans for the following year.... ;)

I am new to this side of the forum, and I am very excited to get to know all of you!! Mike has been a great friend on the Plumeria forum and we have had a great time learning how to keep our Plumerias happy and healthy!! Thank You for inviting me over to this side of the forum!!!

My collection of C & S are limited to DR's Agaves, Aloes and some CHristmas cactus...tomorrow, I will post pictures of some of my limited collection...I will admit that I am a Plumeriaholic...and have the natural ability to become addicted to the Jades and other C&S LOL...so hopefully when I go through "withdrawals" you all can help advise this newbie with your helpful advice!!!

Mike...about the trimming of the DR...I have trimmed mine back in the spring...and Itran54 has given me great advice before on the P forum. I have never seen a collection like hers before...Very impressive!!!

Mike...I found a picture of your new DR from the summer.
Now you can see what it will look like this summer as well.
You can see how much it has grown since then...I would probably trim the large four branches by half...that's just my 2 cents...you do what feels right for you. I was nervous about cutting mine this spring LOL...tha't probably why they are a little long...

Laura..It grew FAST! In one summer? You must of been doing something right with it..I am so excited as well as my mother..That is the exact color of flower she wanted too..It is so beautiful...Putting this picture here was very thoughtful..Thank you..
Your 2 cents is worth much more than that as is everyone else here..
The sentiments here run the same with trimming in the spring, which I will do..
Right now it is in the basement under a little window where the temps hover in the low 60's and daylight is very short..I plan on watering only once a month..The soil is already very dry, but if this is ok, so be it..
If you or anyone think this is not a good idea, please let me know..
