Lurker here,

I found this article and wondered if anyone else has their special formula for getting the best out of their dahlias:

"Mr Chambers has a few special tips for growing dahlias.

To harden dahlia stems he uses Sulphate of Potash, and to give vibrant colours a mixture of Iron and Magnesia. He also recommends Nitro Phoska Blue Special as an excellent dahlia food.

Dahlias prefer the ph level in the soil to be 6.5-7.0 with plenty of water and like to be removed from the ground during winter so the ground can be prepared with plenty of manure and food for next season.

Mr Chambers said his garden is elevated and not often susceptible to hard frosts, so he is able to lay his tubers in a shallow trench and cover them with mounds of earth similar to planting potatoes.

During the summer he protects his show-quality blooms from the bleaching effects of the sun and morning dew by covering them with large umbrellas.

As a judge, Mr Chambers has a wealth of knowledge of what it takes to turn an average garden variety dahlia into a prize-winning bloom.

As well as protecting the blooms from the intense Canterbury sunlight, he recommends removing side buds, similar to removing laterals on a tomato plant to concentrate all growth to the single flower.

According to Mr Chambers, the one thing that has eluded dahlia and gladioli growers over the years is the ability to produce a genuine blue flower.

He said anyone who was able to grow such a flower would be forever famous in the dahlia world and very rich.

...

Mr Chambers intends to quietly delegate some of his judging and administrative commitments to others over the next two years, but he was happy to share his recipe for keeping dahlias happy and healthy.

24 kg blood and bone

12 kg super phosphate

8 kg sulphate of potash

4 kg iron

4 kg magnesia

2 kg basic slag

Sprinkle a small amount around the bottom of each plant."
