Comments (22)Didn't really wont to bring this post back up to the top but i thought I would pass along how things have been going and since the pictures of my pond where already here I brought it back to the top . Well one word would explain a lot, that word would be COLD here in middle TN, at least colder then what we are costume to, but nothing to whatsome of you have been having to deal with. My pond being mostly above ground and in the middle of my yard has faired rather well considing everything eles frozen solid around here. I had no choice but to pertect the pond from the cold in what ever way I could find. See pictures above of my above ground pond. The coldest day was during the night this past Saturday with a morning temp Sunday morning of 4 degress, with windchill of -10 Burrrrrrrrrr.. The cold weather moved in the first of last week, snowed some, but the temps and the windchill was what had me veryyyyyyy worried. I purchased a duct brown canvus type tarp that would fit over the entire pond all the way down to the ground and used stretch cords to secure the tarp down around the rail road ties and had the pond pump about a foot below the water surface for water movement. I had already taken down the stock tank bio filter due to the fish death's I had early in December. Well when Saturday came and the weather forcast was giving out near 0, I went out and put another heavy duty tarp over the pond and stretch cords around it again. I tested the water before I put on the first tarp and everything looked good, but I was worried since the pond has been covered now for about 6 days yesterday, I could here the water moving due to the pump so I knew it wasn't frozen. I went out and undone one corner and tested the water and all the readings looked purfect and I turned off the pump for a few minutes and had to use a flashlight to see if the fishies where alive and doing ok..They where just fine and seem to have survived this cold spell without any problems. The tarps saved my little pond form a total disaster I sure. To my surprise there wasn't any ice that had formed in the pond during the last 6 days. I had night mares dreaming of my pond freezing solid and expanding and busting at the seems pushing out the rail road ties and being nothing but a big block of ice. I counted 13 kio, and goldfish and no one was floating. So maybe I can relax at least until the next round of old winter blowes in. Sandy...See Morespell chequer?
Comments (22)Still crying so much I can hardly type, WW! Second good laugh Ive gotten here tonite, and so far, yours is the definite winner! My first computer was a HP! Thats the one what went to binary-land when it died! I wont say it went to heaven, because it didnt deserve to go to heaven! Just before it died I tried to get hold of HP help on the phone. I spent a half an hour looking online for some way to contact them. I went from screen to screen to screen to........... I finally found a real phone number that said I could call for help with problems. It was NOT a toll free number! I kept looking, but never did find a toll free number, so, in desperation, I decided to use the pay number! At least I figured Id get help! I called! I listened to a long menu, trying to figure out which option to pick! I picked an option and got another long list of options! I picked another one and got another long list of options! TWENTY MINUTES LATER I got to a recording that said it had a phone number I could call for help! I carefully wrote the number downand then I looked at the original number I had written down and called! IT WAS THE SAME NUMBER! I think HP is in cahoots with the phone company, and just keeps people on their non-free number as long as they can so they can get good kickbacks from the phone company! At that point I decided I would NEVER buy another HP productand I havent! At least I didn't have to TRY to talk to somebody in India! I try my darndest to find companies that have English speaking help when you need ittho in this day and age, any help at all is somewhat of a miracle! I read recently that Dell has now outsourced their phone help to India! I sure hope theyre not making you pay to send your problema back to them! I still have, and love, my land line too, WW. When a friend (accidentally) calls me on my cell, I ask them to call back on the land line! Cell phone conversation is just too choppy and unnatural sounding as far as Im concernedespecially if both people are on a celland most of the people I know only use cells! And I do have a wireless phone around here somewhere, but I never got around to hooking it up and "programming" it! Its still in the box! I need to have the cell when Im working, and, I have to admit, Im glad to have it in the car with me when Im out somewhere! It really has become a nice "safety" thing to carry around with me. But a funny story! Almost eight years ago now, when I was still commuting to SFO, I got back to DEN, dead tired and freezing because it was winter here and it wasnt winter in SFO, and I didnt have a coat with me, and when I finally got to my car at the park-and-ride lot, my battery was dead! I tried and tried, and finally gave up and decided Id have to call AAA and wait for themthis was close to midnite! I got out of the car with my purse and headed toward the bus shelter, where I assumed there would be a pay phone when I suddenly realized I had a phone in the purse I was carrying with me! I turned around, got back in my car, locked the door, and called AAA! But you can tell how used to using it I was! I wont ever make that mistake again, but I really dont use the phone much more now than I did back then! I only pay about $20 a month with the corporate discount I get, but I have texting DISABLED! Right after I got a new phone a couple years ago I got a spam text message, and I discovered I had been charged for it! Paying for people to send me junk? I dont think so! Good luck with getting your problema fixed, Skybird...See MoreDoes ANY Washer last 10+ years now??
Comments (122)Good for you, except for scarcity of the replacement pump. Did you check eBay for new or used pumps? The Fisher & Paykel toploader that I bought in 1999 carried on for 22 years until it went dead a few months ago, apparently due to a water leak of some ilk that zapped the controller board. My nephew had been using it for several years after it had passed through two other family members after myself, with one repair in 2011 (pump replacement). They live 2-1/4 hrs away and have a new baby so it wasn't a viable scenario for me to investigate it. They bought a used LG, a couple years old from someone who was moving and couldn't take it along. Anyway, appliance longevity statistics are a moving target. A machine that went for 10 years until a failure today was bought 10 years ago so is not as much relevant to expectations for one bought new next week....See MoreCan someone spell out the $ and other benefits of camping???
Comments (8)Tents aren't expensive. If you'd plan to have a larger group only occasionally, better get one whose size fits the ones usually going - or probably a little larger than you think you'd need, which I think you'd appreciate later. Then get a second tent to accomodate the occasional travellers: if two other families were to alternate, they could share the cost and own it between them, unless the second family would need it at the same time as the first accompanying family. Campgrounds, which aren't expensive, have sites without power supplied, which would mean that you'd need a gas-powered lantern, but you can get sites with power for a slightly higher cost. Then you'd need power cords and lights. A propane-powered campstove isn't too expensive, either. You'd almost certainly want sleeping bags - do you have any now? Most folks also want air mattress(es) (but they tend to spring leaks) or a slim foam pad on which to lay the sleeping bag(s). However - if you want to get a motor home, they're pretty expensive. My kids have one for sale, following the death of their mother - asking about (Cdn)$50 - 60,000., I think. Any takers? Might be more attractive if, after upcoming retirement, you plan to do a lot of travelling. But if you could find return on alternate investment of 4%, on $50,000. that's $2,000./yr., which means a cost of $1,000./wk. if you use it only for an annual vacation of 2 weeks. Before you consider extra costs for renting space at motor home parks or gas for the larger vehicle, in many cases not just during the vacation, but for at least occasional use all year long. Plus insurance surcharge, maintenance, depreciation and other costs. Many folks consider camping rather primitive - but our forefathers experienced a lot worse, so you can be sure that, in most cases, it wouldn't kill you, as most of them survived. Camping people share a lot of good-will, also - you'd find that you make a lot of friends. But then, my ex- did while travelling in her motor home for three months in winters plus occasionally in summer, previously to and during almost all of 10 years of retirement. If you're used to and desire most of the comforts of home, better rent either one of these alternative systems for a trial run before you decide to buy - remembering that with rental stuff, usually when you've rented things three or four times, you've paid most of the cost of purchase. Good wishes for making a choice that you won't regret - well, not more than marginally, anyhow. ole joyful...See Moreconiferjoy
