Obviously, everyone has been very busy, but I thought it might be a good idea for some of us to air it out a bit.

My grandmother died last week. This will definitely make the holidays a somber affair for my family. She also happened to be the only Grandma Benjamin ever had, as both our mothers passed away before he was born. I had a hard time telling him.

Plus, my mind is now focused on my grandpa, who was married to her for 64 years. I can only imagine the heartache.

The weather(as we all know) has been horrendous. I am constantly worried about Nan, who has a LONG drive to work. I am also a snow plow guy, so I am out at all hours of the night/day dealing with this stuff.

I never really did get the garden 100% winterized. Late fall + sudden onset of nasty weather left me with little time. There are all sorts of things I would normally cut down/trim/remove now sitting under a blanket of snow and ice. I'm sure it will be just fine come spring, but I don't like leaving things undone.

I am just about done with my Christmas shopping. Just need to pick up a few more stocking stuffers for Nan.

I notice Vikki got my card. I sent them out on Saturday, so the rest of you should be getting them shortly. I received my first card yesterday(Thanks Annette!) I figured a little humor could do us all some good.

Oh Mr M, I'm so sad to hear about your Grandmother, special hugs for your Grandpa and wee Ben. I'm a one finger typer so I'm not good at the journal stuff but your post touched my heart, tell Nan to drive safely and take special care of yourselves, Martha

Sorry to hear of your Grandmother's passing. Death in the family is never easy and more difficult at this time of year.

You folks are really getting some awful weather. We down here in the south, on the other hand, we've had it easy so far. We've had spring like weather for the last few days and I've toted my 6 to 8 non-cold hardy plants out of the garage to get a good dose of sun and warmth. The lavender I grew in a container this summer is STILL blooming. Never thought I could grow lavender in this humid area but it has been a pleasant surprise. I have some Diamond Frost Euphorbia that I want to dig up and winter over in the garage and once that's done I'm finished in the garden for this season (ha, ha...believe that?). I planted lettuce for the first time this year, in containers on the deck. I'm growing Red Sails, Bib and Romaine from starts I got at the local hardward store. I think the seed I planted is called Looseleaf Simpson Black Lettuce. Its been fun to step out on the deck and snip some fresh lettuce leaves for a dinner salad.

I finished my Christmas shopping today, whew! Glad that's over. Its such a blessing to be retired and be able to go to the stores while everyone else is at work. I can sure remember fighting the traffic and crowds on the weekends trying to get everything done on time. Next comes the wrapping and deciding what the menu will be for Christmas dinner.

Both you and Nan be sure to drive carefully in the messy weather. Wishing you and your family a wonderful Christmas.

It is the type of cold where snow doesn't fall as snow, but as tiny balls or flakes of ice. It's the third day of bitter cold, and this old house, three runs of brick thick, holds it's warmth for a while and then starts to cool off by the third day of cold. Then no matter how you heat it, the cold eminates from the walls. We've reached that point, and I wore a toboggan to bed last night. LOL. I have checked the hen house early these days, as I worry for the fowl, although I've lain hay in their coop heavily. The water bowls were frozen this morning and I've increased their rations of corn for the calories. Two solitary eggs lay in their nest boxes, a couple of brave hens abandoned them to the freeze and never bothered to sit them. The husband suggested flap jacks for supper, so I fried up a skillet of potatoes, and served them up with Canadian bacon as sides. I found a cache of the bacon half price, and scooped up enough for four meals. It's a little luxury I haven't bought in years and puts me in mind of the bacon I ate as a child. The litte tree went up yesterday and it got decorated today between jobs and is cheerful and simple. The creche went over the new kitchen fireplace mantel, and the last touches of some fir boughs comes tomorrow. As the old saw goes, sometimes less is more. My tom cat is sitting on the quilt I'd thrown over the dining room table, hoping to get some more quilting done on it today. Didn't happen. I'd like it done by Christmas, but I am not betting on it. Next week in the greenhouses shall be grueling, and before the you know what hits the fan, I'd like to get my plum pudding made. I didn't do one last year, and something seemed very missing, if you know what I mean. I guess the Christmas spirit finally started to hit me. I've always heard it told that you advise depressed people to act happy, and it fools the body into becoming happy........chicken and egg analogy. Well, I guess the same thing holds for the Christmas spirit. I went through the motions and now am feeling it a little.

I agree Meldy; as I had the same thought. I know I need to shed some titles every now and again, and choosing those is not always easy. ;) Journal December 7-9, 2009 It was my last living grandparent's graduation ceremony this weekend. My mother's mother. She too, had many titles. We called her mother, grandmother, GranMrs., pussycat, Aunt Dotie, Dot, sister, prayer warrior, friend and many others. She lived 92 years and they were all (even during the depression!) spent with happiness, joy, and with anticipation of going to heaven. She, like I am, is a chrisitian. Those of us who attended Gran's funeral knew where she was, and what was going on. We didn't cry the sobbing hopeless tears of only a loss, we were all overjoyed that she was having her homecoming party with her husband who died 6 years ago (that's been the hardest part for me, because I knew how much she was missing him and they couldn't be together all these years. She was really sad!), her brothers and sisters, even my dad's mother (that one hit me hard, the two gigglers smiling down on us). We knew, and we were cheered to know it. When they moved Gran to a nursing home from the assisted living place a few months ago, she wasn't allowed to have anything that didn't fit on her nightstand. No pictures, no nothing. It bothered me. But really, she wouldn't have noticed; she has been a shell for far too long. If we knew where the item came from, it was given to the person who gave it. I got back my anniversary clock I gave to them so many decades ago. I put a battery into it and set it where I could see it every day. I noticed it winding down a month ago, and wanted to put a new battery in it. I thought, hm, it hasn't been that long since I put a new one in it. I took it as a sign, and did not put a battery in, so I could see when it would happen, since it was like Gran's heart winding to a stop. And when it fully came to a stop a week ago, I knew what was about to happen. She's "been dying" for years, and yet, I knew. Mom called at 3:22AM on Sunday, and like sissy, I hopped out of bed, knowing what the phone call was for. Mommy said Gran had labored breathing and it didn't look good. Although mom would call when she got there, sis and I stayed up waiting. She didn't call again until 7:12AM, saying, they were wrong. She had already died at 2:30AM. I miss you GranMrs, but I know you're happy and in his arms right now.

I swore to myself yesterday that I'd evoke all the power of positive thinking I could muster and this week would be GOOD. I NEED a good week. I DESERVE a good week. I overslept this morning. No big deal in light of last week when nothing went right. Work was a disaster every single day. My Christmas vacation was canceled and I was told I will have to work every single day straight until the 22nd. I barely made it out at night in time for DS's basketball games. Thursday night, I left 10 minutes late and assured him I'd ONLY be 10 minutes late. And I would have only been 8 minutes late if it wasn't for the fact that some idiot ran a red light at 50 mph and creamed me in the middle of a busy intersection and then left. As I was talking to the 911 dispatcher, he came back...he had to drop his buddy's girlfriend off at the mall. I'm afraid to take the truck in for an estimate for fear they'll total it, I LOVE that truck, even if it does legally belong to the XDH. When I finally got the XDH to answer the phone, he gave me a blow-by-blow play of the game as it happened while I dealt with the other driver and the cops. I made it to the game in time to watch the team score the winning basket. As I left the game, I ran out of gas in front of the gas station. Lucky for me, there was a Sheriff Deputy standing by to give me a ticket for driving an "unsafe" vehicle. After explaining what happened (ok, after getting irrate and then explaining what happened...), he let me go with a "you're lucky, this time" warning. On those words, I bought a lottery ticket and went home. Haven't checked the ticket yet, but no one won the big one so no hurry. Friday and Saturday were bitterly cold and I got to work in a building with no heat. One of my employees took pity on me and built me a cardboard igloo and equipped it with a space heater. I'll probably catch on fire in it, but when it was 25 degrees inside, I didn't much care. Saturday morning, a Lieutenant Colonel I befriended a few months ago drove 22 miles to bring me a hot cup of coffee. And I wonder why I do this job? He's getting ready to spend a year in Iraq but still takes time to think of a lowly civil servant. As he got ready to leave, he told me "Maryanne, the one thing that makes you different from anyone else is that you found your calling..." Maybe. Maybe not. Saturday night when I got home from work, all I wanted was a bowl of soup and to curl up on the sofa. The house was a little chilled so I turned up the heat a bit, heated up some soup, threw on my pj's and curled up under my security blanket. Woke up about 2 am freezing to death. Went to turn up the heat...nothing. I had no heat. Not much one can do at 2 am except throw on more clothing and crawl into bed. Thank goodness for down duvet's! Woke up around 8 am Sunday and decided that I wasn't going in to work until the heat was repaired. Tossed a load of laundry in, made some coffee, took a shower (Note: Do not use a hot shower as a means to thaw out if you have no heat. It's twice as cold when you exit the shower!), hung the laundry on the line and started another load. After getting dressed, I called the repair guy and left a message. As I went to get the second load out of the washer, I was greeted with a flooded laundry room. The motor pump decided it was a good time to go out and all that soapy water went all over the floor. It was at this point I sat down and laughed. And laughed. And laughed. When I regained some control, I called the XDH and pleaded for help. He was going to pick up DS from a camping trip with the scouts so we switched...he came and bailed and mopped, I went (in his heated van!) to pick up DS. Of course, DS was an hour late in arriving back. By the time I got home, my dryer was sitting in the driveway and the XDH had his head under the washer. It was then I mentioned that I had no heat either...he wondered why it was so cold but thought maybe I was really turning into an "ice queen". Twit. After condemning the washer motor, he went to work on the heat pump. Seems a bug crawled across the circuits and fried them. And himself. It was 3 pm by the time he found some new fuses and got the system working. We were all starved so I took them out to dinner. It was the least I could do. So, now I have heat but no washing machine or dryer. The Volvo broke down again 2 weeks ago and now the truck is a mess (since the bed of the truck is slightly off kilter, I get to "crab walk" down the highway at 60 mph!). I haven't even begun to do any Christmas shopping, but I did drag DS out to the tree lot last night and told him that come hell or high water, I was going to have a Christmas tree! So we picked out a nice one, drug it home and put the lights on...nothing else. DS will spend Christmas with his father this year. I'll spend Christmas with my head under the covers, shifting position only to refill my mimosa glass. You don't honestly think I'm going to touch the stove, do you? Oh, and I have an $1800 property tax bill due in 2 weeks. Ho Ho Ho. DS said to me last night "Mom, I've been thinking about the Army..." Sweet Mother of God! I held my breath while waiting to hear what he was thinking. "I was wondering...if I joined the Army, would I get to spend more time with you? Or would they deploy me? And if they deployed me, would you deploy with me?" I wasn't sure if that sound I heard was my heart breaking or if my blood pressure spiked and I ruptured a blood vessel, but I did my best to explain to this child that while the Army is an honorable career, I wanted him to go to college and follow his dream of becoming a vet. I apologized for not being able to spend more time with him and promised him I'd work hard to fix this, but sometimes we must make sacrifices for others and that sacrifices such as this are always rewarded in the end. And, of course I'd deploy with him if he deployed! But, we still have 5 more years to figure this out. A lot has changed in the past 5 years, a lot will change in the next 5 years. Especially me. Starting today. I WILL have a good week, even if I oversleep in the morning. At least I left work at a reasonable hour, picked up my child and cooked dinner for him. I got him to scouts, made sure his homework was done, helped him study for mid-terms, and baked brownies for his band party. So what if we're the only house with a dryer in the driveway and a mountain of laundry piled up. So what if the car is broken and the truck is off kilter. Who cares if Christmas will be slim and I have to call the tax assessor and ask for an extention. It will all change. We have each other and nothing can be better. Yeah, it's going to be a GOOD week. I used a sauna once and it was very relaxing. When I came out I felt like a big blob of jello. I am jealous that your house is going so well, but glad for you. Mine has been an adventure in small disasters. Just when I was getting into serious packing took my DH to the hospital with chest pains. (I had never driven over 80mph before!) Not his heart thank God. that set us back a few days but it did give me a little perspective about what was really important. A couple days later a migrain forced me to bed for a day and a half. Then when I really thought we might move it turns out one carpet was back ordered a fact that the carpet guys neglected to tell anyone. GRRRR!! By this time the mover had broken one of our glass collection. (this mover was selected because of his experience with fragile items!) Might be possible to fix this because it was lampworked but have thus far been unable to get ahold of the artist. We had decided to move without the carpet in one room when the rain turned the drive into a morass of mud. The man who was supposed to fix the road had kept putting it off. Now he is putting on more gravel but we put off the move yet agin in fear that the truck would get stuck. Move is now rescheduled yet again for next Mon. I hope we get there before we have to leave for Mex on Dec 27. But the truth is the house is wonderful if we can just get there. Sigh!!

Mr M, I am so sorry to hear about your Grandmother, hugs to all of you. When someone close to you passes I like to think they are always with you, you just can't hear or see them I know for myself this gives some comfort.

Roads can be very tricky to drive in this kind of weather, so both of you be very careful, it's not only how you drive but how the other guy is driving.

I'm afraid my garden has done it's own winterizing this year. The weather has not been cooperating so everything looks very untidy to say the least. The only good thing about this is in the spring when I start cutting and raking it will be like opening Christmas presents that somehow got overlooked. Never know what you're going to find emerging from the debris :o)

I've just about finished my Christmas shopping with the exception of DH and my great granddaughter.
Went looking for an artificial tree for the living room the other day, WELL!!!, that was an experience and a half. I should have realized that this should be done sometime in September when the Christmas stuff seems to start appearing on the shelves around here.
My plans for a tall slim tree were dashed, after going to a number of stores only to find the ones I liked were either all sold out or they never got the ones they advertised in. We ended up at a department store which shall remain nameless.
They had a beautiful display of artificial trees different shapes and sizes. We stood there trying to catch the eye of a sales rep, nothing happened, as we stood there several other couples gathered round looking at the trees. We then noticed several trees had signs on saying sold out. One couple offered up the trees with the sold out signs on were up for grabs just before the store closed Christmas eve.
In the meantime I spotted two trees that didn't have a sold out sign on them. DH spotted a sales rep in the distance and motioned him forward. We asked if he could please tell us if they were still available, he said I'll check. Ten minutes later he came back our way and was about to pass when DH said hey, what did you find out about the trees? His reply, I'm on my coffee break get so and so to help you. I was so proud of DH, he who can be very caustic didn't utter a response, now that I think about it was probably because he was completely flabbergasted and so were the other couples that were standing there.
A few minutes later the young rep came by again, another man not my DH said what's the matter forget where your coffee break is? We were getting nowhere fast and by this time I was determined I was going to have a tree come hell or high water.
In the distance I could see the the lineup at the cash register for this area, after telling DH to stand guard over a tree that was actually larger in diameter than what I was looking for ( I stood there so long, I was beginning to quite like it) I went and stood in line. When it was my turn I asked the young man if he could come and help me. He said with a smile on his face, certainly and away we went. He took down the information, came back in about two minutes saying there were two left, I said one's mine. The other couples had given up and wandered off. I paid for the tree and we brought it home.

We have a small living room so being the tree is wider then I had originally planned to buy I can't fit it in the corner beside the fire place sooo, this year it has to go in front of the windows. It would look better in the opposite corner of the living room but that's another story, maybe next year, to be continued....

Mr. Morton, I am so sorry to hear about your grandmother.

My garden is under a huge blanket of white....hopefully nice and snuggled in for the winter. I'm hoping the mice/voles won't be a problem under the snow this winter.....but who knows. I guess I will find out next spring. I have been spending every spare moment that I have, staring at seed catalogues and planning and trying to decide which new plants I want to try for next spring. I thought I had my mind made up.....but well.....another seed catalogue arrives and I start all over. haha. I think I am getting close to a final decision though.

Very sorry to hear about your Grandmother.

We moved into our new house here in Colorado (from PA) the Monday before Thanksgiving and I think I am finally beginning to feel settled. There are still a few boxes to unpack and a huge pile of packing paper to deal with in the basement but my seeds and my sewing machine are unpacked. :)
I was sad I was not able to participate in the seed swap like I planned but I have enjoyed reading up on it and enjoying everyone else's fun. There is always next year.
I've managed to get a little Christmas decorating done but we don't have a tree yet. Hopefully some time this week that will happen. Then I will take a few pictures. I still need to do some shopping. I want to pick up some small things for my sister's kids. Most years I like to sew something for them but it didn't really work out this year with the move. There will be no visiting family this year either as all my family is east of the Mississippi and most of DH's is too. Our closest family is his mom in Michigan. I will get to see an Uncle I seldom see in January. He has a ski lodge out here somewhere and will give us a call when he is in the area.

Mr Morton I am so sorry to hear of your Grandmother's passing. The memories that you all made together will hopefully carry you all through the holidays.

We don't buy a tree til DD comes home. Usually we go to a lot and see what they have left and make an offer and get a great discount since it is close to Christmas Day.

We don't do gifts anymore as a rule. We love to cook together and sometimes if we see something small we get it for the kids. Usually a book.

My garden is still blomming and all the perennials I planted in May are still green. They didn't get very big due to the drought but they look healthy. I will assume they have great roots and that Spring will bring a good show. I still have lots of things in pots to plant and DH promises we will do it this week now that he is finished for the semester.

I enjoy reading all of your thoughts and plans. c

I'm sorry you're going through this sad time.

I have nothing of interest to report,
unless completely forgetting that the gifts I bought NEED TO BE WRAPPED, counts. ugh!

Mr. Morton, I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope the Holidays will still be enjoyed by your family.

Rick's Aunt Jessie passed away on Monday. We sat with her husband and waited with him. I was so glad that we were able to be with him as he would have otherwise been all alone. Aunt Jessie was 90. They had been married for 68 years. Long time huh?

I didn't cut back anything in my garden. And I love how it looks with all the snow piled on top of everything. My new puppy is making a bit of a mess out there but she'll be big enough to start training in the Spring and there is plenty of room for her to run without running through the flowers. Right now she's so darn cute I can't even get mad at her.

We don't decorate or buy gifts for Christmas any more so I don't have to worry over any of that. It's nice to just sit back and watch the snow fly, bake some cookies or make candy and spend time with family without all the gifts and craziness.

Well, it's been a quiet week in ThinManVille. DW and I have been in our usual routine of watching our grandsons (2.5 year old J and 4 month old R) four days a week. Even though we've seen it before, it's still amazing to see them changing right before our eyes. This week J's preferred method of going in for his nap is to have Grampa be a construction crane and lift him with mechanical robot-like motions and engine noises. R doesn't have a preferred way yet. Just make sure there's a bottle ready for him immediately upon waking, and he's OK with everything else.

We are having a rare moment right now when they are both napping at the same time, and big snowflakes are softly falling outside -- very peaceful. It would be a great day for a fire in the fireplace, but we don't use it when the little guys are around.

I'm one of those curmudgeons that grumps about Christmas displays and Christmas music in the stores and elsewhere way too early, so we don't have a tree up yet. We wouldn't know how to do a theme tree if Martha herself came over to help, so we will have our usual hodgepodge of ornaments collected over forty years. It looks like Christmas to us.

ThinManVille being in northern Michigan, there isn't any actual garden news to report, but I have happily gone through my seed stash from the exchange a couple of times, and the Bluestone spring perennial catalog came yesterday. It gave me an odd feeling to look at it, with winter not even really here yet, and spring something I hardly dare to think of. I think I'll put it away for a couple of months.

My condolences to you, mr. Losing family members is a sad thing that takes a bit out of you that you never get back. Maybe that's why we older folks love our grandkids so much -- they make deposits in our hearts instead of withdrawals.

I've rambled enough for one day.

I have been enjoying checking the mail these days, hoping to find another card from my cottage pals. Thank you Annette, MrM, & Leasa for your cards. They brought a smile to my face. I mailed mine yesterday, after what seemed like a million things went wrong in the process of making them!

I have the house all decorated, the cards are (almost) finished; now I have to start baking cookies. I haven't even figured out what I'll be baking this year. And I only have two weeks left.

It's crunch time, for sure.

Mr. Morton I am so sorry for your loss, but at the same time amazed that people have their grandmothers for so long in their lives. I'm so glad Benjamin is old enough to have sweet memories of his great grandmother which will be comforting to him in years to come - how special to have a great gran! I had lost two grandparents even before I was born.

Life has been slow here as I dropped a christmas tree on my foot about 3 weeks ago and have been hobbling around ever since! It was a BIG tree. Nobody can really tell me what is wrong with the foot - just that it will heal when it is ready. Well, today I AM READY, lol!!

Saturday our house should be finished, (at least the contractors part of the job). I just need to finish painting the upstairs bathroom (hard to paint the ceiling balancing on one foot!!). So we'll be back home for Christmas. I feel bad because I will have to depend totally on DH to bring the stuff over from here to there. There is still a lot of work to do refinishing furniture and toting our stuff back and forth to be recovered, but at least we'll be back in there! So that means we are staying here for the holidays. We normally travel a minimum of 9 hours each holiday, and all that driving is wearing thin on DH. I'm so glad to be at home and to just relax. Hopefully people will begin to come down here to celebrate.

The garden suffers from drought and neglect. This AM I began ripping out some annuals. But I can only fill a yard bag and I'm about done for the day. Leaving things now means they are piling up for spring - I'm gonna be busy!

I hope you are all having a special Advent! One of the things I LOVE about not having to travel is not being under pressure to do all my Christmas preparations during Advent, so I can enjoy.

Oh GGG I'm so sorry to hear that your injury is still not healed, you really must take time to let it do so and not try to do things that can be counter-productive to to a positive result(that is the mum in me laying down the law,LOL
I've just been side-winded tonight by a visit from my eldest son and his family who dropped into the conversation that he is flying to Iceland tomorrow to work on slate roofs for 8 weeks leaving wife and grandchildren on their tod in the flipping boonies with no transportation........the wind is totally taken out of my sails, I'm typing through tears, where does a Mother/Grandmother start to worry about this unexpected turn of events? M

Thank you all very much for the kind words. My grandmother was a wonderful woman, and lived a long and full life. She was very active and full of energy until the last 9 months or so. I choose to celebrate her life and all that she did, rather than be clouded by sadness.

My shopping is officially done. Now I have to wrap all this stuff. As usual, I think I went a bit overboard(especially for Nan) but I really do enjoy giving gifts more than receiving them.

While I was timely with my cottage cards, I have yet to send out my family ones. I'll have to get those sent out this weekend.

I'm glad everyone seems to be getting a kick out of my card. I started out with grander ideas(don't we all?) and after a few attempts at such, decided to go with something a little easier. I did manage to incorporate glitter(stole it from Benjamin's craft bag),though, so I was pretty happy with the result.

The weather has us all feeling like its mid January around here. It's not even Winter yet! Ugh. I swear "winter" gets longer and longer every year. Like TM, I won't even bother looking at the catalogs yet. It all just seems so far away.
