I've got one coming from Darren at Whistling Gardens. He doesn't have much of a description. I used the Buchholz site for info along with a few others I think. Prob. whatever came up on a Google search. Can't wait to get it though, it looks promising!
The 'Green Arrow' isn't a sisterplant of the 'Sparkling Arrow', it's the motherplant. 'Sparkling Arrow' was found as a white variegated branchmutation by Talon Buchholz'. I saw the partly variegated motherplant when I visited his nursery in 2004 together with other members of the Dutch Conifer Society. The habit of 'Sparkling Arrow' is the same as 'Green Arrow' only it's growing rathe is slower because of it's variegation.
Other white variegated weeping forms of this species are 'Pendula Variegata' and 'Gloria Polonica'. The last one is very simular to 'Sparkling Arrow' but comes from Poland and it's variegation is a bit more creamy white.
Chamaecyparis nootkatensis is now known as Xanthocyparis nootkatensis and by some as Cupressus nootkatensis.
Thanks for the info...I'll add that to the database...Also might help me decide where to plant it as I have the 'Green Arrow' in the nursery from last fall.
I'm getting a C. n.'Sparkling Arrow' from Darren this spring, too.
I checked the Buchholz Nursery website and it lists this plant as a zone 3 plant. Can that be correct? I'm pretty sure that 'Green Arrow' is not rated as being that cold hardy.
I'm going to give this plant a try in zone 4a and see how it does. Since it is such a narrow plant, I am hoping I can plant it behind another conifer to protect it from the winter sun. Any thoughts appreciated. Mike
Hi Dave, I'm trying to protect it from the late winter/early spring sun.
I figure with this plant being so narrow, I can put it next to something else to keep it out of the late February through early April sun, which is the sun that does so much damage around here. At this time of year, the rays of the sun are getting quite strong, yet the ground is still frozen so no water is available to the plants, and they winter burn. This is my last try, if this plant doesn't make it, no more C. nootkatensis for me. (:o)
I have a C. p. 'Filifera Variegata' that doesn't do too bad even though it has variegated foliage. Some does burn, but by mid spring, you can't tell anything happened. Mike
