Metasequoia glyptostroboides 'Goldrush'

I understand this selection is too recent to have any conclusive references on adult size. Doing a Web search I find quotes going from 5 m. to the same size as the species.

Those of you growing it, does it grow as fast as the species?, any examples of size vs. age?

Also, do you grow it in full sun?

Mine is in 5 hours of sun a day. The first year it will burn. Second year recovered quite nicely.

I have one its not as fast as the true Metasequoia
glyptostroboides about 18in 45cm a year also have
Metasequoia glyptostroboides'white spot'a nice form.

The largest cypress I've ever visited was the late, great Senator Cypress in Sanford, FL. It caught on fire and burned down some years ago. The story about how the fire started absolutely infuriates me and I won't go into it here. Volume should be the measuring stick for the conifers. In terms of volume, the Senator clearly exceeded the other well known bald cypresses in the South, including the Tennessee Titan. I have up close up photos of the Titan and have no doubt about this. The Titan was still a wonderful tree. The Cat Island, LA trees, which I have visited numerous times, are indeed huge at the base with a very quick taper. IMO, there are several cypress trees at Cat Island that are more impressive than the national champ, which I still suspect is two trees grown together, despite DNA evidence that apparently suggests otherwise. One of my favorite cypresses for form is the former Mississippi champion at Sky Lake WMA in west central Mississippi. The current Mississippi champion is located within 100 yards of the former champion. I have not visited the Arkansas champ yet, but from the photos I have it looks very impressive for form.

Hey! It grows just as fast as the species. Tighter needles. Needle color is slightly lighter then the species as well. Upright form. Bark breaks up into small dark brown/black flakey ridges.. Sorry about the picture quality. Jeff

Lots of bare fields this year in Illinois. I saw one corn field last week and the corn was only about 6" tall. This is the first year in my 66 years that the corn hasn't been "knee high by the 4th of July". It's usually about 6 feet tall by now.

It is one of the faster growing plants I have and it has done great in 3/4 day of sun in the Cincinnati Ohio area. I would think that it would be much larger that 15M, Maybe 2/3 to 3/4 species size. For a yellow plant it has good vigor. David

It's a beautiful plant, graceful. You'll need to label it as Metasequoia gly. 'Ogon', however.

I agree it is a beautiful plant, that's why I got it ;o))

Thanks all for the tips; just one more question about watering, does it require wet feet all the time?, will planting it in a drier spot slow down growth?

Hi Gomero,

It doesn't require wet feet, but does prefer it; growth on a dry site is slower

Interesting note, I just looked at my 'Gold Rush' to see how much damage it has after 3 nights of low 20's as it had started to push, about 1 cm. To my surprise it looks OK but the Spring Cream planted Next to it looks bad. David

Haven't checked my one-foot, one-branch 'Spring Cream' but noticed my 20 foot species hasn't been harmed. I haven't looked at anything else though. Spring weather can zap a confused bugger.

Remember, labeling is important. 'Ogon'. I realize you got that though Gomero.

My Dawn redwoods are now leafing out but my Taxodium
distichum is still naked but not my T mucronatum.

I live in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I planted both Ogon and the species in similar locations in my yard about three years ago. Much to my surprise, my Ogon has been growing at about 2.5-3 feet/year--as fast or faster than the species.
