well ... i am loathe to answer this issue in regard to your wife ----- Will my life be happy or miserable :-)

but you ought to be able to find some variation of Chamaecyparis locally to sniff it out yourself ...

why one would presume that a cham might smell like a juniper is a mystery to me.. but i am a gin lover ... and i like the juniper smell..

perhaps if you got her hooked on gin.. you would be further along with the junipers survival ...

i dont know if they will take your zone ...

over the years.. the first indication that a plant is NOT zone appropriate.. is whether GOOD nurseries refuse to carry the stock ... and i am not talking about bigboxstores ...

call the highest end nursery within 100 miles and see what the manager has to say.. should we fail you here

I personally don't have a problem with the Juniper smell, she just has scent issues :-)

Haven't had much luck finding a high end nursery where people know their stuff. I am sure they are around (as there are tons of growers around here). Most nurserymen around here know their little corner of the plant world, and that is about it. They don't venture outside the tried and true.

Any suggestions on who to purchase from online?

On the original query:

1. I'd be rather dubious whether it can cope with the summer heat/humidity combination in Georgia. That combination is a good one for encouraging Seiridium canker.

2. I'd describe the scent as sour-resinous. Not the nicest of conifer scents to my mind, there's others that are much nicer. Having said that, if she likes Cupressus glabra (arizonica), she might like this too, as it is somewhat similar (Nootka Cypress is actually now classified as Cupressus nootkatensis, not in Chamaecyparis any more). Very unpredictable as enjoyment of scent is so variable from person to person.

3. Can't help there! But probably not difficult to get mail order, unless shipment between different states is prohibited for plant disease prevention reasons.

Pike nursery in the Atlanta metro area carries them...but you may have to call several stores to find it. Not all locations carry the exact same plants.

Grows natively along rivers in some locations in the continental climate east of the Cascade Mountains in Oregon and Washington. Can also be seen forming impressive planted specimens at farmhouses in the vast semi-aridity of eastern Washington. So, although it reaches its best development in the snowy and rainy climate of the western Olympic Mountains it is not limited to that kind of environment.

Seems go grow well in the Nashville, TN area if that helps any. We are more like zone 6b/7a. Plenty hot and humid though. I would not call them huge but I have seen a few specimens 25-30ft tall.

I live in zone 7b central Arkansas. My Chamaecyparis nootkatensis 'Green Arrow' was planted a little over a year ago. During the summer months, it's hot and humid here. It receives full sun from about 10am til 6pm. It was purchased locally from a nursery and had been there over a year prior to purchasing. Presently it's new growth is bluish-green and looks healthy to me.

(Tangent warning: nothing in this paragraph has any relevance). Been toying with some different ideas. I have a weeping bald cypress in the front of my house between the walkway and house, the location wasn't well planned out when planted. Been necessary for me to stake it up and trim it back each spring. It's 5 years old and probably 15-18 feet tall and looking really cool. Been thinking about getting another one of them for 'the spot' in the backyard and start training it from a young age. Those trees have really cool growth characteristics. Only drawback it that I really do not want to duplicate trees. Also been driving around looking to see what is around in the area. Saw some beautiful young conifers (many different types) at someone's house in an upscale development not far from me, I may go knock on their door and speak with them (as much as I hate knocking on someone's door). Been searching nurseries for info, but still have been unsuccessful with that route (but I did find a great nursery specializing in native hummingbird and butterfly plants). The people on this forum are really my greatest source for info.

most STATE colleges.. being agricultural in nature.. have arboretums... collections of plants that are labeled ...

i suggest you visit one.. and see what grows locally ...

also .. you need to start looking at dwarf in mini plants ...

your inclination.. in trying to keep LARGE trees small is going to fail sooner or later..

i planted 3 foot bald cypress whips 8 years ago .. and they are going on 30 feet ... i would caution you.. to try to keep said monster under 10 feet ... it can be done.. basically bonsai in the ground... but yikes ...

my point.. if i have one... take the time to find a cultivar with a smaller annual growth rate ... so you dont have to be so pro active in annual maintenance ...

e.g .. try the link below ... of course.. finding one will be the next trick.. lol

perhaps.. if you could post some pix.. we could help you with options re: cultivars ...
