Hi All,

I know you've doubtless been wondering what's become of our dear Steven. I'm passing along a message from him that he's had problems with his computer and was also busy with campaign activites.

He says:

"I've missed you all so much. With my computer finally back and the elections over, things can start getting back to normal. I could really use some green inspiration. My garden is an absolute mess. I've got tons of blooms but even more weeds. I'm calling it my 50/50 Victory garden. Feel free to tell folks on the forum that you heard from me. I've got a lot of catching up to do and will spend some time looking through the posts to see what been happening. Look for a post from me soon."

WE WILL, STEVEN!!!

Oh Crap - Prop 8- that just sucks, big time!!! These people are paying to you, not attention to the overall picture. This is not cool.

natal, thanks for that link to disable the links! :-) I considered trying BT for the winter moths we've had for the past four years, but I just couldn't bring myself to use it. I've never used anything in 30 years on this property and I don't want to start now. The trees and some of the shrubs don't look as great as I would like in the early spring, but they recover and grow new foliage and right now, everything is looking good again. Plus, I've noticed that all those winter moth caterpillars have attracted a lot of grackles to my garden. There are about a dozen or so that have built nests nearby and I've seen them feeding their young, so I think they have settled in. In early spring when the winter moth caterpillars are in the trees, I can see the grackles and even sparrows and other birds, up in the branches picking them off and eating them all over the yard. So I am content to let them work it out for the time being. Now that I know the BT will bother butterflies, then I will all the more want to avoid it. Thanks for pointing that out.

"Any ideas what the court would legally do?" It depends on the state, I believe. A friend of mine recently went through a divorce. He has two children with his now ex. After the second one was born he learned his wife had been cheating on him on and off for a long time (he found out she was cheating when he got a VD). It is possible the youngest child is not his. In fact, the youngest doesn't look like him, but does resemble the other guy (so I've been told by someone else). But it's not a clear cut thing since the other guy and the BM are the same ethnicity, so it's possible the child actually resembles the mother. Anyway...he was told by 2 lawyers to "speak now or forever hold your peace". If he wanted to contest paternity he had to do it before the award of child support (being done as part of the divorce). He consulted a doctor about the test but never followed through. He decided the child is "his" either way, and he just didn't want to know. He pays almost $3k in child support per month, so there was a lot at stake. I think the little girl's situation is complicated. What if the situation was that she was conceived using a sperm donor, so her "dad" was not her biological father? I think most people believe children conceived using alternative methods (sperm donation, egg donation, even adoption) have a right to know. Doesn't this girl have a right to know who her bio father is? What if she found out some other way, wouldn't that be devastating? For example, my mother was blood type O and dad is type A. Let's say I took high school science and then went to donate blood and learned I had blood type B...I'd know know one of my parents (most likely the father, let's face it) was not in fact my bio parent. I was actually at a party where people were talking about blood types and someone figured out something hinky was going on in their family. Everyone shut up real quick.

For $8.70 she packed it in. her garden is full. I got to smell thru Margos garden last night. She include 2 cloves of garlic , spicy orange thyme, lemon thyme, bi color hosta, bee balm, grape hyacinths, candy tuft, and Rembrance crocus from olivias garden. And plant labels and markers. Then added mason vase inserts, tranfers for my crafts, and a handmade soap. This was a wonderful thoughtful package. Thank you M argo.

I just emailed John again, and encouraged him to read the comments here. He did mention that he doesn’t often go to Houzz to read because it just reminds him of what once was. I do understand that, and respect his decision if he is t willing to try again. That being said, I do wish he would give it one more try. John, if you’re reading this, maybe you could just try adding a comment here. Most people don’t have a problem adding a comment to an existing thread. Many people are able to start new threads with text, but are only able to post photos in a comment following their initial post. I am in that category unless I use my Amazon Fire tablet. For some reason I CAN post pictures with my opening post on that. Since I prefer to use my iPhone, I just add my pictures in a comment immediately afterwards. I too look forward to Steven's posts! Funny while evocative. I bet even his 50/50 garden looks a lot better than any of mine!

Steven, good to hear from you. I've been missing your posts and your detailed political insight. Prop 8 - noone can really stop time, you know, no matter how hard they try, so things will get there eventually.

Thanks Patti for the shout out!

As Patti mentioned, I became very involved in the election this year. In order to be effective, I had to devote as much time and energy as I could find in me. It was just something I had to do and in retrospect, I loved every minute of it. It was an empowering experience.

Yeah, Prop 8 was a pretty big disappointment. But we live to fight another day. There are two things I won't be robbed of. My dignity and my determination. Both came out of this unscathed.

Patti mentioned my computer woes. The Saturday after the election my computer started acting up. To make a very long story short, not even Brian, the Computer Wizard, could save me. This was an uber-bug and I was lucky he was able to rescue my photos and some documents. Three years of purchased software, subscriptions, games, etc. all gone. It will take me weeks to get everything I had re-loaded and functioning. Lesson learned: don't get lazy about backing up your computer.

Garden? Well, we are still eating tomatoes. Hollyhocks are still blooming like crazy. Believe it or not, I've still got delphinium hitting high notes! But the Japanese maple by the patio has turned deep orange and is telling everything to shut up and get to bed. The clover invasion has silently begun and it's all getting completely out of hand.

Maybe a day spent in the garden on Sunday would be just what I need. Cheers friends!
