Hand pollinating, saving male flowers
Comments (6)Look up some of the recent threads which discuss this question. I have never tried to save pollen, but recall that someone mentioned that it can be refrigerated, perhaps for 24 hours? Personally, I'd have to be pretty desperate to do that. Every spring and early summer there are a number of us who get worried about squash pollination. Sure, there are cases in which there is a lack of pollinators. But more often than not, it's the normal thing of squash plants aborting young fruit & flowers because they are not ready to mature them. But, you can still hand pollinate if you would like. If they are not ready the plants will probably abort, just as they would have otherwise. George Tahlequah, OK...See MoreBuds on Meyer rarely set, do I need to hand pollinate?
Comments (4)My meyer had a small bloom about a month ago while in the greenhouse. I knew there would be no pollinators in there so I hand pollinated with my finger. Comments (4)If you know the cultivar we might be able to tell. I think the viet white jania are self but all the rest aren't. I was always told to hand pollenate anyway if you want fruit production as it yields the best results....See MoreHand pollination?
Comments (5)It's forever hot and humid in where I live, so I guess i'll shake them more. *** How hot and how humid? How about just a gardening zone for us to understand your problem if you don't want to give a general geographic area? I'm not being difficult, trust me, but if the temps are too high for too long and/or the humidity is too high for too long then the pollen is not effective, it's been destroyed, and no amount of shaking the plants is going to lead to fruit set. If you go to the FAQ link at the top of this first page and click on it and then scroll down to Blossom Drop I think you'll see what I mean. And high humidity clumps the pollen making pollenization dicey as well. Carolyn...See Morefireweed22
