Too late to start old ones inside?

Yeesh: I STILL have not taken last years' dahlias out of the refrigerator crisper. The new ones I bought have been potted up a while now, and most have done really well (no sign of Chat Noir: those darn black cats!), with 6-8 pairs of leaves so far.

Since I'm not too sure if I divided properly (could not see any eyes) should I just go ahead and toss them in the ground, or will it still give them a head start in the warmth department if I started them in trays/baggies of soil first? I'm not sure which is more of a time consumer: digging holes for things, some of which won't grow, or pre-starting things some of which won't grow.
