Snowy Day (1 Pic)

This is the view looking back to my barn today. I took the picture standing in my slippers in my new little greenhouse (woo, woo!)

We are trying to decide if we are to the point where we are guaranteed a white Christmas, or if the weather switch might flip in the opposite direction in time to melt all the snow. Not too many years ago it would not even be a question, but we've been getting some weird warm spells during the last few winters.

Our local small town had their annual holiday open house last night, and it was festive to go from store to store in the snow getting free eats and drinks. And I do mean drinks. One of the Real Estate Agencies was pouring Champagne, which is pretty amazing considering the tough time for real estate lately. We also sampled some hot chocolate with peppermint schnapps and nibbled on assorted sweet tidbits.

I also bought a pair of new boots and then was teased by a friend who saw my shopping bag and said I looked like an out-of-towner who actually came to buy something, instead of just for scarfing up the free stuff. So DW said she would carry the bag. :-)

Ohh, I know we *itch about the snow, but that sure is pretty. And from your greenhouse, in your slippers. Serious Canadian envy here!!
Maybe the merchants would rather spend what they have, then lose it to taxes, banks., etc!!! Good for them for starting the holiday cheer or (cheers).

What a wonderful "picture postcard" . You do have the knack for great photos. And in the greenhouse...you are trying to make us jealous ! So I will tell you it was 63 here today...nah nah...:)

Kitha - In order to get a picture to show up in your message, you first have to have it stored on a web server somewhere. PhotoBucket is a popular free web server for storing pictures. Second, you have to type a link, in HTML code, in your message. If you use PhotoBucket, they have this all worked out for you, and you can just copy the code they show you right into your message. For more details, see the Gallery Forum part of the Cottage Gardens Forum. There is a message there called "Instructions for posting pics, thumbnails and imbedded links" That should help a lot. Julia Mariska seems to be doing ok, her substance on her flowers is thin, though. A little bit of water and she melts away, and starts to melt away in the afternoon. Stormy Monday made it through the winter great. Most of my daylilies were new last year, with a few new ones this year, and most made it through the winter with no problems. I lost a couple and a few struggled to get going this spring, but Stormy Monday had no problems at all. Sharons2 I have both Dragon's Eye and Little Red Dragon, and to be honest, I don't see much difference between the two flowers. Both are too new for me to judge quite yet, but I think Dragon's Eye puts out more blooms. They both look great to me, but I actually prefer Dragon's Eye. Yeh I have probably over 100 potted plants this year. Im still not sure if I will let the big yuccas die, but if I do sometimes I take off the heads and root them. They root really easily. The yuccas came from Home Depot and the tall one was 30 dollars and the small one 20 something so they werent too expensive for their size. I wish I could take all my plants in, but I only have room for the more expensive ones, or the harder to find ones. The good thing about cannas and elephant ears though is they dont take up any room when you store the bulbs.

They are usually called "big round" bales. We used to bale this way, but we have gone to "big square" bales, as they are easier to stack high. We also bale regular square bales - those are the smaller ones that you can pick up by hand. My 16 year old DD does the small square baling! We also bale brome hay. When it is cut is called "swathing" or "mowing". It is layed in "windrows" by the swather. The baler moves over these and rolls it up into bales, or packs it into squares. In our big square bales, the hay is actually cut into small pieces as it is baled up. That way we can break the bale open and put it in a feed mixer wagon with corn, corn silage, and protein, to make a "ration" to feed cattle with. We also bale some alfalfa. You get several "cuttings" from alfalfa. Alfalfa is a high protein hay. It is usually a 99% guarantee that if you have hay down - it will rain, LOL! If it rains on it or it is very damp out, we "rake" the hay. It rolls the windrows over so they can dry better. I rake hay sometimes.

Beautiful snowy photo! I'd love to play in that snow!

We've not had a good snow in years. Just a dusting last January. Of course, there have been a few 12-24 inch deep snows around here in the last 10 years.

Picture postcard is right, another great photo TM, no snow here yet in fact the last few days have been quite mild. It can stay like this all winter as far as I'm concerned.

A beautiful picture! The yellow barn just looks wonderful in the snow.

I do envy you the little greenhouse. Are you just heating it with the house heating system or do you have something supplemental. I can't remember if you told us or not.

Thanks, my friends. The snow is definitely beautiful, but I wouldn't be unhappy if winter had waited a while longer to show up.

Sixty three, or even just mild, sounds good to me, Caroline and Annette.

Glenda, I'm not heating the greenhouse at all right now, and it was about 32 F inside when I stepped out into it to take the picture yesterday. I probably won't put any plants in there until sometime in March, when I hope I can count on some solar heating.

Nancy, yes sometimes we do get winter kill, the worst is when it is so mild right into January and February things start to bud up, then, we get a freeze usually the end of Jan beginning of Feb which lasts a week or so. I lost a Wisteria to this years ago and the mature Wisteria I have now has almost bit the dust twice. Most years the wet accounts for some losses, due to climate change our winters are as a rule are very wet now and things just rot. Snow coverage is a good thing for the garden but the older I get the more I dream of a green winter.

Annette...come on down....we have a green winter ! It was 37 when I headed out on my bike to ride to the next town to get my haircut. It is 57 now. Beautiful and sunny.

TM once again I can't stop looking at the beautiful picture. My SIL is in Central Ohio and she said they are really gettig a lot of cold and snow there too. She hates it. c

TMan ~ That picture is beautiful! So serene and quiet. How neat that you were in your newly built greenhouse taking that picture.

It is 73 down here and tomorrow it is supposed to be around 80. At least it's not hot and humid like summer.

Looking at that beautiful picture make my toes cold. I would definitely parish in that climate.

What is the temperature variance in the greenhouse compared to the outside?

Edna, so far what I've seen is that with sunshine, it has reached 60 inside when it was 30 outside. When it's cloudy, it might be only 10 degrees warmer in there. I'm wondering if the ground is going to freeze in there as the winter goes on. I think it will, but it probably depends on how many sunny days we have. Usually December here is very cloudy, but January and February have some sunny days.

Speaking of toes, mine are a little cold right now, and I've been inside for hours.

Thanks, FlowerLady, and Schoolhouse. 80 F sounds great to me right now. In fact, DW had a sudden urge today to get on the computer and try to find deals for a mid-February getaway to Orlando. She usually gets these ideas and then talks me into them, so we will probably end up going.

That is one beautiful pic.
I love to look at snow, but I sure don't want to be out in it.

This "Magnolia" prefers our mild winters. It has been in the high 20's at night, but up to 60 during the day.
But you never know here. Next week it could be 85.
