because this crazy old lady steals their bags of leaves.

I heard my across the street neighbor mowing today. I went over and asked for the bags of leaves he was mulching. He was so nice. He helped me carry the bags across and then when he was finished he brought another 3 or 4 bags over.

Now there is a lady that calls me when anyone has bags of leaves. She is a widow just hanging on, by the looks of the house and yard.

You know the Lord puts us where he wants us. I feel very strongly that this is where I belong. I am so glad I decided to move.

Kathy, I'm smiling this morning while reading your words.
Partly because I've "been there" with neighbors and leaves, and partly because
people told me I was crazy to leave a comfortable, secure life in Ohio.
I too feel very strongly that this (Massachusetts) is where I belong
and I'M GLAD I DECIDED TO MOVE TOO!!!

Yes , blooming where planted is a great saying! I am so glad my DH chose this house and went with his gut feeling and bought it unbeknownst to me ! I am called the raking queen as I am the only person who actually gets out there and rakes and bags the leaves. I unfortunately didn't get the shredder and have been donating them to a friend who grows produce for my son's restaurant. Next year for sure ...I am happy for you both too ! c

Karen and all, Costco sells containers of cookies, (good to have with all the extra milk needed to drink to get the containers) that are great for winter sowing, also the mixed green salad containers are perfect for winter sowing also. Alberta They changed the cookie container no good now..but the Ruglah one is the same and from the service deli:any and all..but esp the soup chicken and Caesar salads containers .(I work in this dept at costco, And the containers that grapes,berries and salad greens come is are good to. So have a party and shop at costco for it lol...

"This would be the fault of the original designer who might not have cared about a dry basement." It would more likely be the fault of subsequent owners who made chages to the grade or the roof drainage. The water is coming from somewhere. Often your own common sense will show you where. The first steps are yours. Go outside and walk around your house to see if there is anything obvious. Look at the roof line. Are the gutters properly sized, clean and well-maintained. Do the downspouts take the water a couple of feet away from the house? Do the same walk around in the rain, the longer and harder the rain, the better. Watch for damp-looking areas on the surface of the house. When the basement gets damp, is the wind blowing in a particular direction? This may give you a clue where to look. When you are through looking up, go around looking down. Does the ground slope away from the house all the way around the house. If there is paving, does it drain toward or away from the house? Are there plantings (shrubs, trees, etc.) near the house that may allow roots to penetrate the foundation? Do you have close neighbours who may have changed the ground contours since the house was built, directing water toward your property? Do you know the soil and subsoil types? Some soils and subsoils get saturated more easily than others. Are you on city water and drains? The only time our previous house had water in the basement was when the city waste drains couldn't handle the flow and backed up. Assess and correct the outside, before even considering the inside of the basement. You eventually may have to put a membrane around the foundation, but if you can keep surface water directed away from the house, it may not be necessary.

Hi, Calibean! Beautiful table! IMHO, I'm not seeing those chairs as being your best choice either. And the original ones you wanted with the nailhead trim would likely be a cleaning nightmare if your kids are as messy as you describe. I think if I were you, I'd keep a watch on CL for chairs where you might find a great deal. In this economy, I'm always a little reticent to advise someone to spend much money if DH doesn't agree. Sometimes they're truly worried about how to keep the family budget fiscally sound. So first of all make sure you're both on the same page there. Perhaps using the dining chairs even longterm isn't such a bad idea. Many homes now only have one eating area (at least out west where I live) even in the 2400 sf range. Perhaps we're more casual than other parts of the country. Good luck with your choice! Speaking as an *almost* professional 2nd hand shopper, that chandy is a super bargain and I'd have snapped it up in a second. If anyone worries about their DH thinking they are crazy be assured that most men are on a different wave length than women when it comes to home decor. Compare to what many DH's buy in the way of car or tool thingies. Sometimes mine buys something that's a "must have" and it sits for the next millenium still in the package. But he had to have it, usually "just in case". Go figure. Think of something useless your DH bot and play a little fun comparison game with him. Or just ignore and he'll get over it when you hang it and everyone else oohs and aahs.

Kathy ~ I am so glad you are feeling great about your move. It sounds like you have some nice neighbors as well. It's great to get free bags of leaves to help with your gardens.

A young lady that is like a daughter to me came by today. I was telling my leaves tale. She said, "you want leaves?". She will bring me all her son gets while doing yards.
I have created a monster here. A "bag lady" for sure!!!!!

Caroline, some are shredded and some are not. I just pile them on top of cardboard. By spring most will be decomposed and the grass will be dead.

Did I tell y'all about my $17 Christmas tree? Walgreen's had their trees on for half price and with my employee/retiree discount I paid $17 for a 61/2 ft. pre-lite tree. I called my DIL to see if the church is ready for a new one yet. I was going to buy one to donate. She said the church's is fine, but would I get her one. Especially since my son thinks very un-Christmas thoughts each time he has to put the lights on theirs.

We all covet a fresh tree, but after seeing one go up in flames, we all buy artifical now.

Kathy, I'm so glad your new home is meeting all your expectations and having great neighbors makes all the difference in the world.
We keep all the leaves that are raked, blown or sucked up around our yard. Some go in the compost, some are blown off the gravel and down around the Rhodos and other shrubs where they are allowed to compost down naturally, been doing this for a few years now. The soil is actually starting to look pretty good where we have done this.
Congrats on the great buy, $17 for a pre-lite 61/2 tree is a real steal.

The water oak leaves never break down as far as I can tell . They are the toughest little ^&*()$% I have ever seen LOL. I will try that with the staking on thick newspaper and see what happens. I have lots of it . c

The fellow who mowed for me, at the old house, told his brother I wanted leaves. Yesterday he arrived with 19 HUGE bags leaves. They were so finely mulched that it already looks like compost. We covered a large area of grass with about a foot deep. Die grass, die!
It seems he will bring bags every Friday. What a deal!!!!!

You are on a roll! A great deal on a Christmas tree, bags of leaves coming your way, and now finely chopped bags of leaves!!

I save leaves too, but wish I could get them as finely chopped as the ones coming your way. Your beds are going to be spectacular.

I shred my water oak leaves, put them in black contractors bags with a little alfalfa meal and some water (in layers) then throw it in the wayback of the yard for a year. It's scrumptious when it's done!
