Sad day...

Today was the day I tossed the tubers that I have given up on and it was more than normal. Last summer's weather caused a lot of pencil tubers, and they were just too thin to make it.

There are a few more that might not make it...I see buds, but they are far behind and might not have enough oomph to survive.
Toss in the ones I lost last year, for the same reason, and I'm missing some of my favorites!

I never even got to see some of them bloom! Oh, well. So far this year is shaping up better. It's already been warmer than it ever got in May last year, so I'm hoping that our soil will be ready to plant the last few days of May, and that September doesn't leave the ground so muddy we can't really dig.
Just had to whine to someone who would understand...DH looks at the pile I tossed, and then at what I have potted and although the tossed pile is large, he thinks I have plenty in pots already!

Mytime - so sorry to hear you are tossing so many.

Are you sure they won't eye up later? I have had stragglers that finally eye up two months after most of the others are going strong. Right now I have a tray of "hopefuls" covered lightly in potting mix sitting on top of my fluorescent lights for warmth. I'm not ready to give up on them yet.

I have a few from your list, If mine weren't mostly sprouted and 3-6" tall in pots, I'd offer to send you replacements.

Thanks mandolls, I appreciate the thought of the offer.
It's not just lack of eyes, but tubers that dried out, too. With how they looked a month ago, I actually feel fortunate that I had as many survive as I do. And I have 2 trays of hopefuls, but they're mostly duplicates of ones that have definitely begun sprouting already.

Mizann, I do not have the answer but to me a compromise would be to not allow any guns that are not single fire. Hunting does not require full or semi automatic fire. For those who carry or have guns for self/ home protection they should maybe not go so far as to have full or semi multiple fire guns and be limited to single shot before re-load. Not owning a gun myself I do not know how the laws work in each state but perhaps a longer than already in place waiting time to own a gun. In some states that have a three day wait, well maybe a hothead will not have cooled off enough by then. Of course the bad guys will still be able to come by the full and semi automatic fire on the black market. It would take time to eventually confiscate these gun types and then you would only get a percentage. I think over time it would help though with the availability of full and semi automatic fire guns falling into the hands of those who commit these horrendous shootings like the latest. Annie, I would respectfully like to hear your take. I really would, so please do not go. It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on a compromise. Or if you think there should not be one. Nancybee, I am also an agnostic! See we do have something in common even though we did not vote the same way. It is a MYTH that everyone on a particular "side" is Christian. My family is Christian though and voted your party. See, this is what I'm talking about when asking people not to lump people together by party. @Mischievous Magpie (CO 5b) Thank you! Yes it is always so sad when little ones get sick because they can’t even tell you what hurts. My 15 month old just finished antibiotics for an ear infection 3 weeks ago, then got a cold from a family member. Finished that cold a week ago and is now again with bilateral ear infections plus cutting his upper lateral incisors. I hope both of yours get a break also and feel better, I can’t even imagine how much more difficult it would be with two sick children. I do not usually engage in too much criticism or debate online. I do not like judging people since I do not know their motives or challenges, but some times people forget that what is a lovely hobby to us is a business to those people. They may even like roses, but their job is to sell roses to pay for their home, cars, medical insurance and food. They are just trying to make a living like everyone else.

Well, I just read an article from a Chicago newspaper. Seems that although they are not closing the Chicago plant they are eliminating 600 of the 1200 jobs from the Chicago plant and moving them to Mexico where they said it is cheaper to make the cookies. BOOOOOO! Will still be boycotting Oreos. I long for the days when things said "Made in the USA". FYI, I also boycott Hobby Lobby. EVERYTHING in that place is made in China. I do have a few principles:/. Darn!

phoggie - so sad to read this! it will be long and never ending trauma for that family. Out here people drive like crazy. i don't even like to drive anymore. big trucks and SUVs just race around other cars. I've had a few close calls lately. one was a PU truck that forced his way thru a light that turned red as i turned - he was behind me and he fish tailed all over the lane to the right of me. i thought for sure he'd hit the back end of my car - I sped up to get away from him. And I've been wanting to get a newer car - but am so reluctant to give up my old buick wagon - with it's big front end! so many newer cars hardly have any front end on them. that scares me with the monster vehicles out here in AZ. prayers for your gd and family and the family of the friend. It'll be a tuff road ahead for them. God be with them.

Mytime, I have some of the ones you're tossing and a few others that are not on your list but maybe could be used as fillers for this year. I just donated most of my extra roots to our club's sale yesterday, but remember seeing an extra or two of Thomas Edison, Colorado Classic, Bahama Mama, Myrtle's Folly, Tropic Sun, Spartacus, Hulin's Carnival (similar to Ryn Fou), and perhaps a Wyn's Sensation and Islander.

If you are interested, I can check what's left and give you a complete, more accurate list tomorrow. I am not at home tonight.

this really helps with sub par tubers-might have to tweak it for alaska-i make a hot compost heap in a half wine barrel-this year i used chicken scratch and alfalfa-cover it with old potting soil-surface plant on sides lightly cover with compost and let it rip-brings back the most miserable withered winter storage damaged raggedy ass tubers
