Hand pollination?

I noticed out of three flowers only one bore fruit. Maybe it needs some hand pollination.

no bees up on the 14th floor :(

But I noticed the flowers are closed, so I wonder how do I pollinate anyway?

Hand pollination is necessary with plants that have a male and female flower like squash, cucumbers etc. This method is needed if growing vegetables indoors or in a controlled environment like a greenhouse.

Some plants need less help than others to pollinate indoors. All that is needed to help pepper and tomato plants is to gently shake the plant every couple of days to advance pollination. Some self pollinators like peas, beans and lettuce do not need any help to pollinate indoors.

I assume on an outside balcony. And if sheltered from the wind do shake the plants a couple of times each day when the buds are about to open.

rj has given you some good advice. I'll just add that tomatoes self pollenize most of the time and no insect pollinators are needed.

It would also help to know what garden zone you're in to be sure that the temps are not too high that what you're seeing is blossom drop due to temps alone, or perhaps in combination with high humidity which clumps pollen and makes it less effective.

anything can be pollinated .... the issue is whether what you start with is sterile or not .... a lot of the named varieties .. of anything .. end up being sterile.. so no matter what you do.. you wont end up with seed ... if you are just using free range .. self gathered seed .. then odds are they are not at the end of the fertility spectrum.. and can be pollinated ... so.. speaking of zen.. BE THE BEE .... lol .. and research when the pollen is most mature.. and when the female part is most receptive ... ya know.. it always helps when the pollen is actually useful ... been there.. wasted a lot of time with useless stuff.. [wasted a lot of time pollinating hosta AFTER WORK .. only to find out.. its best used.. or stored.. near dawn .. or as soon as the flower opens [which was when i was on the way to work] ... schmuck .. lol ] sorry.. i dont know the specific answer to cosmos though. sooo what are you starting with???? ken

Roger, the only photo I can see is your Oct 25th, right after pollination. It looks normal. Soon a small cap will fall off leaving the fruit-to-be on a green pedicel. It doesn't look like a fruit, but it will enlarge. If not successful, the pedicel turns black and drops off. It can take weeks for the fruit to start growiing. I've done it several times in Riverview, Florida. I have some hanging on now that have not enlarged yet but the fact that they have not dropped off by weeks end is promising. We have no natural pollinators here so get the camel hair brush ready. Freshly dropped pollen is best, but it can be dried and stored. You can even carefully snip away the petal tips go gain access to the stigmas, with should be sticky when receptive. Where are you growing?

Whoa. This is VERY curious. If I change my bookmarks to gardenweb.com, I now go to Gardenweb, and stay there when I select forums and threads. In fact, having done that, I no longer get flung to Houzz at all. That is, everything just changed. The flinging has stopped! Houzz must have gotten tired of all that flinging. Now being able to actually go to a Gardenweb thread, and seeing locations there is nice. But when I'm there, and look at my Settings, they are Houzz settings, and don't include a location field. In those settings, I just put my name in "First Name" and my location in "Last Name". Boy, pepper pollination is easy compared to this! Thanks for your patience.

Applying the pollen anywhere on the silk if fine. If your corn is planted in a block of rows then just hand pollinating the outside stalks helps those ears along. But for one row of corn (like the row along my pea trellis) I snip off a portion of the tassel and tap it over the fresh silks like tapping ashes off of a cigarette. I do this each morning and again each evening when there is usually no breeze. Like you I also leave the used tassel wedged into the leaf joint just above the ears. Sometimes a rogue tassel grows from the side shoots/suckers and I'll use those for their pollen too. Once the silks turn rusty looking the pollination process should be complete. I'll tie a ribbon or string around the very first stalk that has ears showing silk, these ears should ripen up first so I can judge the others for harvest timing.

It's forever hot and humid in where I live, so I guess i'll shake them more.

P.S It's very windy up there so which is why I wonder why there's only one tomato out of 7 flowers.

How hot and how humid? How about just a gardening zone for us to understand your problem if you don't want to give a general geographic area?

I'm not being difficult, trust me, but if the temps are too high for too long and/or the humidity is too high for too long then the pollen is not effective, it's been destroyed, and no amount of shaking the plants is going to lead to fruit set.

If you go to the FAQ link at the top of this first page and click on it and then scroll down to Blossom Drop I think you'll see what I mean.

And high humidity clumps the pollen making pollenization dicey as well.
